Foreign nurse clamp down by NHS

Published

The role of nursing is being taken off the Home Office shortage occupation list, this applies to band 5 or 6 posts. Click here to read the full story on the BBC site.

I can't understand why the RCN are so mad about this, when there UK nurses that are unable to find employment, it seems like they have their priories wrong. I know there is a lot of nurses due to retire within the next 10 years but when the government spends so much to train nurses & then 80% of nursing students are unable to find jobs & they are forced to take jobs else where, there is the possiblity of them not returning it seems to make sense to take nursing off the shortage occupation list, it's not that it has to be removed forever.

Do i need any work exp before i can get a job over in spain?

Isn't that the main reason why Spanish nurses are happy to go from sunny Madrid to soggy Manchester - they need experience before they can secure posts back in Spain?

I seem to remember from discussions with the DoH's Spanish link and Welsh Assembly when Spanish nurse recruitment was introduced a few years ago, that there is some complicated chicken and egg type points scoring system in Spain linked to securing a job and getting promoted? Hence, Spanish nurses come here to get jobs to gain points to go back home.

I may have made this up as I can't find a link to any of it.

When I trained to be a midwife, there were two spainish nurses on my course there were only 9 of us. When they qualified they had to stay in the UK and practice for 6 months before their qualifications were recognised by the Spanish Nursing Boards. One was from Malaga and the other from Tenerife. They didnt train in Spain because the waiting list was forever and were shocked upon completion of their course that they couldnt just return and practice.

They didnt train in Spain

ok thank you very much to you all. I am a foreign student undertaking nurse training and funded by the NHS. Now where do you think this new ruling will leave me? My English is not too bad mind you, they made sure during the interview process ;) .
