Hey fellow first year or more..nurses

just curious......I just came off orientation.....I have 5/6 pts, 3-11:30pm shift.

To date 1 hour 15 mins so far(clocked out at 12:45 am), that was a 6 pt evening.

I just finished my 8th week of orientation and had 3 patients the other day. Doesn't sound like much compared to some of the other posts. One of these was a very needy post-op. Had to work an extra hour and a half to finish charting. Didn't have usual preceptor that day and I missed 2 IV starts. I don't get paid for the extra time. Wish me luck!!! Going for 3 again on Sun. I am allowed up to 6 months of preceptorship, work on a very busy Medsurg floor with lots of very supportive nurses and management. I feel lucky so I don't mind having to stay late. Once I'm on my own though I will want to get paid for overtime. ;) Overtime has to be approved by house sup and manager, so lack of time management skills on my part probabley doesn't qualify!!!

Damn! I wish I could precept for 6 months! I have 8 weeks! 2 weeks for 3 pts, 2 wks for 4, 1 wk for 5, 1 wk for 6, then 2 weeks splitting the pod with my preceptor (so I'm on my own, but she's still there to help)... then I'm completely on my own! Those final 2 weeks start on Sunday, and I'm TER-RIF-IED!

eek..I want to be an RN...

First I have at the moment 23 pts on a sub-acute unit, second, I have to chart on every single one (paper charting) because they are medicare...

I so want to only stay 10 minutes after my shift... It would be nice to go to bed before 2am. I work the 3-11:30 pm shift and I live only 10min from work

Today I broke old record of staying 1 1/2 hours late and was there until 2230. Yikes. Of course everyone was late today even the experienced RN's stayed about 1 hour late so I guess I was right on staying 2 LOL. Seemed like everytone was on edge today and we did have a full house. Anyway yes I work day shift 0700-1930. My three patient load is going well. I found out today that they want me ready first week of June. So yes I know I am lucky to have this long of a preceptorship ( I statrted second week of Jan.). I work in a smaller hospital in a med size town. Our Med surg where I'm at takes all ages as there is no Peds floor. Well learning more everyday and getting more efficient at some of the tasks. So hang in there everyone i know this is one of the hardest things I've ever done. ;)

I work nights on a busy telemetry floor and am a new grad with almost 7 months on the floor. The latest I have been is 1 1/2 hours on a VERY busy night where I had not charted one thing all night, but I had all my work done. Our hospital REALLY discourages staying late. I'm just waiting for them to say something to me about staying late (I almost never get out on time, but usually only 15-20 mins late). There are some nurses (2 I can think of right off hand) that ALWAYS stay HOURS late. So, I'm just waiting for someone to make a comment about me staying late. I'll have an earful for them!

I work at a small critical access hospital and usually have 4/5 pts. I have been on the floor 2 months and on my own for the last 3 weeks. We are encouraged to leave on time, and everyone tries to help out so that no one has to stay more than 5-10 minutes over. I did work an hour over on Tue. I had four pts. discharged two, admitted one and had a combative/agitated pt. I couldn't leave until I charted and gave report, which didn't happen until we could find someone to sit one-to-one with this pt. Being such a small facility a house coordinator had to sit with the pt. Thankfully this is not the norm! :wink2:

I will, on average, stay about 20 to 30 minutes past my shift. Our managers float around and ask "what are you still doing here?" I just clock out at 730 and do the extra half hour on my own. Everyone will gasp at this, but it really doesn't matter to me. It's worth it to me to tie up my loose ends and finish correctly, than to go home w/ things not done and me up thinking about it all in my sleep. I have had nights where I was there about an hour or more late, but that is more infrequent now. Only if I've been in a code or perhaps had to document a fall or something. (Love it when the ER sends up 4+ incoherent, demented patients who all decide to fall down at shift change and WE have to stay late and write it all up.

But I feel w/ all the documentation, there is NO WAY to get out on time unless you have normal and unneedy patients -- which is a rarity on dayshift w/ crazy family members hanging around. lately the family members have absolutely made my job maddening. I cannot even touch a chart to document until after 4 p.m.

I don't see how management can just ignore this. They are purposely ignoring it, IMO. Of course, everyone has to be SuperNurse.

The only way I could see getting out on time was if I was to take NO breaks and no lunch all day. I refuse. I need my a.m. 15 min break and I'm sorry, I need 30 minutes for lunch. I am human and need to take care of myself if I am to take care of 4-5 folks all day and do right by THEM.

What gets me is that on our unit, the travelers seem to have no problem staying late. No management getting on top of them. They get paid "out of a different pot" and so they just stay late if they have to

Which means they take it easy most of the day as well, while we staff members run like chickens all day long.

I don't get the unfairness of this.

Long term care, latest I left was 12:30...shift ended at 10pm.

I'm rarely there an hour past my scheduled time now.

24 residents...

Work 7p-7. Once stayed until 9 am. I had two admissions that night. In fact, we ALL had two admissions. It was pretty much the worst night ever.

The latest I have punched out was 1hr 20 minutes after my shift was over... it was 2 days ago. I was supposed to do 7am-7pm, but got an admission from ER at 5:15pm (same time as I had to send my other pt to the nursing home) and discharged my new admission at 7pm (he should have not come in to the unit in the first place)... I talked to the manager and she told me I still have to do all of the charting for the new admission, so I did not punch out till 8:20

the latest i stayed over....the shift ends at 0700 so i ended up leaving at 0910 because i was still charting. but lately its been 0730 at the latest and its mostly because some of the nurses dont get there on time to get report (some are even new grads, you would think they would be trying to be on their p&qs because it is our first year). they always show up at 0655 or later which gets on my nerves because report time starts at 0642-0645. if i give report on time i am out of there by 0705
