they are probably talking about private loans. if you have bad credit, you probably won't get a private student loan without a co-signer. students can get stafford loans regardless of their credit history. so to answer your question, no. "financial crisis" doesn't keep people from getting the help they need for school. you just have to look around at your options.

As IM says federal student loans are not credit based. All you need to do is fill out FAFSA. So I'm assuming you've done that for the 08-09 school year. Your school financial aid office handles the rest.

This scares me A LOT - I am an international student, paying for my prereqs at local cc out of pocket this year, but next year will have to find $40000+ a year for Case Western. As an international student I dont qualify for aid or most loans, need a specific international student loan, with a US citizen as co-signer - this is getting harder and harder to achieve!!! Anyone who wants to co-sign with a good credit rating let me know :chuckle:chuckle:heartbeat:rolleyes:

It really is a deplorable situation.

Its almost to the point where students will have to work to pay tuition and cut back on other luxuries (i.e. eating out 10x's per week and unlimited texting plans) to pay for books. I thought this was America.

Bicster -

Do I sense a touch of sarcasm in your post?? LOL

I live in a very affluent area here in CT, though my family certainly is anything but rich.. we have a tiny little apartment and live paycheck to paycheck. We live here because we both work here. I'm so sick of seeing 16 years olds cruising around in BMW's and Lexus'. They go to ultra expensive private schools and probably never work a day in their lives. God forbid they may have to go to a state school and work to pay their way!! I've only ever gone to cc and have had to pay every penny out of pocket as I've never qualified for financial aid. Welcome to the real world kiddos!!

I just read a similar article in my local paper yesterday. High school kids are worrying about not getting loans for school because banks are going to be a little reluctant to give out money during this crisis. My heart goes out to those students who truly want to go to school to learn and better themselves. But for those who are just going to their elitist schools for the sake of social connections, or because that's where mommy/daddy went, and will essentially waste 100K+ just to come out and live off their trust funds, you won't find an ounce of sympathy here...

And on the other side of that coin, if students can't get loans to go to very expensive schools they'll opt for state schools. If enrollment goes down at the expensive schools, they may have no choice but to lower their outrageous tuition in an effort to increase enrollment. So this crisis may in turn give less than fortunate students a chance to learn at a top-notch school if they can afford it.

I agree to a point, however for me I would not be able to get into community college without waiting several years, and that would result in losing my visa status and my child being separated from either his father or mother. I have tried cheaper schools, but around here they all have waiting lists, plus this is an accelerated program and in 4 years i would be NP, so overall is better than others offered here. Hell, it would be free for me to study in the UK, but then I would not see my son, who lives here, for 5 years, but hey, guess only spoilt people choose rich schools and just because they can!!!!

It really annoys me when people assume and go on about the relatively few rich when I already know several really good students who have dropped out of cc because of gas costs to ride there. Also, as a parent I will do everything I can to get my child and step children into the best school I can, to make sure they are provided for and have the best education possible, amazes me people would delibrately send their children to a cc if they are able to improve their chances by sending them to Harvard and have access to the resources.

It is one of the reasons America (and nowadays Britian) has so many problems, jealous of the haves and an attitude that no one deserves what they have, education should be a right anyway and it is up to people to utilise it.

Scares me the assumptions that people who are going into a caring profession will make, suppose they will not be treating the drunk drivers cos it is their own stupid fault they got injured?

I'm really tired of the notion that the only reason I need student loans in order to go to school is because I am financially irresponsible and live outside of my means. I work a full time job as does my husband just to pay our bills. We do not have brand new cars or a huge house or eat out every night.

When we first got married our education and current jobs were enough to pay the bills and have some savings. Thanks to gas doubling and groceries sky rocketing, that is no longer the case for us. I am furthering my education so that I can get a better job to better support my family. Unfortunately for me I do not qualify for any grants so loans are my option at this point.

I tell you I am so tired of people looking down their noses at me. I am busting my rear end to better myself and my family but apparently I don't deserve to be going to school since I can't pay cash for it. Seems to me that if I had enough money to finance my education on my own I would have a good enough job that I wouldn't really need to be in school in the first place!!

I hope you were not taking my post personally. I was simply venting and speaking for the area I currently live in. I would never, ever judge someone under my care based on their financial circumstances. I'm simply talking about school and such. Trust me, I am not making assumptions. I grew up in this area, have known many many other people who also grew up in this area, and I know what I'm talking about. It's scary but true. Furthermore, I too am a parent and of course I too would like to see my child attend a good school but the reality of that is that most of the "better schools" currently cost and arm and a leg.

Yeah and there are some of us who need the student loans to survive--in order to feed ourselves Food Lion brand foods and feed our families, but hey, this is America.

A friend of mine has so so credit and had his mother cosign on his loan and was denied quite a few times. I too applied for a loan (I have really good credit) and one student loan company in particular had me jumping through so many hoops, I finally turned to a different company. Although I got a loan, my interest rate was like 13%! I am so scared to that I'm going to be paying off these loans for the rest of my life. :sniff:
