Hey All,
I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.
Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.
I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead:
That's the problem there isn't a program that is as flexible and meets the needs of working adults. I thought long and hard before chosing EC I chose them because of their reputation and at the recommendation of many other EC grads. Like I said I am still enrolled at Darton and after taking 31hrs and taking EC test on top of it have managed at 3.82 GPA at present. Heck at this point a traditional RN program would be a breeze.....I just cannot go to school 3-4 days and manage to work and balance my family life.
I agree with you on skating through clinicals!!!!! I have seen it FIRST HAND....there were many, many students in my traditional RN program that I would not let take care of me, or my dog for that matter.I have passed 100% of my clinicals in that program and am very FEARFUL of what lies ahead for my CPNE, in the traditional program I did not have an instructor sitting over me each time I was in contact with my patients, as a matter of fact once you are checked-off on a skill you can perform it on your own.
I have to say I have met one women who forgot to wash those hands first and had to repeat that experience.....in my old program, my instructor wouldn't have known if I would have even washed my hands at all that day. Please don't get me wrong, I am NOT trying to knock any nursing program, if all would have went as planned I would be a graduate from there... I am just trying to say, just b/c you got that clinical experience, in that traditional program, does not make you a better nurse than someone from EC!
why does every state have separate nursing boards? i think once you pass the nclex that should allow you to have national licensure... not state to state. 8 people should not be in charge of anyones fate even in court you have 12 jurors.... :) just venting.. sorry guys/gals

Well first of all it's actually constitutional for the states to have separate licensure. The federal gov is only supposed to provide what the states can't. It would be nice, but it's never going to happen.

This is unfortunate, but true. As of right now a graduate of EC cannot apply for endorsement in GA. If you go to the GA state board if nursing web site http://sos.georgia.gov/plb/rn/ and then click on Important Announcement Concerning Statutory Changes To RN Licensure by Endorsement then you can read the vague message regarding the changes they made in July. I graduated from EC 3 years ago, but know people who are affected by this decision. I think the best thing to do right now is to make our voices heard. The GBON is going to have an open assembly regarding this new decision and I really feel they will make some sort of amendment to it if enough people attend and voice their concerns. When I find out the time and the place of this next meeting I will post it.
"....The Board is not unsympathetic to the plight of the students who have been adversely affected by this new law....."
Yeah, I'll just BET they are.
Typical canned response from a faceless bureaucrat.
I'm sorry, but the "knee-jerk" politics of Georgia have gone TOO far this time, and I find their decsion denying licensure of their EC graduates presumptuous and and unfair.
I would suggest we find out how the BON members get their jobs; appointment, election from Ga. nurses..how?
Then we start an effort to stop them from remaining in the positions for another term. After the news broke about the recent legislation, I contacted five EC grads that are working in Ga. and told them..they were understandably in disbelief as was I. We discussed what methods would work best to stop this insanity from going further, and the consensus was to first write letters and emails, then go to the board meeting in Macon, then by whatever means available, stop current members from retaining their seats.
I know several EC students that are attending the next board meeting in Macon, Ga. on September 17. This endeavor is to make our voices heard, and to educate the Georgia Board of Nursing about the abilities of EC nurses. I also know a nurse that is a delegate to GBON; as soon as I get the chance to speak with her, I'll have a better understanding of the impetus of the legislation.
As many of us know, most graduate nurses are very much neophytes with clinical skills, but the fact remains their schools have a "clinical" component, so...they are accepted by the board.
As for me, I have 20 years of clinical skills. ACLS, PALS, CPR. I already know how to start IV's and any number of skills that make a good nurse. I can triage, diagnose and treat better than any nurse extern. But, my clinical skills don't count. I wonder how many graduates from any nursing program can pass the CPNE?

ps
I forgot to add: Most of the EC students I know (including myself) are contacting their local state legislators about the decision, and getting them to investigate how this happened, and if they can do anything..maybe submit legislation to reverse the ruling.

I agree ABAC has a very LPN friendly program I have actually considered it myself. As for darton ....not knocking the school I am still enrolled there for BSN prereqs....their program is still very new and has alot of kinks that need to be worked out. They only enroll once a year and still favor medics over LPN's in their admission process.
