Found out there is a waiting list today at my school for the nursing program. Looks like its gonna be alittle while before I can get in the classes and graduate. Wanted to ask you all, I will be 26 - 27 by the time I graduate, is that a normal age for RN's , or am i going to be alittle on the old side for a new grad? P.S. Me and my friend were discussing this..... Do Males in nursing professions up in NY or anywhere for that fact get respect from other guys, or women? I know its a great positon, but the debate is that its not traditionally a "mans" type of job..... And my friend keeps wanting me to ask, do nurses have to always clean up "messes" and do the bedpan thing daily or is that more for Nursing aids or lpns? Thanks alot, you guys are great

Will do. When I get up there I am not concerned about getting that NP degree right away. I think I will live comfortably off a nurses salary in the meantime right? I figure I'll get myself a nice little studio in a good part of manhattan, or decent part not 5th ave hehe Hopefully meet some people from work , make friends, and enjoy myself in the city life. It all seems so intimidating going up there alone, but the adventure is half the fun..... P.S. What is the salaries for NP's in NYC ?

No I definilty want to live in NY. I want to work and go to school there. I am thinking strongly about going to Columbia University and getting my Nurse Practitioner Degree. I will probably work for a year first so that my credits are cheaper than an out of state resident and get myself comfortable there. I don't want to put too much on my plate at once. I will be going up there solo so I hope to meet some great people and enjoy myself alittle before starting back up into the grind of classes .

I want to work in emergency medicine, or critical care. I really don't want to do the Jersey thing. For me its all about living in New York city. I want to live there, not just work there. I want to walk down the block and hit 20 stores, and restraunts and enjoy the manhattan lifestyle.....even if it costs more to do so. Eventually i'll make enough to live very comfortably i am hoping.

Thanks to you all for your help and support. I am really looking forward to moving up to the city. I have done alot of research on it, and once I graduate and save up some money I will be moving there. Can anyone tell me what the difference between neighborhoods is in manhattan. Like is Murray Hill a good area? Sojo ? etc.

Thank you for the words of encouragement. I have pretty much made up my mind to do the NY thing no matter what the cost. I was looking at several listings and they are No Fee and look to be in decent areas. As far as buying a house I probably wouldn't do that untill I got married or stayed up there for a few years and saved up. Im figuring about $1400 rent for a place....what that gets me I will be happy with regardless.

I saw quite a bit of nice properties in the NY times site. It looks like there are alot of decent 1 bedrooms in midtown or upper east side. I am afraid of uppereastside though , since isn't that connected to Harlem? I don't want to be moving from one terrible neighborhood down here in Fl, to one up there. Also I have researched everywhere and cannot find a calculatior to tell me how much money I should expect to come out for taxes. ie if I have a $1000 paycheck down here in Fl, I expect about 150-180 to come out..

What are the decent areas to live in that aren't too ridiculous in rent ? And other than hot dog stands , are the restraunts or diners fairly cheap? Can you get a decent meal for $10.00 ?

Ok a few questions. What would be the average cost of a somewhat cheap meal in NYC ? What is a decent area of Manhattan for the cost.....? Are there any good sites to look for info on NY and rent and whatnot without paying? Also , as a new grad people are saying about $65,000 to start....what effects this salary from going up? Is there a significant increase after a year expereince? Also as a new grad can you work OT to get extra money? If so is it readily available? I am very intersted in moving up there but worried about the cost of rent , and worried that if I want to get married and move into a house, I will never afford it on a nurses salary. I heard NJ was not all the nice from my friend living up there. Besides, I really don't want to have a car again.

I have heard the same thing. :) I am very strongly looking at moving there, but I am trying to get a feel for the jobs there. Is it easy to get an RN job as a new grad with 6 months exp. ? What is the pay like on average? How much are the taxes ?

Wow, 65000 is a great starting salary for new grads ! What does that come out to after taxes? For a single mail with no allowances how much should I expect on average to come out of my paycheck? What percentage? 30 % ?

Well i suppose if i am making decent money I can get a more expensive place since I won't need a car. I know people anywhere can be nasty, I was just saying on average up there , whats the norm? I will most likely be living somewhat near a subway since I heard they are everywhere. I realize that everywhere has bad apples, we have too many down here hehe Thanks for the advice.

Well I'm definitly not looking at bringing my car up there. The car payment, insurance, and parking is too expensive and not worth it. I wanted to live in the city and use the train and bus to get where I need to, or walk :) As far as Jersey , what is a decent area that has public transp. into the city? I was looking at coming up to NYC to rent at first for awhile untill I settled down. If I got married , then I will look for a house or permanant place. Some people told me that parts of Brooklyn were nice and you can get a decent place for $300k in a good neighborhoood. Thing is I live in Miami and though I know the crime here is some of the worst in the nation , I want to move somewhere that I don't have a good chance of getting shot at every day haha What about the taxes in the city? Are the income taxes unbearable? I heard they are pretty aweful ? And ......I am very curious about the poeple of NY . I heard from alot of people that they New Yorkers are rude and very unfriendly. That the women are stuck up and downright nasty. Now this is coming from Fl people who have never been there and all the NY'ers I know are really great people. What's your opinion on that living there? Thanks!!!

What about Brooklyn? I heard they have decent housing there......though living in FL , we hear all these stories about how bad the crime is up there. Which I think is funny since Miami is in the top 5 crime states in the nation every year. I am alittle nervous about moving up to New York for the simple fact that I don't know what to expect 100 % and I'll be going up there solo. How bad are the taxes up there? If I make $1000 a week, how much shoudl I expect to be taken out for taxes? $150 ? 200 ? more hehe
