This is a forum for Filipino graduate nurses who wish to apply and pass the NCLEX RN.
First off, this forum is based on my experience and what I had to go through. Also, I want to start this forum because I had promised God that if I ever pass the NCLEX RN, I would try and help others do so as He helped me. Please excuse the length but I want to be detailed.
My background: I am an American citizen and all my education prior to college were in the US. I chose to go to the Philippines for nursing school because 1. I wanted to go to school far away from home and 2. it was the cheapest solution for me to get what I want. I graduated from nursing on March 2011 with a BSN. I returned to the Philippines on September 2011 to start my application process for the NCLEX RN with California BON and to review with my school for the Philippines NLE. (I applied for dual citizenship in 2007 prior to enrolling for school; I was born on American soil but my mother is a Filipino citizen) I took the Philippines NLE on December 2011 and found out that I passed on February 2012. I returned to the Philippines on April 2012 to personally claim my Philippines RN License. On May 31, 2012, I received a letter from California BON stating that I was "required to complete additional course work, both theory and clinical practice to be done concurrently." Once I found out that California wanted me to go back to school, I reapplied with my home state, Texas.
These are the steps I took to apply for the Texas NCLEX RN:
These are the steps I took to pass the NCLEX RN:
1. STUDY: I used Saunders Comprehensive Review 5th edition and read at least 2-3 units per week. Best advise..know your fundamentals of nursing. Know your lab values and normal vital signs of the different age groups.
2. STUDY SOME MORE: I signed up with Kaplan and watched all the content videos while following the E-Book (The RN Course Book). I highly suggest watching the content videos because the lecturers add some content that can be easily remembered. And if you focused on fundamentals with Saunders, focus on pharmacology with Kaplan's Course Book.
3. KAPLAN EVEN MORE: I took first the Diagnostic Test. Then QT 1,2,3 before I met up for the classroom sessions which focused on the Decision Tree. Seriously have your content done before going through the Decision Tree.
4. KAPLAN TO THE MOST: When my classroom sessions ended, I followed the 2 weeks Study Guide. This consisted of 150 questions per day after finishing the Assessment Test, QT 4, 5, 6, and 7. Yes. It was A LOT. But after I finished every exam, I went through each and every question, wrong or right and reviewed the rationale. If I wasn't satisfied with Kaplan's rationale, I went back to Saunders. Saunders is much more in depth. And honestly, my scores scared me at the beginning. I was hitting just par of what was asked for. I first started making 50s with the Q-banks and I was really worried but I kept pushing through with it. Just a week before the exam, I was in the 60s range.
5. LIPPINCOTT'S ALTERNATE FORMAT QUESTION: After I finished 90% of Kaplan's Q-bank, I switched gear to Lippincott's. I did these 2 days before the exam.
6. PRAY: I prayed every morning, every night and read "Our Daily Bread" everyday. And the night before my exam, my family and I did the rosary. Even throughout the exam, I kept praying.
7. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: Relax the night before and make sure you sleep well. Be well rested. I arrived at my testing center and hour and a half before my exam. Before I went in, I glanced over Pharma. And then I prayed. And I believed in myself. I had to. Because everyone else did.
God Bless to every one of you who is pursuing nursing as a profession. If I was vague in any of these areas, please feel free to ask.
Hi guys!
Just want to seek any advice whether if it is better to apply directly for licensure to Tx BON (I'm residing here in Tx and wanting to work here) or to apply to another state like Florida and then apply by endorsement? I graduated from Phils last 2009 and I don't have 2 years work experience, which makes me a candidate for a refresher course, I believe. So, I'm thinking if applying to another state then apply again by endorsement once licensed would it be worth it?
Any suggestion is highly appreciated.
Thanks :)

If you are trying to avoid the work requirement/refresher class unless you work for. 1-2 years in Florida you would still face the same requirement when endorsing back to Texas. Plus paid all the fees to Florida. You would not be able to get licensed in FL and next day endorse to TX without fulfilling the paid work for 2 years in last 4 years. You will be in same scenario just later in timeline
Thanks a lot for the above reply JustBeachyNurse! guess I'll just go on with my application to Tx BON then. Actually, I called them once asking if I have to take the refresher course since I graduated in 2009 and the operator said that they have to receive first my documents and review it. She didn't tell me directly that I have to take it which gives me hope. Was there any case you know of that they issued a license after passing the NCLEX who has the same situation as mine? This course just requires more costs and I don't have any work yet. *sigh*

No. TX BoN has been pretty consistent in requiring any nurse that has not practiced in the past 4 years to take a refresher course prior to licensing regardless if educated in US or overseas. Plus not practicing for more than 5 years since graduation you will have a very difficult time finding hospital employment as you are not a new grad or an experienced nurse. There is not a shortage of nurses seeking work in the US but there is a shortage of available jobs.

In my own opinion if Texas BON requires us to do FENS refresher course, it is for our own benefit. It's just 120 hours of clinical and 120 hours of theoretical classes anyway. Let it serve as an orientation as well.
Hi! :) I am also applying for Texas, I just found out today that CGFNS issued my report to TX-BON. From what I read from the original post on this thread, you have to submit your application, the fee and fingerprint card. I've only submitted the application with the fee so far. How do I go about now? It has been about 11 days but no feedback yet. Thank you in advance!
Thanks to both of you for responding my queries. This really helps me and I agree with you KLS324, it is for our own good. Do any of you know where to get this FENS refresher course or have any web links to share?
About the best I have found to deal with so far. I will see if TexasBON wants my chick to do a refresher course.

Hi Kathleen! How am i going to start? Should i go to my nursing school and prc so they can send my documents to cgfns?
Thank you!
You gonna start by reading the Texas BON website. Understand?
Next you will not be using CGNFS because it takes too long and you can't do a expidite like you can with ERES.
Texas - One of the first thing to do is to pay for the CES and Register and then take the paperwork to your school and have them DHL / LBC your transcripts directly to ERES for you Course Evalution, and then you will have to go to PRC and have them to send your VOL (Verification of License Form) that you will hand them in person and maybe see if you can have then to Expidite that also and send it to ERES.
I suggest you bring cookies or food or money and see if they can put your paperwork to the front of the line.
After that pay your $125 and Register with the Texas BON
Any questions?

1. If you plan to live and work in TX answer TX (if not a legal resident of TX you can only answer Texas as compact license does not apply to you)
2. N/A not present in US.
3 did you ever take the NCLEX? If yes, which BoN gave you authorization to test? So if you previously attempted NCLEX for CA you write CA, month/year. And if you tested multiple times you would state CA date 1, date 2, date 3.
