GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

Was this statement from the governor's office

confirmed? I did not see this. If someone can tell me where to look. I would be grateful. I do not want to get my excitment level up and be disappointed again:heartbeat

Take a look a couple of pages back. There is a link to the Gov. press release.

Well, I have waited patiently hoping that this situation would work out for the Georgia graduates and students, but the GBON seems to be dead set against doing what is "right". I will be leaving the state of Georgia and my husband and children to practice as an RN somewhere. I am not sure if this will ever be resolved but the "GBON" will not stop me from obtaining my dreams and goals. Hopefully, my family will be able to join me where ever I go but, the housing market and current economy will make it difficult to sell my home in Georgia. I don't have a sound plan, but I am working on it. It is a same that a board of women like the GBON have the power to ruin so many peoples lives when they are suppose to be working for the people and nurses in Georgia.!!!!!!!:cry::cry:

In case anyone had trouble finding the link to Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue's press release:

By the way, I'm pretty sure the GA legislature's regular session begins in early January. I know that's not so far off, but I'd like to see the Governor light some fires now on this. This has affected Georgia's healthcare needs, its healthcare providers, its families, its economy and needs to be addressed right now. As far as I'm concerned, this is a legislative emergency.

Count me in on this fight as well!!! I have already sent Gov Perdue a letter of thanks for his support and I plan on contacting as many folks as I can as well as a lawyer. I may have to go elsewhere on a temporary bases, but I am not giving up my home, family, and friends because of a bunch of old, close minded, and heartless witches!!!This is far from over:)

I have also sent a note of thanks for support us. This BON is tough cookies and now they should be afraid of their positions on the board and hope he will release them of their duty. As we all know, the board has not helped the nursing shortage in GA nor have they given us any support for our profession. I am soooo disappointed in them for letting this get so out of hand!! Go Gov Perdue!!!!!

:yeah:

This was done in such an underhanded, almost vindictive way...I really hope when it all shakes out that the primary perpetrators find themselves unemployed. Someone had an agenda. This was presented as a seemingly benign revision to an existing law and then as soon as it was passed the BON immediately interpreted it to mean that they would no longer have to endorse Excelsior graduates.

They need to drop their bleeping innocent "We're just following the law" act. Someone in their office was either the author of the proposal or in cahoots with (or being bribed by) whoever has such an ax to grind about EC.

However this works in govt, the amendment should be repealed (immediately!) and if they want to get rid of EC they need to start over and do it out in the open with appropriate cause backed by documentation that EC grads perform at a lesser competency than state college grads (good luck with that), public notification, and a reasonable transition plan.

I believe that Rep. Sharon Cooper (a Masters prepared nurse, by the way, as many of you know) was the architect of this legislative train wreck. From what I've read, she was the one who introduced HB 1041, which eventually evolved into this mess.

As some of you have seen, she was the one interviewed on Fox 5 Atlanta who said that Excelsior College has been a "loophole that needed to be closed for a long time", and proceeded to inform the public that a "person could go from being a high school graduate to being an RN without ever setting foot in a hospital". When that statement was challenged, she then followed up with a statement that indicated that the facts would not change her opinion. Her statements are proof that excluding EC grads was no accident as the BON keeps saying to the press.

She ran unopposed for the GA 41st district Representative, so we GA citizens are still stuck with her. This means that every GA nurse needs to be watching every move she makes during her next term. If we take the element of surprise away from her, then maybe her damage to our state can be minimized.

Somebody on the BON was in collusion w/ Rep. Cooper and I would have to guess somebody with the University System as well because they are the only ones who would "benefit" from getting rid of EC in GA. It's all ridiculous because every nursing program I know of has waiting lists.

Cooper's obviously a control freak. She was one of the representatives behind the law that makes me have to stand in a special line for 20 minutes, give a blood sample and three forms of identification to buy one box of Claritin-D. Obviously, that law has made a huge dent in the meth problem (not) so who am I to question her legislative acumen?

I hope all of you guys hang in there and I have faith that this issue will be resolved in the state of Georgia. I'm a successfull 2006 EC graduate and I will be writting Gov. Purdue to thank him for his support of the college. I know that all EC alumni feel the same way--even though I am not in the terrible position that you guys are, this is an attack on ALL Excelsior graduates, because this affects our reputation.

Hang in there!:bow::redpinkhe

excelsiors nursing program receives nln honor pobtrans.gifexcelsior college designated center of excellence in nursing education

albany, ny - the excelsior college school of nursing was designated a 2005-2008 national league for nursing (nln) center of excellence in nursing education in the category of creating environments that enhance student learning and professional development during the nln education summit 2005, held in baltimore, md from sept. 29 - oct. 1. this prestigious recognition was first awarded by the nln in 2004 with only three schools receiving the award. this year, four more schools, including excelsior college, received the designation. in order to apply for the designation, a school must be nlnac accredited. there are approximately 1,700 nlnac accredited nursing programs in the u.s.

dr. bridget nettleton, dean of excelsior's school of nursing, accepted the award on behalf of the college at the summit. the designation as a center of excellence is awarded based on excellence in all of excelsior college's nursing programs: associate, baccalaureate and master's degrees.

as stated on the national league for nursing web site, "recognition by the national league for nursing as a center of excellence is designed to distinguish those schools that demonstrate sustained, evidence-based and substantive innovation in the selected area, that conduct ongoing research to document the effectiveness of such innovation, that set high standards for themselves, and that are committed to continuous quality improvement. such recognition indicates a commitment by the school as a whole to pursue and sustain excellence in student learning and professional development, ongoing faculty development, or nursing education research."

"this is an incredible affirmation of the outstanding quality of every aspect of excelsior college and our school of nursing," said dr. nettleton. "it acknowledges our premier external degree nursing programs and our extraordinary students, alumni, faculty, staff, advisors and administrators. we are extremely pleased to have received this honor of distinction."

excelsior college has awarded more than 33,000 nursing degrees and has approximately 18,000 students enrolled currently in its nursing degree programs.

The Georgia General Assembly Annual sessions begin on the 2nd Monday in January and run for 40 Legislative days. Sessions normally end in mid to late March, depending upon the number of recess days. The law then has to be interpreted and timeis needed to act on it. Last year, this change was on the books in the general assembly and it affected us all on July 1st. I would expect that same time frame to reverse the problem. I am no law maker, but this is a good guess in my opinion.
