Hi Everyone,
I am a new grad ADN June 2014 ( i know I should have gone BSN but I am already enrolled in an RN to BSN program) anyways I cant find a job, i really really want to work in a hospital at this point any hospital on any floor, can anyone give me any tips on how to land a job? I have literally done 100s of online application and nothing. Im just so frustrated and upset :-( please any help or tips are appreciated. Should I just start going to hospitals resume in hand and talking to Nurse Managers? Or is that frowned upon?
D) UCH hires new grads twice a year
I was wrong, they have new grad programs three times a year, not twice a year. Unfortunately, that doesn't help the OP, who is an ADN grad. Good luck - think outside the box!
University Colorado Hospital: Post-Baccalaureate/Graduate Nurse Residency Program
moribelle is incorrect, UHC does hire new grads, and they have a residency program that is highly competitive, but it requires BSN. Also incorrect is that ADNs get hired at most hospitals. ADNs who have been there awhile are grandfathered, but ALL Centure and HCA hospitals either have or are attempting to obtain magnet status, so they will not hire ADN nurses. I did see that DH and Exempla will however only with a contract to obtain a BSN in a certain period of time.
Again, try Drs offices, clinics, LTCs and SNFs or go farther from the city if you really want to be in a hospital.
scared silly is incorrect. All Centura and Exempla hospitals are hiring ADN's. I am an ADN and have personally been offered jobs recently by both. An ad may say "BSN preferred", but if your experience is what they want, you are in. Magnate status does not require all BSN nurses to be employed by these hospitals, Magnate status is obtained in many ways, BSN's are just a small part of it. Don't let it scare you. Apply at will. Good luck. Fingers crossed.
Too much reality of the negative will certainly turn the naive away from trying to move forward. There is so much positive to be giving, and paying forward, to steer someone , our young ones, toward succeeding in their new career, thus taking their place in our medical community hopefully sooner than later. There are too many naysayers and ego's to be fed on this site. Such a disappointing acknowledgement of older nurses who would rather put up roadblocks to our newbies, than try and help them genuinely find their place in this world. Just do your own homework little ones, and leave the naysayers in the dust.
Little ones? How patronizing.
We are trying to correct the misinformation you have given in this thread. Again, it's Magnet, not Magnate. And having Magnet status means that they must have at least 80% of their RN staff be BSN prepared. What that means in reality is that most places will allow their ADN nurses to keep their jobs, but they will be replaced through attrition by BSN nurses. And as far as new hires, unless you come with some really valuable experience, as an ADN you are going to have a hard time getting a job in a hospital. As a new grad, it will be next to impossible to get into a metro hospital without a BSN. For every ADN new grad applicant, there are twice as many BSN applicants. And that's just the hospitals that don't absolutely refuse to hire an ADN new grad, like Children's, Denver Health and UCH.
We do nobody any favors by blowing sunshine and rainbows up people's behinds. The reality is, an ADN new grad is going to have difficulty finding a job, and their best bet is to look outside the hospitals to places like LTC, LTACH, clinics, etc. to get some nursing experience, or to consider relocating to an area of the US that is more ADN-friendly. Denver is not that.
It's not Denver, it is YOU. As I stated, you are a native coloradan, it is obvious. I've seen you on many threads, and your only reason for being on here is to cause conflict where none exists. AND, I'd believe you would do away with all ADN's if it were in your power, thank GOD it is not. That is what your beef is all about and you want to misuse this site to demonstrate that. SHAME ON YOU! You are a disgrace to the profession of nursing. I will waste no further time on your foolishness and egotism. We are working to remove your inappropriate negativity from the entire website, MADAM.

Gear down there, trucker.
A) I am not a native Coloradan. I moved here not quite 5 years ago.
B) I was actually an ADN graduate, and worked for the first 6 years of my career as an ADN RN. Including at UCH and Children's
C) My only reason for being here is to cause conflict? It seems that, with 22 posts under your belt, one could say the same for YOU. I, on the other hand, have been at this website for nearly 12 years, and while I don't run from conflict, I certainly am not here to stir ****. I DO, however, call out misinformation when I see it.
D) No, I would not do away with all ADNs. I WILL, however, give them true information on the realities of the job market for ADNs in many areas of the country
E) I laughed at "you are a disgrace to the profession!!!eleven!" Madam, indeed.
By the way, who is the "we" who are working on trying to get me banned from this website? Genuinely curious.
You are getting way too upset about words on the internet. Perhaps you need a break. Or a hug.

Established AN posters in this forum section have been reporting hiring difficulty past 2-3 years fornew grads in Denver area who have ASN only degree and desire HOSPITAL employer as first nursing position.
Philadelphia PA to Boston market along with Southern California having same issue: dearth of hospital positions for new ASN/ADN graduates due to explosion of BSN programs. Looking outside hospital walls for 1 year employment then try again for hospital position has had more success.

Sadly, the job market for new grads, all nurses for that mater, has changed. There is a plethora of new grads out there and very few positions available in the acute care stetting. Many areas of the country have terrible job markets right now and many are hiring BSN only grads....it's a national trend. California for example has a 47% unemployment rate of nurses with the majority of them being new grads.
This isn't what most new grads want to hear and the schools (as well as the ANA) have told little white lies about the nursing shortage. Right now it doesn't exist. Magnet facilities lean towards BSN new grads as they have a goal of 80% BSN prepared nurses.
ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®OP, think about home care, LTC or possibly a LTAC/LTACH....these are acute care facilities that are accredited as acute care and take all of the complicated/failure to heal patients from the "acute care" facilities. These facilities have intensive care units, patients on heart monitors, and titrated gtts. These patients have multiple co morbidities that have lead them to a complicated post operative course yet are still being treated aggressively. You will work HARD at one of these places but they are willing to train new grads and the experience you will get is staggering.
