For Those that Wear Support Stockings...

Do you wash them on the delicate cycle in the washer? (and avoid the dryer)

I'm getting tired of handwashing these things.

I have a stupid question.

I have been wanting to try such a product because for some reason by the end of the day one ankle is almost hanging over my shoe from edema, the other is fine. It almost looks worse than if both were hanging over my shoes.

I went to the Jobst website and there are lots of types and varieties. Which one do I want? Does it matter if it is for diabetics or one of the other many types they make? I also have no clue which type I want meaning, how hard they will be to put on. LOL Do I want the lighter weight ones that will be easier to put on or do they even work for those who wear them at work? Or, do I need the type where a crane will have to pull them up?

I'm having visions of the very first time I tried to put TEDS on a patient. WOW! What a work out!

At Walmart & nursing supply stores, you can buy support knee high socks & they are great! They come in white, black & blue, at least the ones I've seen. They keep your ankles slim & your calves energized!:) At Walmart they are called diabetic socks. Good luck!

Look at the ads on this thread! You can just click on the link. I'm going to do that right now.

Also, Bipley, if I'm not mistaken, I think some of the medical supply companies will help measure you, etc. ;)

Just out of curiosity, have you talked to your pcp about this? I always get suspicious when things are unilateral like that. Plus, hangin' over your shoe???!! That's bad! Are you taking care of yourself, nurse?...lol :)

I kinda wondered about the unilateral thing but it happens so often (so not a DVT) and I'm still kicking that I really don't worry about it. Except for the fact that it is obvious and fugly. Have to ALWAYS wear pants and shoes where it doesn't show as much and never dresses. I'm tired of it, I want normal looking ankles. I want to SEE my ankles! BOTH of them!

I was reading in this thread about Jobst stockings so I bid on some on eBay. I won the auction about 10 minutes ago... $10.59!!! Considering how expensive these things were I was pretty pleased with myself until I took a closer look at the auction.

I should'a paid attention to size. I just won an auction for a size XL! Not exactly my size. Well, it was my fault and not the sellers so I already paid via PayPal. I'll find some use for these. Stocking stuffers for someone next year! :p

You're so funny...lol

Hey, isn't it great that flares/bootcut/wide leg have come back in style? I have tree trunks for legs (no knees @ all - no matter what size i am - no "definition" i guess) and they definetly look better on me than those tapered jeans that were popular for so long...

I have trouble finding support hose for short, overweight girls!

I had my varicose veins injected a few years ago... but couldn't keep

up wearing the support hose and they are now coming back :(

Even the ones supposedly measured for didn't fit right. I couldn't stand them.

Now I'm back to square one.

Thanks for all the great info! I'm going to walgreens today!

When school started this year, I wore support socks I got from JCPenney (can't remember the brand, but they were men's socks, knee-high, but still fit my feet). I started to notice that I would feel dizzy during clinical when I wore them, but would feel fine when I wasn't wearing them. Was I doing something wrong? The pictures of varicose veins in our books are scary, and I've been trying to break the habit of crossing my legs, but have been nervous about trying support stockings again.

i wear the ones from walgreens. i think they hold up pretty well. i usually hand wash mine for between shifts, and then once a week throw them in the wash with my towels or whites to keep the stains to a minimum. low heat to dry, or air dry. i have had these two pairs for about a year. they make SUCH a difference. its great to come home from work without being in pain with every step you take, your legs throbbing, or feeling like you just walked thru 1000 miles of wet thigh-high concrete
