U.S.A. Michigan

Published

DMC and Oakland community college is sponsoring a short term 12 month LPN program through the michigan works agency no more driving to Toledo...classes have already started. Just thought I would spread the word!

Hey,

How's your process going? Have you started any classes?

I haven't, I'm still trying to determine if I should move back to Detroit, or use an address or go to Toledo School of Practical Nursing. I'm going to go to and information session on Milwakuee on Thursday just to get the information. What about u?

I have turn in all the necessary information and now I am waiting for the career planner to contact me. From their they will let me know when I can start classes.:yeah:

Thats what i am waiting for too. i hope it don,t take too long,i have been waiting for a long time to get into a nursing program.

I hear a lot of talk about PSI and Toledo Sch. of Pract. Nursing. I'm in Toledo, and am in a program at Owens Community College. It's a few miles down 75 just south of downtown (5min), and if you are looking into schools in Toledo, I'd check it out, too. It's MUCH cheaper than the other Toledo schools (even for out-of-state), and all of your course work transfers to RN programs (not so in many programs). Three days a week, class was out by 2p. There are online courses available for some of the science courses (nutrition, pharmacology, and A and P).

When I read about the competition in Michigan, I feel really bad for you guys! Then, to hear about you paying $14,000+ for a program that doesn't transfer any courses (PSI/Brown Mackie), it is pretty frustrating!

Owens still requires high grades, but if you're at least a 3.0 GPA and have your nurse aide certificate (required), I can't imagine a wait beyond one semester. There's also a LPN/RN bridge program at Owens after you get your LPN.

At any rate, one more place to check out, and I am SO happy with the program and the school. It's tough, and about 3-5 students (I think-will see for sure this summer semester) out of 28 didn't pass, but I hear a good percentage don't at PSI (they accept almost ANYONE, but a lot don't make it through).

Good luck everyone!

Hi amjowens, I was wondering is owens farther from southeast michigan than psi? I went to the meeting at psi and it seemed like it took forever to get there. I might take a look at owens, especially with all the classes transferring. Thanks!

Oh I almost forgot. As far as the nurse aide certification goes, I have been a cma for about 10 years now. Would I still have to take the CNA?

PSI probably takes longer since you don't have a direct route from 75. To Owens, you take 75 south, past the city section of Toledo, and it's the exit just past the bridge over the river. It's about a mile off 75, so it's actually more direct in my opinion. Definitely, I'd say time-wise, Owens is closer, but you'd need to map-quest or something for the mileage, etc.

As long as your certificate/state licensure is current, Owens accepts that you are a nurse aide. There are students in my class from Michigan, and maybe you'd need to take a test or something for OH licensure (doubt it), but that's something you'd need to look into for your specific circumstances. I needed to take the course prior to applying because I wasn't a nurse aide, and it took a full-time 2.5 weeks to complete. What a pain!

I applied to Owens LPN program in July of '07. There's a January class and September class start date. There was a test (Compass) on basic math, english, and (if I remember correctly) critical thinking. I had taken pre-RN courses, so I had A and P, Micro, and basic humanities completed. These aren't required for the LPN, but depending on high school science, may need to take an anatomy or math, etc., if haven't taken any courses/didn't do well in high school/too long ago, etc. There are advisors, though, and they are really clear about what's needed, etc. I was shocked when I got my acceptance for Spring '08. I thought there'd be a long wait, or I didn't have enough requirements fulfilled. I also was accepted for the RN for Fall '08, but I deferred that to Spring '09. I might even wait and do the LPN bridge program, since it is only 3 semesters long (starts only in Sept). In a way, I want to start the RN asap, though, since I have the seat. I'll see.

My books and supplies, for in-state, is less than $2,000/semester. This summer, it will be about $1300, all included. So, in all, about $5200 for the program. For out-of-state, I know a little higher, but not by much. Plus, like said, my nutrition, pharmacology, and any other courses taken that are needed in RN won't have to be re-taken.

The Owens website is www.owens.edu. If I can help you out at all, let me know. I am SO thankful to be at Owens, especially since I did look into the other schools and have clinical instructors who also teach at one of those schools to tell me how good I have it! And, don't let the admission process "scare" you at Owens-just do your thing, and it DOES work out. It seemed really overwhelming to me, but it did work out better than I could have even imagined.

I went to the 1st orientation. It was basic, i didnt get alot of info, But i just took the tabe test and they told me to wait for a call back, but no info on what steps to take to move the process along.

So i called and found out I have to turn in all this documentation (dipoma, financials, etc) before they'll make my next appt (i wish they wouldve told me that, i wouldve turned it all in when i took the tabe test last fri!!!)

I feel like im in the dark with the steps and because of it, this process is going to take forever and im desperate to get into their next program.

PLEASE HELP!!

Can you guys who have gone thru this process give me a brake down on what the steps are so i can get on it and accelerate my admsission into this lpn program please?

Feel free to message me if you'd like or just post a reply.

Lastly how long from 1st orientation to final step did it take for you guys and did you get into the NEXT program after completion of all the required admission steps?

Thanks for letting me know. I appreciate the info and assistance.

Hello to everyone,i just called the healthcare career center and they told me that i should be hearing from someone when it is almost time for the next class to start either by phone or mail.so the ones that are waiting for a career counsler to call that will be around the time the next class will start.:)

Can you possibly tell me why is it so hard just to find out information about the Detroit Healthcare Career Center ? (ex. Breakdown of the classes taken for LPN) When you call there number an automated service comes on and issues the wrong Mi Works Number. I will attend the information session on Tuesday, but it would be nice to go with some information that is needed from me. Question: If you already have a CNA license do you have to take it again or will they denie you admittance to the program since you have a nursing certificate to work with now? (Mi Works feels as if you have a CNA license you can work and you don't qualify for additional training)

Detroit Healthcare Career Center Is A Ladder Program And If You Already Have A Cna License You Do Not Have To Take The Cna Program There But You Will Have To Go Thru Success Training And Pca And Then Apply To The Lpn Program And Take The Teas Test! I Am A Student And I Love The Program And The Teachers They Are Great! And They Also Have A Medical Adminstrative Assistant Program! Thats Pretty Much The Basic Info! If You Have Any Other Questions Feel Free To Pm Me!

Goldie glad to hear you love the program, but if you already have a CNA why do u have to take the PCA or anything else if thats a requirement already? Where exactly is classes being held for the program?
