Floridian Looking to fly North

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am currently a nursing student down here in Miami Fl , thinking about moving up to Manhattan when I graduate. I heard starting salaries are pretty decent up there. Of course cost of living is alot more, but then again so is having a car with these gas prices ;)

Can you give me a good idea of life in New York ? I am a single 23 Male moving up there alone, can't convince my friends, they are moving all over the place as well. Are poeple up there completely rude ? I would imagine people here in FL are the worst around. Nobody speaks english and the ones who do , you sort of wish they didn't. Women down here are also equally aweful. Pretty much full of themselves and out for money in general. There are the few decent ones, and funny , seems like they came down from New York where women are actually , OMG independent !

Well if you could give me some information that would be very appreciated. Thanks and maybe Ill see you all in a year or two !!!

I have heard the same thing. :) I am very strongly looking at moving there, but I am trying to get a feel for the jobs there.

Is it easy to get an RN job as a new grad with 6 months exp. ?

What is the pay like on average?

How much are the taxes ?

Specializes in ER, ICU, L&D, OR.
Starting salary in NYC is averaging around $65,000 for a new grad. And this does not take in to account holiday pay, off-shift pay, etc.

Is that all

Specializes in ICU/CCU (PCCN); Heme/Onc/BMT.
Is that all

Hey Tom! Want to move to NYC?!?!? :D There's some great golf courses in this state too, by the way! ;)

But you got a problem

I hate cold weather

I hate ice and snow

would rather have tornadoes anyday

Ok a few questions. What would be the average cost of a somewhat cheap meal in NYC ? What is a decent area of Manhattan for the cost.....? Are there any good sites to look for info on NY and rent and whatnot without paying?

Also , as a new grad people are saying about $65,000 to start....what effects this salary from going up? Is there a significant increase after a year expereince? Also as a new grad can you work OT to get extra money? If so is it readily available?

I am very intersted in moving up there but worried about the cost of rent , and worried that if I want to get married and move into a house, I will never afford it on a nurses salary. I heard NJ was not all the nice from my friend living up there. Besides, I really don't want to have a car again.

That $65,000 is essentially base pay before shift differential, holidays, etc.

There is plenty of overtime available in almost any hospital, they may just want you to finish your orientation first. :)

Plus there is also agency work for extra shifts. Once you get your experience in ................Good luck....

The New York Times is a good place to check out apartments as well as jobs and you can access it on-line.

:balloons:

You can buy hot dogs on the street from a vendor, and a pretzel with mustard.. Sbarro's are all over if you want Italian such as pasta and pizza, little neighborhood deli's in almost every neighborhood. You can find cheap for a few dollars or as expensive as you would like. The Village has some great coffee houses with great desserts (if you are not watching carbs), as well as Indian and Thai restaurants. Just about anything and everything is available in NYC. One of the reasons that most of my students will be going there......easy to get around without having to learn to drive on the other side of the road...public transportation is always available.

Hope that this helps........... :balloons:

What are the decent areas to live in that aren't too ridiculous in rent ? And other than hot dog stands , are the restraunts or diners fairly cheap? Can you get a decent meal for $10.00 ?

It will come down whether or not there will be a vacancy in a particular building when you want to move. It changes continuously.

It depends on where you will be working. I would first look at hospitals before looking for an apt. Some hospitals actually own apts. Again take a look at the NY Times to get some idea.

Yes, you can get a meal for under $10. :balloons:

I saw quite a bit of nice properties in the NY times site. It looks like there are alot of decent 1 bedrooms in midtown or upper east side. I am afraid of uppereastside though , since isn't that connected to Harlem? I don't want to be moving from one terrible neighborhood down here in Fl, to one up there.

Also I have researched everywhere and cannot find a calculatior to tell me how much money I should expect to come out for taxes. ie if I have a $1000 paycheck down here in Fl, I expect about 150-180 to come out..

RobbieAllee,

If you are serious in your intent to move to NY do not listen to any distractors...clearly your intent is to ditch your car so, of course, you will need to be in Manhattan...and you can do it. I did it many, many years ago and although the $ amount would sound different it was actually the same almost impossible stretch...there is a way to do it...

Every May the college students leave for the summer and they sublet their apartments for 3 months for very reasonable rates...it is the same time of the year that bedrooms are advertised in the same place - posted on the bus stops near colleges (especially Columbia University, upper west side). You can find yourself a sweet little place to sleep while you check out a job paying more than you ever dreamed...besides high starting salaries for new grads you can get more by working the evening or night shift and pick up overtime by working extra shifts...save enough and keep your eyes open and you will find a decent apartment for a good price. New York will take care of you if you love her and stick by her...it just takes some time...

The hard realities for outsiders is even harsher than "I Dream of Nursing" let on...$800 for a basement place (not that I've noticed recently)...$150,000 for a 1BR coop (not in Manhattan)...plan on the reality of $1500. for a studio and $240,000 for a 1 BR (+ Maint)...that represents the improved market which had gotten as high as $1900 for a studio. Things are loosening up...I have started to see "No fee" apartment signs on buildings all over the upper west side...If you really want to do it you can...but you gotta believe...

Don't compromise...don't commute...You can do it! I have never for one minute regretted my "escape" to NYC in 1969...but I put in my dues...I worked my way up the housing ladder...it is worth it. It is the greatest life!

It is almost too late to start this year...there are still some signs up on the bus stops...but next year for sure...plan to come to NY mid May to the end of May and spend your time from 110th - 118th & Broadway...you will find a place in 1 week...Good luck!

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I have pretty much made up my mind to do the NY thing no matter what the cost. I was looking at several listings and they are No Fee and look to be in decent areas. As far as buying a house I probably wouldn't do that untill I got married or stayed up there for a few years and saved up. Im figuring about $1400 rent for a place....what that gets me I will be happy with regardless.
