First day of Nursing School..

Published

...and it was a SUCCESS! I enjoyed every minute of it, even the parts where the lecture got boring haha. For the first half of the class, I was taking notes by hand even though I had brought my Ipad to take notes. The second half after my hand was tired and starting to cramp, I decided to try out my Ipad even though I was pretty self-conscious since no one else was using any electronic devices to take notes (we are allowed to use them in class for note taking).

Let me tell you what! I LOVE taking notes with my Ipad. I am paying more attention and focusing more because I am typing instead of handwriting where I occasionally will put my head down, be tempted to doodle, let my mind wander, etc. I am using the app Notability for taking notes and it is awesome! It also has a voice recorder, so as I am taking notes, it is syncing what the instructor is saying to correspond with the words I am typing. I haven't checked on that yet, so we will see if it is really syncing.

I have a case with a "built in" keyboard that can be removed from the case and set on the table. The side of the case has Velcro so I can angle the screen as much as I want and move the keyboard to wherever feels most comfortable.

**And to those who will say things like "might as well just use a laptop if you're going to add a keyboard" or "it is just an oversized Iphone", please refrain. I have a laptop, but fact is, my laptop is huge. It has a big screen and considering the amount of big, heavy books I have to take to class, I really appreciate something small, light, and compact. My ipad fits perfectly into my backpack whereas I'd need to carry my laptop case seperately.

I'm not saying that using an Ipad or any other electronic device will be some life altering event towards note taking, but for me, it really did make the difference.

If you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend doing so! And if it's not within your budget, you will still do awesome note taking anyway. :)

Thanks for all who have posted about Notability!

OP: keep up the enthusiasm! Best wishes on your journey! (I remember my "high" after my first clinical! We were not allowed to "do" anything - but I was on Cloud 9! I still love clinicals.)

Trolls: every one of us had a first day. Every one of us had enthusiasm. Let's support each other, not tear each other down. Like my mum says: "if you don't have anything nice to say, ****!" (Yes, she really says that!)

(One final, one semester, one final and NCLEX away from LVN! That's a lot to cram into the next 5 months!)

First day was good.First day of lab is a different story. I didn't wash out the conditoner completely from my hair before going to bed.Tried to put a glass in the knife drawer, then into the trash, then a dirty paper towel in the sink. I dont know what else I did today.

I remember my first day, it feels like it was just last week. I wasn't anxious but I was definitely not sure what to expect, and I ended up with some great teachers, and sat next to a girl that I am now fast friends with as we begin our last semester :) It WILL get stressful and crazy, but it really does FLY by! I get my semesters mixed up all the time because I can't believe it's been almost two years since I started. Enjoy the crazy ride, as I said, sometimes you just want to lay down and cry, throw in the towel, but other days it is awesome and you can't picture being anywhere else. The good and bad even out!

Wow, in the first few replies I've never seen anyone so sour on an education program that lasts for a couple or a few years. Sad to see people view learning as such a burden.

I'm glad I share OP's enthusiasm. Glad the first day was fun!

Gosh I'm jealous I want to be in nursing school so bad (applying for Fall 2013 here). As far as having an ipad that's awesome wish I could afford one but good ol' muscle memory works great for me. Good luck in NS!

of course it was a success...you still have that new flame

just wait until that flame gets whipped around and eventually snuffed

then you'll feel like i do today

i envy your new student sparkle.

What an ignorant thing to say.

Next week I am sure I will feel the same! I'm happy that your first day went so well! It's actually comforting and relaxing to read something like that (especially when I've been feeling nervous and nauseous this past weekend!) Thanks for sharing your experience, keep posting! I look forward to reading! :)

I started today! I was mostly just desperate to get the syllabus so I'd know what to expect! I've been filling in my UnCalendar all evening and wow...I'm going to be insanely busy.

I wish I was as crazy excited as everyone else on here seems to be! I'm just tired lol.

Our first day is on the 5th but I already had to test off on a few skills today. (hand washing bedbath and occupied bed making) I passed them but when I took off my gloves it was wayyyy gross. I was so nervous that my fingers looked like I had taken an hour long bath. LOL I hope my nerves calm a bit so I don't have sweat filled gloves for my entire time In NS.
