FNP Programs

Published

Hi all,

I know this has been beat to death, but I'm struggling to find the "right" FNP program. I'm a current RN in the State of Minnesota with years of diverse experience. I am ready to take the next step toward my FNP.

I need a program that works for Minnesota, I need one that is 100% online with few to no on-site college campus visits, I'd like one that offers discounted tuition to Veterans, and I'd like to complete the program in as little time possible. I do much better when I hit it hard and get it done quickly. Long, drawn out programs tend to lose my motivation and interest.

Any good advice out there? I'm currently looking into Simmons University, which seems to have everything I need. But, there are SO many of them out there, it's tough to nail down one.

Thank you all in advance for any advice you can offer. And, good luck to you all in your studies and careers!

Columbus State University in Georgia is a great brick and mortar school that offers online FNP program. The tuition is very affordable with no campus visit. They are accepting applicants for Spring and Fall 2021.

Whats the total cost?

Thank for you telling me about this school, a friend is moving there in a few months and was asking me about nursing school.

Im attending an online program currently. I'm so happy with my choice. I just read a great blog post on this topic. The post discusses onlin vs brick and mortar schools. I'll leave the link, its a great read and very informative. it helped me to solidify my decision on picking a school!

I do not recommend Walden. I graduated from there in May, passed boards for PMHNP in August. I cannot find a job in MN to save my life. I feel like the reputation Walden has as a diploma mill is hindering me. I passed my boards on my first try. That doesn't impress potential employers. With Walden, you are basically on your own. The clinical placement is an absolute nightmare. Save yourself the headache and heartache and choose a more reputable school. I actually looked at trying to transfer to a school in MN (St. Scholastica) while enrolled and was informed nothing would transfer from Walden. I was halfway through so I just went ahead and finished their program. I am really mad at myself for not doing more research.

I'm glad I ran across this thread again.  I was just about to pull the trigger on Walden University for my BSN/MSN/FNP.  Hearing things like this are what terrifies me when thinking about picking a school.  I don't want surprises!  Especially at the end or when trying to transfer credits.

Have you chosen a school yet? I’m stressed in trying to pick one! Right now I’m looking at American sentinel. Has anyone heard anything on this school?

Walden is a joke. Why on earth were you considering it? Didn't the lack of any real entry requirements and the fact that they basically start new students every month raise a red flag? They're basically a diploma mill.

Do you have any recommendations? I’m literally just googling and reading reviews. I plan to apply for the college in my state, but it’s really hard to get in. Almost 300 apply and around 60 get chosen.

It's supposed to be hard to get in, it's an application to become a healthcare provider. Difficulty of admissions should mean applicants work to beef the application, not find a diploma mill to take them without an effort or work.

Look into your local schools plus online programs at Vanderbilt, Duke, Frontier, Johns Hopkins, George Washington. If a school says for profit or advertises how you can become an NP at home in 12 days for 1000 easy payments of 19.99 you should probably skip it.

Ignore Chamberlain, Walden, Maryville and all the other for profit joke schools or you may find employers aren't interested in your resume.
