Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
Here is the link to Bill 1041 that supposedly "forced" the BON to take the action against Excelsior grads. Read it, showing all the changes marked from the way it read previously, and see if anything stands out to you that screams 'aw shucks, we can't take EC grads any more.'

This has to be someone's personal vendetta. And, PUH-LEASE - it takes 15 years working clinically as an LPN under the supervision of seasoned RNs to compensate for missing 250 clinical hours in RN school, the RNs who come out and have to get the LPNs who have only worked a year or less, to teach them what to do, what to look for, etc., (and I'm not knocking those poor RNs, just God bless 'em). That's an insult to LPNs. Group vomit please. These people think they are all powerful, all slick, and we're all stupid, literally.

I see what you're saying. They're talking in circles. They say this bill is what caused them to change their policy regarding EC (I'm guessing it's the 'students must graduate from a GBON approved school of nursing), yet they must have had to decide that they were no longer going to approve EC for this to apply. You are totally right. This document is general, and shows nothing about program details. This is crazy.
I was considering enrolling in Excelsior next year, as I am completing my prereqs now. This is the post I found on Georgia Board of Nursing Website.
see Important Announcement Concerning Statutory Changes to RN Licensure by Endorsement in Georgia.
So I guess I better go another route!!

I think that the main idea of this bill was to prevent criminals from practicing nursing in Georgia. I think the addition of this education portion was just an after thought; the BON took this as an opportunity to "seize the day".
I emailed S. Bond personally with the GBON to ask some specific questions regarding what we need to do to get a license in Georgia, and as expected I got the generic response that they have posted on the web site. I have reviewed the "law" and I still can not get answers to the most basic questions. You can bet I will be in Macon next month, the least these people can do is answer our questions and not make us wait until Sept, but that would be the "human" thing to do. I will also send a letter to all of the news stations here in Atlanta. i think the news would want to ask the GBON about the people who used phony transcripts from other countries to obtain a Georgia Licenses???
The only change I see from the way the law read formerly and how it reads now on this item about acceptable nursing programs is they changed the wording from "this board" to "the board". And that is how they can go on the news and say the 'law has been changed and we must uphold the law.' Again, somebody's personal vendetta. Elitist propaganda I say.
OK- in going over the revised laws, they have added some language regarding clinical ed, that would eliminate the CPNE as it stands, as meeting GA's standards. See here: http://rules.sos.state.ga.us/docs/410/3/10.pdf
"(10) The parent institution shall maintain a written agreement with each practice setting
in which actual, interactive learning activities occur that delineates the responsibilities of
involved parties."
Note the 'actual, interactive learning activities' part. Guys- I'm wondering if EC failed to comply with that requirement, and refused to enter any such agreements. Y'all may need to put the heat on them a little more, too. In light of this, they owe you some answers. I am not knocking EC's curriculum- I was very happy with my experiences in their program...but...if they knew this was going on, and failed to inform those of you that this affects the most in a timely manner- at the very least, they need to either a.) assist you in finding a program that will take your EC credits, (and that GA will accept) or they owe you a refund.
This is not to say that I agree with the GABON on this, but they do have the right to ammend their standards as they see fit, and it looks like they minded their p's & q's on this. I would continue to address this through the channels that you are, but I would also demand some answers from EC. You all should have at least have the option of: grandfathering in, finding alternative sources for additional clinical ed, or clarifying with the BON any other distance ed program that they do find acceptable.
Having said that, I do know where most of you are coming from regarding having clinical experience as LPNs. I had extensive LPN experience under my belt when I did the EC program as well. I'm definitely not saying to give up the fight, but I am saying that if EC chose to keep you in the dark about all this, when they knew there was a good chance that this would happen (and believe me- they knew), then they owe you some answers big time.
Now they are asking for your support in this fight. I would demand full disclosure of what measures they have taken to comply with the board on this, and what measures they are taking to ensure that you all are not left broke, and without a license. I'm not taking the BON's side, I'm just saying that EC is more beholden to you as their students than the Board is at this point.
I also wanted to add that I agree wholeheartedly with something Zimsaint said earlier in the thread. EC is beholden to you as students, and has a contract with you to uphold. She is exactly correct. You are all fulfilling your part of that contract as students, and will not be able to enjoy the results of having fulfilled your part of the agreement. They need to make you whole again.
I would like to think EC woudn't do that to us, but having spent our money on being educated there, we do have a right to know: "What did you know, and when did you know it?" I'd like to find that out before the September meeting with the Board so the meeting doesn't turn into a free-for-all. We need to come away with some solutions on the table if possible.

Hi All,
I am proud to say we have been working very hard to have our voices heard. Today part of our stories made it on the channel 2 news. Please lets continue the fight. I feel for those of us who are already enrolled students of excelsior, we, at the very least, should be given a reasonable time frame to complete our studies( as students from other states have). Also, like the GA BON keeps stressing to us" We, are not unsympathetic to the plight of the students" I am not unsympathetic to their plight either. I have no problem getting the clinical's hours they are requesting, if that is going to allow me to receive licensure in the state in which I live.
