For the love of God- is this even right?!

Published

So I am in my first class at Indiana Wesleyan. Nursing Informatics.

Our first lessons?

NOUNS AND VERBS.

I kid you not.

Is this even right?! I feel as if I am stuck in a remedial class with the slow kids. I am just absolutely furious about this. I was expecting a Baccalaureate level school not a middle school learning environment.

are you serious? nouns and verbs? Maybe they are acronyms for something else in informatics. I hope they are.

NO. I am deadly serious.:eek::eek:

Our first assignments are to go through and circle/highlight the nouns and verbs, and to identify how each one is that. Also "learning" a touch about adjectives and adverbs as well.

We are also doing remedial APA stuff as well. "How to title an APA page."

I did NOT sign up for this......

This has nothing to do with technology in nursing.

I feel highly insulted.

Wow!! Have you been given a syllabus? Maybe you can still switch to another class?

Specializes in Gerontology, nursing education.

An APA refresher is always helpful, IMHO, just because it changes so often and it can be hard to remember, especially if you're focusing on the content of your paper rather than on formatting.

I would expect that this course would give you an introduction to the learning platform you're using (e.g., Blackboard or D2L), which is again always helpful.

Nouns and verbs? I don't think I'd be terribly happy, either.

I think I would probably be intensely looking for a replacement program and cut my losses now.

Cali, I am for sure.

This is just infuriating.

I also found out today that my textbooks, that are supposed to be included in with my program, are not.

Specializes in PICU, Sedation/Radiology, PACU.

This is an accredited program, correct?

I'd talk to the instructor and ask what you can expect from the class. Ask for a topical syllabus, if she has one. Switch classes, if possible. If you can't switch, just stick it out, get the credits, and the A.

Another misrepresentation. Another reason to find another program.

Syllabus states that it is to cover nursing technology. Mentions nothing about remedial English basics or APA 101.

It's accredited. It's Indiana Wesleyan for crying out loud.

My email back from my professor? Went on and on about the CCNE accreditation and then suggested that if I wasn't happy to find another program. Hardly a professional attitude if you ask me....

I guess you'll have to suffer through it. Maybe the remediation will help your writing skills for your capstone. I've tutored freshman nursing students and it sometimes amazes me that they passes high school with such terrible writing skills. Perhaps your instructor is a big believer in good writing and takes it upon herself to teach her students. Idk...

It would annoy me too, but at least it's just a semester. Maybe try to avoid this professor in future classes.
