First day in school for LPN....

Published

and already I have had someone question why I would bother since "the pay sucks and no one will hire LPN's" This was coming from a nurse friend I know online who also lives in Ontario.

I can't handle 4 years now.. I have an almost three year old, no money, I am getting married next august. Not to mention, my math grade was too low for me to get into RN now, so I would have had to take that over and THEN apply- not even knowing if I'd be in then.

I may go for RN eventually, but my plan was to do this first, then work for a bit and then do the rest part time to get my RN- thought I am hoping they will have some kind of bridge in place by then...

I wish people wouldn't make me feel so discouraged. Why do RN's have to sit there putting me down over this?? It's just so mean.

i had a job before i graduated lpn school. just got my second lpn job, this time in an er and was hired on the spot. and wherever we did clinicals, we were immediately subjected to recruiting. like sahmu4ia said, treat it like a job interview. i can get a job anywhere i want. i can choose to do what i want. and i can get lots of certifications, thru work, thru napnes, nflpn, advance....the list goes on. here are just a few, please add if you like!

don't let anyone's personal opinions influence you. i heard the same thing, "why not just get your RN?" you have to do what is right for you. where i live, i can do almost everything an RN can do except IVs, and plan to get IV certified soon. i make good money, actually looking at getting my first new car. LPNs ARE nurses, don't let anyone try to tell you differently. remember, it takes all kind of people to make the world go round, and even more kinds of healthcare professionals to make a facility run sound!

Don't listen to what other people say. I am 38 yrs old, and have a 5/7 yr old boys.

I did the pre-requisites for the RN, but then decided to apply for the LPN, after they messed up on my points in the entrance system they have here at the college.

I am glad that I decided to do the LPN first. Then later, if I decide to, I will go back and apply to the LPN-RN bridging program. It seemsnot that I am a LPN, it was the best decision I could have ever made. Now I can work as a LPN, while going into the RN program, rather than working as a CNA.

Step by step is the best way to go I believe. Hang in there, you can do it. For you and for your children.

GOOD LUCK!!!:balloons:

I would continue with your education and do well, there are always people who preceed doom and gloom.

One thing you have to remember, is that while there are always those that are saying that you should do something else, there are others who wish they were YOU. Think of how many people wish to be a Nursing Assistants, for example. Others who wish that they can work ANYWHERE in civil service on the city, state or federal level, even as a housekeeper, dietary aide or CNA. (Not putting down these positions; just saying that there is always a person that considers themselves to be worse off that we are). What about the homeless person who wishes to rent a room? There will be some people who really wish that they had an opportunity to become a nurse, and you have one. You WILL be admired, respected and valued by SOMEONE...and you will give incentive for someone else to take one step further in their career based on watching what you are doing.

I will not deny that there are many who devalue LPNs. But, we are working an honorable profession, and there are jobs available for them, otherwise, the programs would not exist. I have not been without extra money since becoming an LPN; in fact, at times, they will not leave me alone. I have had to make a decision of where I will work when I have a day off; is it as a vaccination nurse, a home care fill in case, or my hospital?? As I keep reading, my teaching skills have greatly improved, so, my patients always look to me to explain what is happening with them, because I have discovered ways to teach simply without losing it's meaning. The RNs I work with respect me, because I am great in researching great deals of information from reliable resources. It was a win-win for me, and it can be for you, too. Good luck!

Congrats on working on your LPN. Don't let other people knock you down. You are doing what you need to do for yourself. LPN's can get jobs. Hang in there.

I don't think "all these RN's are trying to be mean. UR in a situation that you're choice of schooling makes perfect sense to me. Not only will it give you much-needed experience, you will also find the bridge to RN program further down the road. LPN/LVN school offers alot of bedside skill and experience. Don't doubt yourself, think of your future & I'm sure with determination it will work well for you. Personally I kept a picture of my boy in the bathroom and every morning I'd say this is for you big guy. And it reiforced what I was doing was right for me at that time.
