Well, I would like to share my first day of nursing school experience.
It all started last night when i could not go to sleep, then I woke up at 4 am, because I was so excited and anxiety had taken over! Well I got up, took a shower, took care of the dogs, and even ironed my uniform.
I ended up leaving home at 6 am, for the 1 hour commute, since I was afraid that I would be caught in the middle of traffic.
I ended up at school at 7 am, I sat in my car, had my coffee, and at 730 people started showing up. Well I found out that classes would not start until 9 on the first day, since they had people lost on the buildings, trying to find the classrooms, teachers coming back gathering loads of stuff, from a side to another, and finally classes started. It was funny to see all my peeps from pre-reqs there in addition to some other new faces!
It all started by our Pharmacology teacher (we have pharm all day long on Mondays) asking us to write a paragraph on:
- Why nursing?
- Semester goal
- 3 year goal
After we wrote that, she made us one by one, read it to the class, as an introduction! Well, I heard maybe half of the people with the CRNA goal, the other half with money/or NP goal, LOL hopefully they'll get there!
Then she started the syllabus, in which:
Which is not bad. My first impression is that Our teacher is a nice Lady, she has been a NP for 12 years, and on still works 2 days a week on her private practice, which I thought was a plus, since she is updated on things.
Well, then lecture started, and we went over the nursing process, and then the 7 rights, and then we covered chapters 1 and 2 of the book (keep in mind 5 hour lecture LOL) the funny thing is: We have to know chapters 1-9 by next Monday!!! For our first test, she will give us multiple choices only, and will allow us to use a 4X6 flashcard, where we can write stuff on one side, and hand it to her, then she will return it to us on the first test day, keep in mind that we have 5 tests. OMG that is a lot of info, even though I had answered the questions already on the study guide...
She is really nice to us, always asking if it is all clear, anymore questions! I like her I guess! (Although you know... some people on the break room already started venting... blah)
Then she was telling us that we will have clinicals starting on the end of the month, so we can learn how to talk to our patients, practice some basic skills. (For the first 3 weeks we have Thursday and Fridays just for skills!!! 10 hours a week!).
She said that we will not do any invasive skill on ourselves, meaning no drawing each others blood, or giving any sort of injection. How the hell am I going to learn??? How did you guys learn this??? It makes me wonder, since I have no previous experience with that other than a few lovenox abdominal shots.
She said that in May we will start giving IM, IV, Sq, and all that good stuff. (But then again with no previous human attempts! She said that if we were to do it among ourselves, somewhere else... Whatever! But not in class!)
So it was exciting today, lots of information, and homework! Can't wait for tomorrow (but I am ok, anxiety level is down now).
We have fundamentals ALLLLLL day tomorrow, starting at 8-2pm
So, bottom line, so far I am very happy with everything, the nursing staff seems amazing so far (have dealt with them since pre-reqs) and all my classmates are cool (of course, there is the sleepy one, the parrot one, the repetitive one, the fancy girls, the CNA knows it all's, but they are ok so far!)
Comments are welcome!
Those who start(started) soon please post your experience here! Lets make this thread last all the way through our graduation!!!
I will be starting school in a week! :w00t:I have printed out my syllabi for my Core Concept: Individual and Pharmacology classes (59 and 44 pages respectively). I also plan on picking up my uniforms for clinicals soon...it's coming down to the wire. I'll be back in a week or so to talk about my first day and I hope it goes well. :heartbeat
Hello everybody!!!
I am sorry, that I did not post much, because you all know how finals are right?
well, right at this time, i am so glad to inform you all that I passed my medsurge class!!! YEY
I can say that by far this was the worse class that I have taken (not the hardest) but with heavenly help I was able to pass this. Even though we had barriers, a very demanding instructor:zzzzz, whose teaching style seemed a bit tough:confused: (which in the long run resembles just like another bump on a nurse's education endeavor) I took my finals on monday, and after 2 days of waiting, and not being able to concentrate on my OB finals (which i took today and will come update yall, but i think that it was just fine) I got my email with my grade!!!
YEY I passed it with a few points to spare, a high B:D, but who cares, just passing that class with the obstacles that we had, a C would have meant just the same:wink2:!!!
Yall... I am now starting my last semester before practicum!!! peds/mental/advanced health! after that NCLEX!
