Finally Here 12 MONTH LPN PROGRAM IN DETROIT

DMC and Oakland community college is sponsoring a short term 12 month LPN program through the michigan works agency no more driving to Toledo...classes have already started. Just thought I would spread the word!

i got in with no problem. we start clinical in 2 weeks already :uhoh3::lol2:

if you ever have any questions or anything please let me know. also, we have a nursing guild that i and the nursing director are in charge of, you should join our group, it will give you a more insight of what really is going on and you can meet the other nursing students. sometimes talking to the ones who are in the program can ease your mind a bit.

i have been told so many different negative things from directly from career advisers to steer me away from this program. when i went to michigan works and talk directly to a career advisor they were so negative to me about the program. they advised me in so many words that it was a waste of my time to try to get into to the program. i was told by the advisor that by the program being new that it could take alot long than what you think to finish up the program. for one: the program is not quite organized yet by the faculty and staff so the dates as to when classes would begin may not be set. for two: there will be alot of people trying to

get into the actual nursing program after they have completed all the neccessary steps to get in (met grades and cna license requirements etc)

there is still no guarantee you will get in because there will be alot of people trying to get into the program and not enough spaces so you could be waiting a long time trying to get into this program and you might as well

be going to a community college or university to get into a program.

these are all the things that the career advisor told me at michigan works. i'm not saying this to discourage anyone from attending if thats what you really want to do, do it, this is just what i encountered when even making to first step to trying attend the school, maybe someone else has completed the program and they have more positve feedback, but i didn't get any.

Every program has ups and downs, just as everything in life does. It was a very good program, and I graduated 3 weeks ago. We all worked very hard, studied, and finished. Yes, it is a new program, but for being new they did a great job and had very experienced people working with us and teaching us.

How would the person from Michigan Works or career adviser know anything about Baker's LPN program unless she herself was in the program or is directly the adviser for the actual program? The only person to talk to when asking question about a program is to talk to the Director of Nursing, she is the best person to know first hand. Anyone that talks down about any company is trying to steer you, and make you go with them. I have learned for myself that if you are interested in any company whether a school or whatever do the homework yourself and you decide for yourself. I don't like company's talking trash about other companies, just tell me about your company and I will find out from people who knows first hand(from previous students and instructors) what is true or not true.

But good luck in what you decide.

I to have submitted all docs. for the program and was told that the dhcc class for sept 30 is full. I was also told that the next class would be maybe Oct, possibly Nov. but for sure Jan. When ever I hope to enter. I just hate sitting around waiting. Skiddish about starting something else in the meantime because not sure on the next class. Anyhoo, I know it's a process and all I can do is wait on the process. : )

does anyone know if NWLB will cover costs of going to, say, schoolcraft's LPN program, or do you have to sign up with a program thru michigan works, like this DHCC thing?

also, are all the miworks centers in detroit? their website has been down for at least a day and doesn't look like it'll be back up anytime soon.

hey, i jus wanted to drop u a line. i start Nov.3. i am excited and would like more information. if u could. i guess i'll start cna in Jan. 09. people that are actully in the program have nothing but good things to say. which is good. the process however is grooling. can u please respond back to me a soon as you can.

How do you attend the Nursing group that you are in reference to?

I am so glad I found this thread.

I am currently a student at Michigan Works..I finished the Success class a few months ago. I was already a CNA when I started, and was a bit discouraged because initially they said everyone had to take the CNA course whether they were certified or not. Crazy.

Well, things changed midstream (the rules seem to change every other day), and my advisor told me that I did not have to retake the CNA course for their program, and that I could in fact skip the PCA too, and told me that I could test into LPN. I did not expect to test so soon, I was happy, but it was a bit unexpected. Because there were SOO many students waiting 5/6 months in between class waiting to get into a CNA or PCA class.I was really prepared to at start in like 2009/10

Well, I did not have much time to study so I got a studyguide and brushed up on my math (my weakest area), and took the test. The TEAS was not very reflective of the studyguide. Everything that I studied for was not really on the test, and I didn't do so well on the math part. I was very disappointed. I'm not the best in math but I am not THAT bad.

