Hey fellow first year or more..nurses

just curious......I just came off orientation.....I have 5/6 pts, 3-11:30pm shift.

To date 1 hour 15 mins so far(clocked out at 12:45 am), that was a 6 pt evening.

An hour and a half here--we got slammed right at shift change and I had to chart...ugh!

Not counting the time I worked 3-11 and was mandated to stay 11-7 (thank goodness for the charge nurse that came in early at 5 a.m. to relieve me) - about the latest I've stayed is 45 minutes to 1 hour past shift.

Longest was 1830-1130, surgical IMCU. That was a terrible night.

I'm about one month off of orientation now and the longest I've stayed is probably an hour. Charting LOL!

i have been working for about 8 months now. i work post partum so unless L&D decides to roll over an admission at 0645 (which they love to do) I usually get out on time. i have stayed about 2 hrs over though for a staff meeting.

I have been a nurse for a year now, but only a few months working in an acute hospital, on an acute medical ward. the longest I've stayed is 25minutes after my shift and that was because someone had to go pick up a pateint from endoscopy and the late shift were at break when they called, so I went.

I usually leave on time or max 10 minutes after my finish time. I don't know if things are different in the US but here (UK)we just hand over work that we haven't had time to do,eg. dressing that needs changing. i try to get as much done as I can but i can only do what i have time to do. our managers encourage us to leave on time and shoo us out the door at the end of the shift. we don't get paid for the time we stay over.

I try to do my documentation as I go along so that I don't have to do much at the end of the shift. I can then add any important stuff later, but most is done halfway through the shift.

Specializes in ICU.

hmmm...longest would be two hours past my 7.15-7.30pm, first to finish up myown documentation, then to help another nurse who was overwhelmed.

I work 12's - 0700-1900. The longest I've stayed is about the same as you - until about 2015. I'm normally out of there no later than 1945. That night, though, my husband called me on the unit around 2000, asking what was going on.

I don't mind the extra pay, but it sucks when that cuts in to my sleep!

I talked to a girl who graduated from my school 2 years ago. She said when she moved from nights to days, she would end up staying until 2300 some times to finish her charting. I thought I had it bad! That actually helps me keep it in perspective... :nurse:

I wish I could hand over my work! If we do that, the night nurses report to their charge who reports to our charge, and we get reamed! :nono:

I LOVE 1830 admits. All I have to do is get the patient settled, make sure they're stable, and do admission vitals. Because of the time, they automatically roll over to the night shift. 1700 admits SUCK though because you have to do EVERYTHING for them before 1900... and that 2 hours flies by!

10 minutes is the longest for me. I work in a complex continuing care unit, 4/5 pts on days, 6/8 on evenings. We use Meditech charting and is ok now that I have had some practice.

Once I got the hang of Meditech, it was a blessing :yeah: - esp. compared to the paper charting I did in the county hospital.

I don't worry about being late because I can put in for my time and get paid for it.Can anyone else do the same?

You betcha! And, as a new grad on days, my manager better be expecting that I'll be doing this more when I'm on my own! After report, if I have anything left undone, I WILL be staying late to complete it, so I don't get reamed for not doing it.

I'm sorry, manager, that's what you get for trying out a new grad on days with the same amount of training the a new grad on nights receives!
