Rapid response? House supe? They should leave you with a CNA. At our hospital there must be at least staff of two on each unit which is safer. I agree for safety this is appropriate.
  2. Yes I have taken it. I was very happy with the whole thing from registrtion to them transfering my credits. Very user friendly online and informative course.
  3. Try Weber State. They have a chem class that satisfies most BSN requirments. Sorry forgot course number. All labs done online. It is a good course you have to study by is do-able while working....
  4. I just want to say that your expierence is so normal for what is expected of us new nurses. We just want to do a good job and were taught in school to theraputically communicate and know in our hearts that just spending 6 to 8 minutes in a room is not a safe or effective way to give care. I am like you in that if someone needs something I try to do it. What if the CNA doesn't come and the pt doesn't get the help they need to go to the bathroom and they fall. I've been at it for two years now and it does get better, you get more confidence and you do learn how to effectively delegate better. I don't know if this is an option for you but after a year of days i have spent the last year on nights. It has given me a chance to come into my own as a nurse meaning you can actually spend more time with your pts. Nights can be just as busy as days but in a different sometimes more manageable way. Anyway good luck to you and you will start to notice a difference the more time you put in. Please take care of yourself too!!
  5. I agree with the above post 100%. I will write an incident report up if I have done something in error if I am aware I did it. I guess the only thing different is at our facility we have this new computer based incident report where if you don't name witness or someone involeved it will not let you file the report. When we did the old way on paper it was that way. No names. Anyway this whole thing is oviously still a learning process for me as well!!
  6. She should have told you she was writing the incident up period. They say that occurance reports are used as a way to tract quality and for learning. At our facility they say they are not part of the pt record and are used for internal use only. I have only been a nurse for 2 years. Unfortunalty some of the best lessons learned are learned when we make an error or forget to ck something. That being said maybe the day nurse didn't ck the iv until 1030 or even 0900. Did you ever think that maybe the iv infiltrated on her shift? I don't like to play the blame game and believe pt saftey is our number one priority. Hopefully she warm packed his arm and no harm was done. Bottom line to me is the day nurse should have been more upfront with you concerning her future actions. Keep up the good work. One thing I am finding is that some nurses no matter how good they are will do anything to cover there own butt. Sorry if this sounds harsh. I know that the pt is number one and with this in mind you must also protect your own license. I try to be a total team player. if something has gone wrong or been forgotten I will go to the nurse responsible and tell her or him. if it is glaring and has caused harm I will write it up sure, if not I leave it up to them if they want to write it up or not. Maybe that is incorrect though and I should just do it. You sound like a good nurse hang in there we will learn to play the game and also give the best care possible.
  7. I've narrowed my search (for now) down to two schools , University of Toledo and Jasksonville University. These schools appeal to me because they do not require you to go to school in the summer and i did like their class selection. Yes you are right it is very expensive and I am still not sure about even if I will choose one of these. JU will waive your application fee if you apply and have your transcripts to them in a certain length of time. Thanks for starting this thread as I am anxious to hear what others think about all the schools as well.
  8. Hello, What did you find out about Jacksonville credits. Will they transfer? Thanks I am thinking about them as well but want to make sure they are reputable
  9. Hi, I know somethimes they don't use zofran at least at my hospital because it is the most expensive compared to lets say phenergan. I believe that Reglan is used more for helping with GI motility then as an antiemetic. In my 2 years as an RN I've given alot of zoran and phenergen, some reglan not much compazine. Have not had anyone display the extapyramidle effects, but then again I am only using the drugs short term in the MedSurg setting.. You have to be careful with phenergen IV as it is very hard on the veins and is also a sedative. We are finding that zofran SL works really well. Anyway hope this helps.
  10. For the female insertion I recon the meatus. Before I open up the sterile stuff I get the pt ready and in position. I do a good peri care or if she/he can I ask them to. Next for the female I just say I am going to make sure I have the right area to insert the foley and use a flashlight to get a visual on the meatus and get help if need be. Evere since I take the time for the visual no problems. On another note I had to do an insertion on a pt with foreskin the other night. Make sure to gently get the head of the member out before you attempt. I know this sounds remedial but for some reason I forgot the other night and had to get a second cath. Definatly worth it to bring two in as previously mentioned.
  11. Thank-you so much for your reply. Also I love your name!!
  12. Hello fellow awesome medsurg nurses, I am trying to decide on which medsurg certification to go for. The ANCC or the AMSN. I welcome all opinions and advice.
  13. I am almost two years out and totally know what you mean. It is obvious from your post that you are a caring nurse that wants to do the right thing by your pts. This one night things were just going crazy on our unit a code way more admits then we could deal with with the code and acuity levels present. Our manager came in and everyone pitched in but I felt vulnerable. After that night I went to the NSO web site and got the insurance. I never felt like getting it before then even though i had and still have all your concerns. Maybe you should look into it if you are worried about liability. Thanks for you post
  14. Quit smoking and vote the candidate. I am in the middle period and miss smoking.
  15. Hello Just keep on studying and working hard!!! You know I think that the pre reqs are harder but the time involved per credit is more for the nursing classes plus your staying up late getting ready for clinical going in early to clinical. Like me now I am going for my BSN. Took the statistics really hard second sem chem hard but now am taking a nursing elective Critical Care Nursing. Well I love the class cause now that I am working can relate to everything more but man lots of time reading discussion board etc. Good luck pre recs are hard but the nursing classes are harder in a different way
