Hello everyone, I did not see a post for the fall 2014 semester, so I wanted to get it started. I applied to the 2014 summer semester and now I am waiting on my acceptance or denial letter. I am starting this forum just in case i do not get in for the summer. My total score right now is 169.96. I have 97 points for my classes and 72.96 points from the NAT. I am currently taking statistics and humanities, in hope of getting an A in both of them to boost my score up to 178.96. I made a C in A&P 1, my first humanities class and PSY1012. I also made a B in college algebra and that is what got my score down so low. I hope that the low cut off score trend continues to give me a good chance of getting in. The last 3 semesters were 175.96, 187 and 187. I am preparing to retake the NAT in late May to be in time for the June 1st deadline with plenty of time to study for the NAT. I look forward to meeting you all, and hear how things are going for you, so we can encourage and support one another.
I called the airline and they said that I could move the date, but there would be a 300$ penalty per ticket. Thats way too much money.1)Is there someone else I could speak with besides Mrs. James?
2) Is orientation only a day or is it multiple days?
3) Is orientation really mandatory?
Orientation used to be two days but I believe it's now only one day and then there is a scavenger hunt you have to do before that on your own time (where you go to different departments, etc. and collect signatures). The reason I believe it is mandatory is because it's during orientation that you do the lottery for classes - so if you're not there then you don't get the information regarding how to register for your section. Ms. James is the only one who can answer your questions - you will just have to be persistent with her.

Scavenger hunt? What is the purpose of getting signatures?

I think their rationale is to orient you to the campus and the various "resources" instead of making you sit through a two day orientation. The reason you need signatures is to prove you did it! I don't know if it's just signatures that are needed - I was in the last class that did the two day orientation so I've only heard about this scavenger hunt through other people. You'll get the info in your acceptance packet.
I am going to be soo ****** if you need chemistry with a lab for the the spring term. I never took it with a lab. I will have to retake it with a lab in the fall and I would have to wait till next summer to apply. OMG thats rediculous. When they change a catalog they need to give students at least one semester before the application is due so that way people don't take classes they dont need and do classes they do..
i feel eel like everything is still up in the air but hopefully they do let you use the one you already have!

Or hopefully I will just get in this fall. Now I wish I took nutrition over the summer so could apply for sjrcc in the spring but too late. Whatever complaining about it wont do anything. I just hope I get in for fall. I will be applying to ju and unf for next summer as well as fscj if I dont get in by the fall since I clearly dont have the requirements yet for the spring
The scavenger hunt thing is something new they started for Summer term, and yes, the purpose is to orient you with the campus and the services that are offered to students in general and to nursing students specifically. I will tell you that the staff is annoyed by it but they will sign it without a second thought, so it really only takes about an hour to do it all.
Orientation is mandatory. We were told that if we didn't make it to orientation, we were out. I don't know if there is any leeway with that, but if you haven't figured it out yet, I will go ahead and tell you that they do not care about outside circumstances. When they moved our semester up without notice, many people lost their vacation time and the money they put into it, and the response to the complaints was, "If you cannot make those changes, you can always choose to forfeit your seat." The point of the hell they put you through the first semester -- and you'll understand what I mean when you go through it -- is to see who really wants it. It sounds harsh and it IS harsh but it's also a competitive program. Their train of thought is that there are other people who would happily move a mountain to get your seat in the program. You have no idea the uproar I saw at Orientation when it was announced, "Hey, FYI, you're all starting school next Monday. So...you've got seven days to get things in order!"
There are days where the disorganization and constant changes are frustrating but contrary to what people say, it's not the complete disheveled mess it's made out to be. It's annoying to say the least but the program IS manageable, I promise. And you will find the nursing students are usually quite willing to help other students out. Each term tries to help the students coming behind them and so on. I will be around when you guys come in the Fall and if you need help or some words of reassurance to tell you that it's not as overwhelmingly horrendous as you are going to think it is (and you WILL think that), find me on campus or through email or FB. I'm always willing to help when I can.
Hang in there. Your letters should be in any day now.
This is a state college, if the application requirements have changed they need to update their website and not wait till the last minute! People need to prepare ahead of time! I printed the 2014-2014 catalog a few minutes ago and CHM 1020 3 credit hours OR higher level chemistry is listed. If it has changed "again" this will be so frustrating, like a game of cat and mouse that cant be won. I have read so many posts of people having numerous issues with the lack of organization and operation of the nursing department. I have plans to apply for fall 2015 program if I can ever catch up with the changes. I am a few weeks into CHM1020 and to late to withdraw. Sorry everyone for my rant...