Overall, I was about 10 points away from passing. I thought no big deal, I'll just study a bit more and retake it. Because initially my advisor said that you can retake the TEAS if you don't get a passing score.

Well, she tells me that the rules have changed, and you can only take it ONCE. And that if I took the TEAS again, it might not even make a difference. I really didn't like how that sounded. Because I read this forum, and there have been many nursing students who took the TEAS, NET test over again, and scored much higher than the first time. There so many programs that let you take it over up to 3 times.

Later in the discussion she told me to just put my portfolio together, with my letters of recommendation, resume, achievements, and a transcript of grades that I have from a community college. And IF (because not everyone even gets an interview to go into LPN, she said that even if you have a passing score on the TEAS it's still NO guarantee that you'll get in) you get chosen to go on an interview, you can highlight your strengths and convince them to accept you.

After that, she said that if I don't get into the nursing program that I can take a PCA class, get a job, and then enroll in a community college to pursue nursing on my own. :cry::cry::cry:

I really don't know how to take this. Things don't really look too certain for me. I will still put my portfolio together, in case I do get chosen to go on an interview,but I will be going back to college in January to finish my pre-reqs for nursing. I wish I would have stayed at college and did this at the same time . I am very disappointed that I put so much faith into thinking I would make it. So much time has been wasted.

before I go, I will tell you that I spoke with another advisor up there who frankly told me and a few students that there goal is not to get you into the LPN school, but to get you a job and working. She said that is the main purpose of the program. Not surprising being that students are failing the TEAS left and right. Only 3 people passed this time around

I take it that if you are someone who makes it as far as the LPN course fine, but it's not really expected. As long as you leave there with a job, and some skills CNA, PCA then they have played their part.

Hi, i was wondering do anyone know how long it takes for the career counsler to get back with you after you take the tabe test and pass it, drug test and TB test for the Detroit Healthcare career center? and for those who are currently attending the school how is it?

You have to go down to the center, do NOT expect for them to call you because they will not. They do not pick up their phone very often. Out of all the times I called I was lucky to have the receptionist pick up ONCE. So if there is something you need to know, you better gas up your car and go down there lol That is what a lot of people are doing.

I had to go to the center to get my TABE scores, and then I had to go to the center to get my TEAS scores because my counselor did not call me like she said. In fact, she never even called me to let me know that I could test for LPN. I just so happen to be up there, and she told me. If I had been at work or somewhere else, I would have never gotten not one phone call or message

As for the program, I was told that it would take two years for the whole program, because there is a 5 month+ waiting period between each class. And after you finish each class, you have to visit the HealthCare center's computer lab 6 hours a week, until another class opens. If you don't visit 6 hours a week, then it will affect your chances of getting into the next class. The advisor's say it will look like you are not committed to the program

If you work, and cannot make it 6 hours a week you need an excuse from your employer

In the Success class, you will have an RN instructor come in and start teaching you medical terminology. You'll go over this information for a few days..then after a week you are tested on the terms and expected to get an 80% to pass

The following week, you will have First Aid training, and some RNs will come to the class and go over CPR, etc. In class you'll watch a video, practice CPR on a dummy, then be tested on basic CPR the same day.

I think there are 3 tests overall, and you need an 80% on each one to pass. It's not hard at all and typically everybody passes. Just make sure you do good because they look at your scores to determine if you will get accepted into LPN school..so they say

The third week, everybody is split up into two separate classes. You start going to the computer lab to build up your resume. The rest of the time you are just job searching, going on healthcare sites and looking for job openings...

Have you graduated from Baker LPN? If so, can you tell me about your experience. If I don't get into Clinton Twp. I will be applying for LPN and then hopefully do a bridge program. Are you working? Do you have any idea of the starting salary for LPN?

no i did not take the teas test because my cna license has not came back yet. right now im in the cna class. will this affect my chances of entering the group. do you have any helpful tips for the teas test?:hrnsmlys:
