GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

I am going to start a Yahoo group so we can all message info to each other regarding this disaster with EC and the GBON. I think the best and first person to complain to regarding this change with the GBON is the GA Secretary of State. I cannot list her name or address here, but can in a yahoo message board. I will let you all know of the yahoo group once I open it...in about 15 minutes! LOL

Please go to this link and join me if you are a graduate of EC, like myself, or a student and want to try to fight this decision by the GBON.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/fairnessinga/

This group will be dedicated entirely to exploring the proper channels to make our voices heard regarding this decision not to endorse future graduates of EC. I konw we can make a difference in this. Let's try!

]Hi Everyone!

]I have been creating a network of EC nursing students for the last couple of weeks when VA also passed legislation to not grant RN licensure to EC graduates via NCLEX-RN or endorsement. I am trying to bring this issue out into the public forum, in an attempt to expose this factually unfounded position being taken by individual states BON, and the NCSBN (National Council of State Boards of Nursing). This position being taken needs to be ammended and the elected legislative officials need to be "enlightened" about the rediculous law they have passed. I have been telling folks that this position originated from the NCSBN, therefore giving individual states the "green light" with an "indepth study" to "justify" their actions. There is a complete "mindset" that needs to be changed. I wanted to have some sort of documentation on record that this is the position of the NCSBN, so I sent this e-mail:

Hello,

I was wondering what the NCSBN's position is regarding the LPN to RN bridge program offered by Excelsior College and do you make any type of "suggestions or recommendations" to individual states BON regarding your position? Thank you in advance for your response.

]This was the response I received:

Hello,

We do not take positions regarding individual nursing programs, though some Boards of Nursing have taken stands on programs with limited or no clinical experiences. However, we have taken a stand on the essentiality of clinical experiences in prelicensure nursing programs, and I am attaching that position paper. The NCSBN Delegate Assembly approved that position paper in our 2005 Delegate Assembly.

Thank you!

]So... they've "taken a stand"... hmmm... and we wonder why all these states feel justified in their new legislations??

]While I understand we all need to work on our individual state levels where we live, please take a minute to email me so I can add your name to my growing contact list. I am planning to fight for EC on both a state and national level. If we don't disprove their "study" in a public forum, this legislation will continue to occur in more states. Also, if you haven't signed my petition, please do AND FORWARD IT TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW! I originally created it for VA, before GA had announced. That being said, it DOES address the NATIONAL CONCERN that legislation such as this will create, so you folks in GA can feel free to print off a copy to take with you to your GA BON next month to emphasize the support for your position.

]Lastly, one of my contacts sent me this interesting link of ONE GOVERNOR WHO ACTUALLY "GOT IT" AND DID NOT SIGN THE LEGISLATION IN HIS STATE. KUDOS TO HIM!

Nikki,

I'm the one that sent you the link a couple days ago and I thank you for posting it here for others to read. I believe this will enlighten others just as it enlightened us. As you know, I whole heartedly agree that this is a nationwide "epidemic" which is why I signed your petition from the beginning even when I thought that it was only a "VA" problem. I encourage everyone on this site to sign the petition you have posted if they haven't already.

I just signed the petition..I encourage others to do so as well.

It makes me mad that they will not acknowledge the difference between people graduating from an RN program who obviously need some clinical hours because they've never had any, and those of us who are already LPNs. What do they think all of our clinical hours were for? We're doing the same thing clinically in school as RNs are doing. The GBON should recognize that and give us credit - like Excelsior has done.

Nikki- if you can email me the attached study Dr. Spector sent you, I will take a look at it, and see if I can find any counter-arguments in it later this week.

Keep up the good work, guys!

I'm not sure if the link I included in my original post of this message for the "study" that Dr. Spector from the NCSBN sent me opened for everyone, so if not, try this link:
