First week of class wasn't what I expected.

Nursing Students Male Students

Alright, this is my first post. I'm new to this so if I make any social web faux pas I ask to be excused. I was kicked out of my Nursing program the first week due to...irreconcilable differences between the instructor and I. I simply cannot imagine spending 2 years being taught by a woman who seems to have no passion for the field of Nursing. Any recommendations of good Nursing schools in New York State?? Thanks so much, and Take care.

I don't have the knowledge to recommend schools in New York. However, I will give you a piece of well-meaning advice. You are going to meet lots of people in your nursing career -- instructors, bosses, co-workers, etc. They will not all live up to your ideas of perfection. If you can't get along with them in spite of your differences, you will not make it in nursing -- or just about any career, for that matter.

Please do yourself a favor and learn to deal with all types of people in a constructive way. That's the only way you are going to survive in this world.

Good luck with that.

I have to agree with the above poster.

I have had instructors I hate and loathe.

I have had instructors that I think were inept and taught because they couldnt hack floor nursing.

I have had unproffesional instructors that would chew the class out for being immature...then would quit without notice or throw tantrums.

I have had classmates aggravate me so bad that I would not pee on them if they caught fire..

No matter how bad the people are you come in contact with...in the end it's not about them..it's about you and what you can handle.

I always imagined that I was putting in clinical practice in dealing with po'd doctors, angry non compliant patients, other RN's who had all the warmth of a shark...If I couldn't handle a teacher how could I handle the above.

I feel bad you left your program, maybe it was for the best but I have read too many post of the struggles many nurses went through to get into a program. For some younger students the highlight of their lives thus far was being accepted into a program. I wish you luck and hope you find the direction you are looking for.

Nursing is dealing with people, and no matter where you end up you're not going to agree with or like every single person you work with or come in contact with. Be the bigger and better person in those situations. Be a nurse.

Alright. Thank you both so much for your advice.

In response to llg: I completely agree with you and understand that in my Nursing career I will meet people I don't see eye to eye with. However, that will be my profession which I will be paid for. As for my Education, I pay for that and I'm not going to waste my money to attend classes taught by unfit instructors. I'd gladly "Learn to deal with all types of people in a constructive way" if you would so kindly pay for my college education. K, thanks.

In Response to careteam70:

You were slightly more eloquent in your response...but once again, I'm not going to pay to have unfit instructors attempt to teach me.

Chansen, Same to you. Pay for my education and I will gladly be "the bigger and better person". =D

Well this is misleading ...

You only refer to one person in OP

Then you refer to the entire staff ...

Of course you would get that kind of reply ...

But yes, it's your money, head over the NY / NJ boards under Regional for opinions from other students

I am going to be the odd man out and encourage you and to keep pushing forward. These people do not fully know what the situation was you were facing, so rather then putting down your perserverence. Keep it moving, and brush off the negative remarks.

My school wasn't what I expected either. It's rather student-oriented and relaxed. I imagined these school marm-esque instructors in white nursing dresses, stockings, and those hats and capes you see them wearing in old movies. Thanks a lot All Nurses. I actually like going to class, lol. I have fun.

Exactly what negative remarks?

I actually see good and valid advice, based on experience.

To the OP - I hope you can get the education that you pay for.

That was my thought, also, on reading the thread. However, so many students here seem to only want responses that tell them what they were hoping to hear -- anything else seems to get characterized as "negativity" or "eating our young."
