First day of nursing School *unleashed* post yours

Published

Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.

It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.

I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.

I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!

It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:

- Why nursing?

- Semester goal

- 3 year goal

After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!

Then she started the syllabus, in which:

  • 50% are tests
  • 10% presentation
  • 10% group work, participation
  • 5% post test
  • 25% finals.

Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.

Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...

She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)

Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).

She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.

She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)

So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).

We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm

So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)

Comments are welcome!

Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!

Wow, everyone, thank you so much for sharing. I will post my first day also, and I start in January.

Wow, this thread is amazing. I just finished reading all 18 pages! I am beginning an ASN program in January and this thread has made me so excited, anxious, and nervous all at the same time. I had my orientation last month and I was so excited to see my schedule. We went over our school's nursing student handbook, but I, being so anxious and enthusiastic about nursing school, had already read it three times! lol Needless to say I already knew what it contained. I was so shocked two days later when I was officially registered for my classes and had my major switched from "undeclared" to "nursing".

Reality has now set in and it just struck me that I will be starting nursing school next month. I can't wait! I still have supplies to purchase such as a penlight, new stethoscope, shoes, bandage scissors, etc, but I am very tight on money right now so I will have to wait another couple of weeks before I can get everything. And I can't wait to walk out of the bookstore with my 10 bags full of books:)

Thank you so much for starting this thread, and please everyone, let's keep it going! I will definitely post about my first day on January 11th. I can't wait to offically become a nursing student!

I had read our student handbook 4 times before I started nursing school LOL, It was one of the few things on the nursing website for my school and I was on the waitlist for 3.5 years before it was finally my turn to start so I had a lot of time LOL It's funny because I was remembering policy's that changed from one of the times I read the Handbook before some changes were made :p

Specializes in Critical Care, Clinical Documentation Specialist.

I have already read the handbook (129 pages - seriously!), and I haven't even found out if I've been accepted or not! I got it bad.... lol

Specializes in Cardiology, LTC, SANE.

This semester has been sooo intense, but in January I will be a junior! I took Pharm, a med-surg class called Core Concepts, and Health Assessment. My exams are next week, and now that I have come close to the end, it is amazing all that I have learned. I have learned to give many types of injections (SubQ and IM), IV push, IV piggyback, oral meds and nebulizers. We also learned how to fully assess a patient and create care plans. I'm just so glad I am getting a break soon-our whole class needs it! :)

First of all, I would like to say congrats to everyone who has completed nursing school, and to those who have just started. It actually all started last week at orientation, and when I got access to our online black board which has everything on there, from syllabus, to assignments, and quizzes, etc. There was already a reading assignment over 5 chapters that we had to complete before yesterday. Yesterday was the first day of class, and it flew by. The first two hours the instructors were going over the stuff on the web that we need access to, and how to get to the different resources that we'll be using, etc. Then the last two hours we divided up in teams and played a fun game, which tested our knowledge over the chapters we read...and the team I was in was 1st place!

Last night, I stayed up late reading the chapters for today's lecture. Lots of interesting info, and looking forward to today! :)

Today is lecture again, and we'll also begin learning how to take blood pressure and vitals, so I need to bring my stethoscope and blood pressure cuff to class. Wednesday we'll be going to the simulation lab (clinical). I'll find out what group I'll be in before Thursday, because that's when the class will divide up and 10 students will go to the nursing home for clinicals, and 5 will be in the sim lab for a couple weeks, then we switch.

