i am new to this forum. i am a r.n. in philippines and will migrate in canada (vancouver). i haven't actually practiced my profession as a nurse in hospital setting instead as a company nurse.
actually i don't know have an idea as to what to do to become a r.n. in canada.
should i need to take up another how many years of nursing in canada?
what should i do? kindly help me please!! thanks a lot.
Hi ledzilI am guessing that if your IELTs expire before the application process is completed, you may have to retake the IELTs. Personally, I think retaking the language tests will be a relatively easy challenge compared to the other potential challenges from the CNO.
The CNO does not usually accept a Filipino BScN education as equivalent to a Canadian BScN. It can be very challenging to meet the CNO requirements for example, you may be told you need to take a bridging program. However, in order to take a bridging program, you will have to be a resident of Ontario and have the financial means to live and support yourself while you go to school.
Over the past twenty years, I have listened to many IENs tell their stories about the difficult process of becoming a RN in Canada. My perception is, that even though it has always been challenging to become an RN in Ontario, it has become more difficult since 2005 when BScN became the entry to practice standard.
I am not trying to discourage you, just trying to prepare you, because it's possible you may need more education in order to work in Ontario, the only way for you to know is to apply to the CNO and see what their response is.
good luck in your endevours

Thank you for replying to my post.
About the equivalency of Filipino BScN and Canadian BScN, is there anyone you know who did not have to take a bridging program? How about having Masteral units or Masters Degree in the Philippines, would it help in any way?
I'd like to know about the link wherein I can find articles about the change since 2005? Is it true that ALL those who wants to work in Ontario has to study their bridging program?

the filipino nurses i have met, who applied to the cno after 2004 required upgrading. i think a few posters from the phillipines have commented on this, see the threads below.
i don't know if a filipino masters degree will help in any way, you will likely have to complete the masters first and submit your documents to the cno to find out the answer. i think maybe rogue is doing this see her posts.

Hi Dune
There are jobs for nurses who are already licensed in Saskatchewan, I am not sure if there are employers who are still recrutiing internationally, I guess you will have to contact some employers to check into this.

Well.. i live here in vancouver (just migrated from the Philippines february last year, just passed the CRNE october last year and just got my license a week ago)so i know very well (based from my own experience) the process of being a nurse in BC. Here are the requirements for new immigrants to become a nurse...1. You need to pass the IELTS exam - a score of 6 for reading, writing, listening and a score of 7 on speaking.
2. Your official transcript from the school you graduated - the school must send it to crnbc itself, hand-submitted will be rejected right away.
3. Your official proof that you passed the board exams from your home country - The board of nursing from your home country (for us filipino, the PRC) must send it to crnbc. same as above, hand-submitted will be rejected right away.
4. Fill out the official paperwork - these can be found at crnbc.com under international applicants.
5. Money for the fees - no money, no processing and assessment...
If you dont have #1, then you can't move to #2.. and so on.. If you reach #5, then good for you! After a month or so, you will receive a letter from crnbc that you are eligible to take the crne. yay!
6. Money again - this one is for the CRNE fee (485), and if you wanna apply for the interim permit (you need an employer for this, and the fee is 35/mo)
7. You take the exam..
8. You passed the exam - one last obstacle is you still need to get 250 hours under the interim permit. go apply.. and work for 250 hours.
If you failed the exam... then you have to retake it again. You don't have to start at #1 all over again, you just need to pay the fees. The wait period for the next exam, i believe, is 6 months though.. so better pass it in your first take.
9. after 250 hours, you give the canadian employer reference form to your employer. employer must fill this out, and employer himself must send it to crnbc.
10. CRNBC mails you the form for the license, you pay (367/yr)... and after 10 days (or more) you get your actual license. Congratulations, you're finally a registered nurse.
As far as i know, this is the fastest way to be a nurse in bc (well if i'm wrong... feel free to correct me hehe). It's a long and very tiring journey, there are no shortcuts, the process can't be as fast as you want (due to the volume of applicants) and you need alot of patience. But it's very much worth it and to get that license is very fulfilling. Hope this info helps.

Second courser, finished MA has an edge for US IEN when applying to CNO. Bridging program is really expensive, I tell you! If you have the funds, go ahead! Before registering to one college, better check on their requirements if you qualify. There are also other posts here regarding CNO, you just have to use our search engine. It's on the upper right of this window. Just type what your looking for.
If your looking for links and articles, you can also try to use our search engine. Very useful I must say!

i am crossing my fingers right now coz i am about to finish my masters hopefully this march. i just lodged my application plus all necessary documents (e.g. course description nd syllabus) and seminars attended. hoping to get a thumbs up from them.
thanks for the information :D
hi..i have an ongoing permanent residence application under federal skilled worker.my question is while im still here in d philippines and waiting for d approval of my application can i apply for CRNE exam in ontario?thanks
Have you already received eligibility for the college and OK'd to sit CRNE? Otherwise you are not applying for the CRNE exam you are applying to be a license nurse in Canada CRNE is just the final part of the process. If you haven't started the application with the college then yes better to start now. If you have already received eligibility to sit CRNE then I would hang of registering for sitting the actual exam until you are ready to sit it and accordingly to the instructions on the website. i.e Ontario if you plan on sitting the exam in June then you have until the 22 of this month to submit payment and forms and October exam has a date of 26 July