I am just so happy, and tired, exhausted and excited at the same time!!!
It meant a lot guys... it really did!
hope yall do great!
will come and update OB, and you will hear from me!:typing

this is a great post! i think that everyone should do this about their first day! i start on the 24th and this makes me feel a whole lot better! i have bad anxiety too about the first day. i hope my first day goes as smooth as yours! im nervous about giving injections too! thats probably going to be the worst part for me. thanks for your post! it makes me feel better!
Yeah, I took OB this summer too, and passed with an 88.9 . I was so upset w/myself. My first B in the program all because I botched the third exam. It sucks too, because they took a lot of questions off that exam, and I got all the ones that they gave points for correct, so I didn't even get a single point... I had a 97 average before that test
.
Lesson to be learned here:
STUDY STUDY STUDY, and when your done with that STUDY! And when you think you know the material pretty well, pretend you don't and keep studying!
Shooting for A's!!!
Hello there, it has been a long time since i last posted here, so here we go:
This semester things have gone insane, taking advanced med-surge, pediatrics, and mental health together is a killer! But you know what? It is definitely doable.
We have had a crazy schedule, some times even were on clinicals for 3 days on the same week... I love the rush (such a dork!)
It is so funny when you are in class and people start complaining and whining, and you are studying, then a test comes along, they barely make it, so I now lie on my grades (because Thank God I am doing ok, but if i say so they get even more mad!!!) Oh my Lord... can girls complain!!!
Pediatrics clinicals were so awesome, i had great experiences, umpacking surgical wounds, plenty of IV ABO's, lots of respiratory issues, and some cardiac aswell.
Our clinical instructor was awesome, she was so good to all of us, and we rulled that unit, man... i will tell you the nurses even cried when we left!!! we were helping them out so much, even on the little things (when i was not busy i called IT and had them come fix the computers at the unit, and did all those maintenence things,) Our instructor gave us so much confidence, and even trusted us with 3 patients at the same time, we got to do admissions, discharges, even got to go to the OR!!!!
Advance medsurge was cool as well, I L-O-V-E my teacher, she is heaven sent for sure, that woman is amazing, made us understand all the cardiac drugs, ecgs, critical care, all the renal stuff, she made us learn so much and not memorize!!! I can not thank enough for having her as a teacher!!! Clinicals has been fun, got some complicated patients to deal with, some trach, some PEG, some of everything...
Mental health, huhhh... not so much, quite boring to my taste but we got to go through it...
So today I took my proctored exam for Pediatrics ATI, and did great!!! i have a chance to get a level 3 on our second attempt, i got pretty close to it!!!
bottom line,
I am feeling a change to wrap up the year with A's babehhh!!!
now only leadership and practicum to do next year...
(that is if I am still feeling this confident after finals!)
Later yall!
WOW...this is a very interesting thread, and I have learned a lot already! LOL Now I know what to expect on my first days of nursing school. I will be starting a two-year program in January at a community college. Thanks so much for all the valuable info, and congrats on completing this hectic semester!
Congratulations on all you have accomplished to far :yeah:
. It must be getting even more exciting for you knowing that you are almost finish.
My favorite so far has been Peds and OB I absolutly loved, loved them :1luvu: I'm currently doing mental health and can't wait to be done, It seems every week I diagnose myself with a new mental illness . So starting Jan I just have Intermediate and Advanced Med/Surg and I'm done:anpom:
Wow, this thread is amazing. I just finished reading all 18 pages! I am beginning an ASN program in January and this thread has made me so excited, anxious, and nervous all at the same time. I had my orientation last month and I was so excited to see my schedule. We went over our school's nursing student handbook, but I, being so anxious and enthusiastic about nursing school, had already read it three times! lol Needless to say I already knew what it contained. I was so shocked two days later when I was officially registered for my classes and had my major switched from "undeclared" to "nursing".
Reality has now set in and it just struck me that I will be starting nursing school next month. I can't wait! I still have supplies to purchase such as a penlight, new stethoscope, shoes, bandage scissors, etc, but I am very tight on money right now so I will have to wait another couple of weeks before I can get everything. And I can't wait to walk out of the bookstore with my 10 bags full of books:)
Thank you so much for starting this thread, and please everyone, let's keep it going! I will definitely post about my first day on January 11th. I can't wait to offically become a nursing student!