This is going to be hard work, but I'm looking forward to it, and I'm going to give it 150%. My husband jokingly started calling me a nerd last night...and I'm proud of it! :D

I have already read the handbook (129 pages - seriously!), and I haven't even found out if I've been accepted or not! I got it bad.... lol

Don't worry....I have too! haha! Hopefully I will be able to tell everyone about my first day that will be in July if I am accepted! Eek I really hope I get that opportunity! All of these stories are making me so excited and nervous, and even a feeling of being a little more prepared (only a little haha)

My first week of nursing school was absolutely AMAZING! I have learned so much more than I ever expected in the past four days. Monday was the very first day of class for me. I had a Fundamentals of Nursing lab class 8:00am-10:50am. Due to my fear of being late and having an hour commute to school, I left my home at 6:00am to head out for my first day. I was able to sleep somewhat that night. I would wake up every now and then, but was able to fall back asleep. I got up at 5:30am and since I had laid out my clothes for the day and packed my backpack the day before, I did not have to do any preparation in the morning. I was so nervous on my way there and felt like I was having a panic attack. I got there super early and waited in the parking lot until I saw other students enter the building. I went into the building and found the classroom for my lab class.

I did my pre-reqs at a different campus so I did not know anyone at my new campus. Everyone else seemed like they knew each other. I made small talk with a few of my classmates, but pretty much just paid attention to my instructor. My lab instructor seems very encouraging and it completely eased my fears of nursing instructors. We learned about hand washing, standard precautions, and range of motion movements. On Tuesday we were quized over the material (I received a 100%!) and were checked off on our handwashing and range of motion skills. I passed both! We also watched a very informative video on vitals and that was it for the day.

On Wednesday I had my first Fundamentals of Nursing class which was a lecture. I have never, ever wanted to be a nurse more in my life than I do right now after hearing another great instructor teach our class. I also had this class on Thursday as well. We learned about the history of nursing, nursing roles, the different nursing organizations, nurse practice acts, the nursing process, professional values, ethical decision making, being an active advocate for our future patients, effective communication, the different types of laws, the importance of being aware of cultural differences and respecting those differences...so many topics, but I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. I realize that this is why I want to be a nurse! I have so much passion and drive now, I want to learn as much as I can to be a competent and knowledgeable nurse.

Today after Fundamentals we had our first Pharmacology class. That's when the nerves came back, lol. It really is a lot of information, but I understand the importance of everything and why we need to know all of this information. Our future patients are relying on us to be knowledgeable in every aspect and provide them with the best care and education that they deserve.

I am so happy with my choice in campus and am very happy to have the instructors that I have. They all seem so willing to help us. We just have to make sure we continue to show them our desire in return. I have had so much studying to do this week already, but I wanted to take a break and share my first week with everyone. I doubt I will have much time in the future. I know there will be challenges that will come my way, but as long as I keep focused I truly believe that I will be able to overcome them. I have worked so hard just to get to the point where I am today. I am determined to learn everything that I possibly can. I truly want to be the best advocate that I can be for my future patients.

After that long post, I forgot to add something. This forum has really prepared me for what to expect in my first week of nursing school. I knew I would have a lot of material to study and chapters to read, so I was not shocked at all like some of my classmates were. I do not think I will make that many lasting friendships with my classmates since I did not seem to click with anyone, and everyone is already forming their "groups". I suppose it is still early though. However, I am grateful for this forum, because I can still connect with other students and nurses and still express myself to those who understand.

Thank you so much to everyone on this forum. :)

Such a great post! A lot of info!!!

Good luck in your school: in good and bad days. You'll be a great student I can tell it just by reading your posts. I am starting my school on Jan 25!!!

Hi guys and gals. Yesterday was my first day of Basic Pharm. and Physical Assessment. I am so nervous about this class. We had spring break last week and during spring break before the class started the teacher had posted 14 chapters that had to be read. I have only gotten through 5 1/2. We have 4 pop quizzes, two test, and a final. If anybody have any tips on how to study for the class and learn the drugs please let me know.

I am starting nursing in Fall 2010 and this topic is really great. Atleast I know what to expect. I am planning on taking General Chemistry and Precalculus this summer.I think that might help me but don't know? Any advice. I took Medical terminology last suumer. Should I go over it again. I am so nervous and have no previous medical experience.

I really did enjoy it and I'm planning on adding to it on Sept 8th lol. My first day of school is the 7th and it is a very long six hour nursing lab but I can't wait lol.
