Future Specialty?

Hey:

Does anyone want to share their future specialty and why??

Well I am only working on my first semester of pre-req's right now, but I think some type of OB-GYN like Labor and Delivery or Post Partum. I have always been so interested in pregnancy, delivery, and newborn care. So who knows, maybe once I learn about the other specialties then I'll change my mind (I still have 4 years!) but as long as I've wanted to be a Nurse that's what it has been :coollook:

I'm not 100% sure right now. I would like to work in either L & D or post partum, and go back to school in the future to become a midwife (a midwife was present when my DS was born and she helped me so much!). I am also interested in working wtih Psychiatric patients. My brother is mentally ill and I know it takes a person with a lot of understanding to work with the mentally ill. I have become much more understanding since he was diagnosed. I am also interested in Pediatrics. I orgianlly wanted to be a pre-school teacher, but decided it wasn't for me. I would still like to work with children though.

I don't want to get my heart set on one specialty because I might end up not liking it or I might not get the chance to do it. We will see what happens.

I'm fairly sure I want L&D but until I go through clinicals, I can't be for sure. Currently I work at a pediatric hospital and with that being said, I would take peds as a back up. Never get a back injury there will I?

Definitely Hospice care for me.

I volunteer at an AIDS hospice right now and a few weeks after I started my priest asked me how it was going and I said, "If anyone would have told me that I could work in a place that focused on death and dying and that I would leave each shift feeling so uplifted, I wouldn't have believed it."

I can't describe the feeling I get when I sit with a dying patient...the look of gratitude in their eyes when I do something as simple as moisten their lips or the smile they try to give me when they realize that they aren't alone.

I feel so rewarded talking family members through the grieving process.

I think what really cemented my decision was one of my residents died in March and a few months later I saw her daughter at a concert. She ran up to me and said, "Excuse, I don't remember your name, but do you remember me?" And I said, "Of course I do...you're Marie's daughter..." And when she introduced me to her friend she said, "This lady was so nice to me when my mother was dying, I'll never forget it. Thank you so much!"

Yup...hospice care for me (I hope!)

I think it's great you want to do hospice. My son was in hospice his last month (he was 14 mos), and how your resident's daughter felt about you is exactly how I feel about my son's nurse, I'll literally never forget her. Even if it's hard for the families at first, in the long run, they realize how you were there in the toughest of times. The world needs more people like that.:redbeathe

Geriatric--probably LTC. Oh, and I know...some look at me as though I have two heads when I say this. However, I like old people. Not even certain why...maybe I appreciate things with history.

The only children I can stand are my grand-babies...so I know Peds won't work for me. Maybe if they're sick??? Maybe

As for all the other specialties...I guess I need my clinical rotations to know for certain.

Oh, and I do have an interest in forensics...what the heck does a forensic nurse do anyway???

Time for a little research here...

It's cardiothoracic ICU for me! I started out wanting NICU, then PICU, then L&D, then (insert specialty here). I was interested in everything! I chose the CTICU because the hospital where I'll work has adults and pediatrics on that floor so I will be trained to take care of both, plus patients come directly from the OR and I'll get training similar to PACU. It's the most versatile nursing experience I could probably ask for, and I love working with heart/lung transplant patients (my mother is awaiting a lung transplant so I have a personal interest in it as well).

Of course, now I'm doing my senior capstone in pediatric OR and I love it as well. I predict that I will work in several specialties throughout my career before I "figure it out." That's why nursing is such a fabulous career! :nurse:

NOT GERIATRICS!

i work in a nursing home now, and while i like it, i know i'll burn out from even being a CNA during school. it seems like the nurses dole out pills, change wound dressing, and deal with death... and that's about it.

i have no idea. i don't think i want to go into pediatrics, either. i love babies, so possibly NICU or midwifery. i'd also love to work in oncology or epidemiology. eventually i want to go into global health and study epidemiology, but i know it'll take me a while to get there

I thought I'd stick with being a nursing home nurse. But after watching what the two-year nurses do, day in and day out I've changed my mind. However, I still want to do something with the elderly ( I love people and things with a real history). I also have a desire to concentrate on mental health issues. So, my dream has become to get the ADN (I'll have that accomplished in 2009)...then go onto for the BSN and masters degree in nursing so that I can work as a clinical nurse specialist or NP in that field. Of course I'm not getting any younger, so I have to maintain the 3.5 GPA and plow away towards my goals. My goal is to finish it all by the time I'm about 59.

Don't let anyone tell you that you're too old is my motto...

I would like to work at PACU or ICU, maybe even ER...but I suspect that I end up somewhere completely different since I haven't got to try anything yet. I may end up somewhere I haven't even thought of yet ;)

I know I'll find my niche!

Most def. Oncology! I'm heavily involved in the ACS Relay For Life...my first year I couldn't contain myself while wacthing the Luminary Ceremony(to be honest, I still can't). I saw all of the survivors walk their lap and saw all of the luminary bags lined up on the track and I suddenly realized that I want to help all of these people and their families.

I remember during the ceremony a young lady(prob. about 25) holding onto a photo of her mother for dear life, sitting on the track crying in front of the bag with her moms picture on it.

I also remember a little boy around 7, bald, purple survivor shirt and the biggest smile on his face in the 100 degree heat. He was the kindest little boy and he came up to me and asked me to help him open up his bubbles for him so he and his brother could play. I never would have known he had cancer if I didnt see the purple shirt!

I may only be sixteen but I know, that's what I want to do.
