Floridian Looking to fly North

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am currently a nursing student down here in Miami Fl , thinking about moving up to Manhattan when I graduate. I heard starting salaries are pretty decent up there. Of course cost of living is alot more, but then again so is having a car with these gas prices ;)

Can you give me a good idea of life in New York ? I am a single 23 Male moving up there alone, can't convince my friends, they are moving all over the place as well. Are poeple up there completely rude ? I would imagine people here in FL are the worst around. Nobody speaks english and the ones who do , you sort of wish they didn't. Women down here are also equally aweful. Pretty much full of themselves and out for money in general. There are the few decent ones, and funny , seems like they came down from New York where women are actually , OMG independent !

Well if you could give me some information that would be very appreciated. Thanks and maybe Ill see you all in a year or two !!!

Cost of living is right

Rent in the burbs, u cant get a decent apartment in a crappy area for less than 800 dollars. Some basement apartments are like 800

Food is cheap, this is America after all.. Gas is going up, ive seen between 2.25 and 2.41 for premium.

Car insurance went up after 9/11 because nyc is now a threat so we gotta get coverage for that

Your paying 3 different taxes, state federal, and local

Depending upon ur lifestyle if you smoke cigs are like 7 a pack

a good cosmopolitan can run u 10 bucks

Houses are starting to go down in prices cuz interest rates are finally starting to increase, 1 familys went from 400k to like 350k ..co-ops are like 150k for a 1 bedroom but then u add maintenance

traffic violations went up and parking in some areas are atrocious

parked in a no standing zone is like 115 so is double parking

pedestrian ramp 165

and trust me they'll find a reason to write u up because the city needs the money

hope i helped u

oh and the ppl here are really friendly

if ur actually talking about living in manhattan

FORGETABOUTTIT

double everything i wrote

Yes after looking into things, I think I may move to chicago instead. I want to live in the city and ditch the car. I woulnd't move up to NY to live in suburbs again ;)

NJ isnt far from NYC ..They pay just as well, and its an easy commute to the city ..Cheaper houses with lots of land and property and the jobs pay just as much over there..going rate on a RN u can get is 50 an hour ...My source was from careerbuilder.com so dont qoute me on that

toodles

What about Brooklyn? I heard they have decent housing there......though living in FL , we hear all these stories about how bad the crime is up there. Which I think is funny since Miami is in the top 5 crime states in the nation every year. I am alittle nervous about moving up to New York for the simple fact that I don't know what to expect 100 % and I'll be going up there solo. How bad are the taxes up there? If I make $1000 a week, how much shoudl I expect to be taken out for taxes? $150 ? 200 ? more hehe

U get what u pay for in Brooklyn ...a thou a week will get you by ...But if u want a house in a decent area where they only steal bikes and someone might scratch your car then your looking at a house for 400k ....my boyfriend pays 800 for a 2 bedroom basement in Marine park the things i listed above isnt gona get u by with a 1000 a week ...your mortgage alone if u put down 20 % will run u 1868 a month then u add the bills ...then theres yr other option...renting ...which will be slightly cheaper ...my advice JERSEY

jobs are good houses are cheap lots of land car insurance is reasonable

and its easy commute to the city

im thinking about moving there but i hate the winter there ...its always like 3 degrees colder and i already freak out about the weather lol

any more questions let me know

Well I'm definitly not looking at bringing my car up there. The car payment, insurance, and parking is too expensive and not worth it. I wanted to live in the city and use the train and bus to get where I need to, or walk :)

As far as Jersey , what is a decent area that has public transp. into the city? I was looking at coming up to NYC to rent at first for awhile untill I settled down. If I got married , then I will look for a house or permanant place. Some people told me that parts of Brooklyn were nice and you can get a decent place for $300k in a good neighborhoood. Thing is I live in Miami and though I know the crime here is some of the worst in the nation , I want to move somewhere that I don't have a good chance of getting shot at every day haha

What about the taxes in the city? Are the income taxes unbearable? I heard they are pretty aweful ? And ......I am very curious about the poeple of NY . I heard from alot of people that they New Yorkers are rude and very unfriendly. That the women are stuck up and downright nasty. Now this is coming from Fl people who have never been there and all the NY'ers I know are really great people. What's your opinion on that living there?

Thanks!!!

Someone lied about a decent neighborhood in brooklyn u can get a house for 300k ..put it this way im looking for a house in ANY boro for at least 400k ..women can be nasty anywhere u go...but if anyone man or woman is nasty towards u for no reason it usually means they have self esteem issues and to make themselves feel better they take it out on u

crime isnt bad, although even 'good' neighborhoods have their bad apples ...and the thing is whenever u live near a subway or something that commutes to the city ur gona live around bad apples because they want the same thing u want

i think clothing tax alone is like 8.6 n whatnot

its like 1 am now im gona go get some sleep

good luck

Well i suppose if i am making decent money I can get a more expensive place since I won't need a car. I know people anywhere can be nasty, I was just saying on average up there , whats the norm?

I will most likely be living somewhat near a subway since I heard they are everywhere. I realize that everywhere has bad apples, we have too many down here hehe Thanks for the advice.

Starting salary in NYC is averaging around $65,000 for a new grad. And this does not take in to account holiday pay, off-shift pay, etc.

Wow, 65000 is a great starting salary for new grads ! What does that come out to after taxes? For a single mail with no allowances how much should I expect on average to come out of my paycheck? What percentage? 30 % ?

My (pretty much uneducated) opinion (just from a brief 4-day visit, staying in times square LOL) is that people in NYC are incredibly friendly... I couldn't believe it, going out to the bar I don't think I paid for one drink- people there seemed to love tourists. I did notice that people don't hold the door for you and will cut in front of you if you pause or falter. That didn't bother me. The rude salespeople at the larger stores bugged the heck out of me- but oh, well, they could take it as well as dish it out. The salespeople in the smaller shops (upscale as well as not) were just wonderful.

I would move there if I could, I just loved NYC. :) You need to visit, RobbieAllee, then you'll get a feel for it and see if that kind of life would suit you.
