Friday vent

Soooo, I heard the ISS teacher telling the secretary over the radio that a student is sick and grandpa is coming to pick him up. After waiting a few minutes for said child to arrive at my office because surely he's projectile vomiting with explosive diarrhea for the teacher to have bypassed me to call for a pick-up, I called her on the phone. In response to my asking what happened to be wrong with this student(in case I needed to follow up, etc.) She told me that he was not working and sleeping in class and that she knew he was faking, so she called grandpa to pick him up. (He does have a history of being sick-daily)

Excuse me? You just rewarded him for playing sick, risked his health in case he was, and pissed me off in the process. This is the same teacher that constantly sends kids with no pass or wants me to just "bring Johnny some Tylenol" without letting him out of class for an assessment.

Grrrrr... Not cool

Don't let it get to you, just remind your principal he/she is responsible for all this unless you are involved in it. If I don't know anything about it I don't worry about it.

Yeah, I had a 5th Grade teacher bypass me this year and call a parent. I had already fully assessed said student, who is a frequent flyer, and had send her back to class but teacher was convinced she was DYING. So she calls mom out of work (as a nurse no less) and tells her she has to pick said student up.

Guess who was back in school and just fine the next day.

Can you imagine if we tried to switch up their jobs? Yeah, it would go over like a fart in church.

You do your job, I'll do mine.

But Old Dude is right, people are going to do what they will do. And if that happens, I'm out of it.

Yeah - i agree... I gave up caring about things like that a long time ago. I will make it known that it's not a nurse excuse absence or whatever the heck they want to paint it as. But if a teacher wants to send a kid home for sleeping and being non productive in class - fine. Just don't drag me into it by saying that they are sick.

I feel the same way about the kids that bypass me and call home from the office or clandestine bathroom cellphone. That's fine - but don't expect me to excuse the absence when the office calls to find out if i saw you.

That's the thing! They will excuse the kid for being "sick" in any of these situations, which makes it look like I sent them home when I didn't.

It's frustrating. I have no back up from Admin. on this. I've taken to adopting the straight face and basically shrugging my shoulders.

Next time he is puking in your office send him back to her "cause you KNOW he is faking"

Do this, just don't worry about it. School nurses get thrown under the bus every day for something. We are always doing, or not doing, something SOMEONE disagrees with.
