Floridian Looking to fly North

U.S.A. New York

Published

I am currently a nursing student down here in Miami Fl , thinking about moving up to Manhattan when I graduate. I heard starting salaries are pretty decent up there. Of course cost of living is alot more, but then again so is having a car with these gas prices ;)

Can you give me a good idea of life in New York ? I am a single 23 Male moving up there alone, can't convince my friends, they are moving all over the place as well. Are poeple up there completely rude ? I would imagine people here in FL are the worst around. Nobody speaks english and the ones who do , you sort of wish they didn't. Women down here are also equally aweful. Pretty much full of themselves and out for money in general. There are the few decent ones, and funny , seems like they came down from New York where women are actually , OMG independent !

Well if you could give me some information that would be very appreciated. Thanks and maybe Ill see you all in a year or two !!!

Will do. When I get up there I am not concerned about getting that NP degree right away. I think I will live comfortably off a nurses salary in the meantime right? I figure I'll get myself a nice little studio in a good part of manhattan, or decent part not 5th ave hehe Hopefully meet some people from work , make friends, and enjoy myself in the city life. It all seems so intimidating going up there alone, but the adventure is half the fun.....

P.S. What is the salaries for NP's in NYC ?

It is "more" but you'll pay the price...one step at a time.

Found out there is a waiting list today at my school for the nursing program. Looks like its gonna be alittle while before I can get in the classes and graduate. Wanted to ask you all, I will be 26 - 27 by the time I graduate, is that a normal age for RN's , or am i going to be alittle on the old side for a new grad?

P.S. Me and my friend were discussing this..... Do Males in nursing professions up in NY or anywhere for that fact get respect from other guys, or women? I know its a great positon, but the debate is that its not traditionally a "mans" type of job..... And my friend keeps wanting me to ask, do nurses have to always clean up "messes" and do the bedpan thing daily or is that more for Nursing aids or lpns?

Thanks alot, you guys are great

RobbieAllee,

Nursing is an excellent profession and more and more people (male and female) are making mid-career changes so you will find you are right in step age-wise. At this moment you are still young but over the next 10 years most of the "old-timers" will be gone and you'll probably be average age but still on the young side.

Regarding the type of work - That depends on a number of factors: the type of unit (orthopedic, cardiac, pediatric, ambulatory surgery, med/surg, dialysis, etc), the type of hospital (Hosp for Joint Disease, Columbia Babies, Bellevue, a VA Hospital, etc), the part of the city (Harlem, Upper East Side, Lower East Side, etc), the strength of the Clinical Coordinator as a leader, the teamwork (or lack of) of the people working in that unit, etc. It has been my observation that the RNs are generally aware of their patients' overall status and are still filling in the gaps wherever they are noted. That means compensating for all levels of personnel from doctors to housekeepers and everything in between. That is the nature of the profession. If there are particular nursing tasks that you enjoy and others that you don't enjoy you should consider the different types of nursing and choose an area that matches your nature. If you are headed for a med/surg floor just to "put in your time" and to get basic experience before you move on to a specialty it really won't matter where you are...just jump in and enjoy it. I guarantee you'll never be bored.

U get what u pay for in Brooklyn ...a thou a week will get you by ...But if u want a house in a decent area where they only steal bikes and someone might scratch your car then your looking at a house for 400k ....my boyfriend pays 800 for a 2 bedroom basement in Marine park the things i listed above isnt gona get u by with a 1000 a week ...your mortgage alone if u put down 20 % will run u 1868 a month then u add the bills ...then theres yr other option...renting ...which will be slightly cheaper ...my advice JERSEY

jobs are good houses are cheap lots of land car insurance is reasonable

and its easy commute to the city

im thinking about moving there but i hate the winter there ...its always like 3 degrees colder and i already freak out about the weather lol

any more questions let me know

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY A "DECENT NEIGHBORHOOD"? I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN BROOKLYN, BTW I STILL LIVE THERE. I MOVED OUT OF NY FOR 1 YEAR AND 1/2 AND WENT TO NEW ORLEANS, WHERE CRIME WAS/IS HORRIFIC! CRIME IN NYC ON THE WHOLE IS THE LOWEST EVER. BROOKLYN IS THE BEST! THE NETS ARE MOVING HERE AND THEY ARE ALSO BUILDING A FILM STUDIO AT THE BROOKLYN NAVY YARD AND BTW THERE A PLANS TO EXPAND THE PIER.

YES THERE ARE A FEW BAD APPLES HERE, BUT THAT IS EVERYWHERE. RENT USED TO BE MORE AFFORDABLE IN BKLYN BUT NOW WORD HAS GOTTEN OUT THAT BROOKLYN IS THE PLACE TO BE AND RENT HAS SHOT UP TREMENDOUSLY. THIS IS ALSO DUE TO THE FACT THAT PEOPLE ARE MOVING BACK TO THE CITY FROM THE SUBURBS.

IF YOU WANT TO MOVE TO JERSEY, THAT'S FINE BUT IF YOU WORK IN NY YOU'LL GET TAXED DOUBLED AND YOUR COMMUTE WILL COST YOU MORE.

AS I STATED EARLIER, I'VE LIVED IN BKLYN ALL OF MY LIFE AND I'VE NEVER HAD ANY FEAR OF LEAVING MY DOORS UNLOCKED OR TAKING STROLLS DURING ALL HOURS OF THE NIGHT. I'M NOT SAYING THAT THINGS CAN'T HAPPEN BUT YOUR ABOVE COMMENTS WERE UNJUST AND UNFOUNDED. PEOPLE LIKE YOU USED TO SAY THE SAME THINGS ABOUT HARLEM AND WHERE ARE THOSE PEOPLE NOW? - IN HARLEM!
