I'm curious as to why those of you who are planning on moving or have moved over to the US have done so? What made you decide? The thrill of travel, new experiences, idealization of the US , spouse relocation?? What IS is about the US that makes people want to (or have to) come over?
On top of all that the nursing seems alot better - you have more autonmy and definately more staff which is a HUGE perk for us NHS workers :)
Not necessarily true - you can not do anything without a Doctor's order. For example - You cant change dressings, pull foley's out or put them in without orders. However on our unit (Orhopedic) there are a lot of standing orders for different Doctors....which is great as you dont have to ring the Doctor's every 5 minutes for something, but then you have to ring for other stuff!!! LOL
As regards to having more staff - I dont know what the staff/patient ratio is in the UK anymore but here where I work I can have as many as 8 pt's at night. The usual is anything between 4-6 pt's in the day - but that is on my unit and can be unit specific and then hospital specific. I am lucky in some respects as they are slightly overstaffed on my unit as they have 3 interns working there until January.

All we want is a pool in our back garden and be able to ski a few times a year.
