Taking your child to day care for the first time will be heart-wrenching. My advice is to stay strong while you say goodbye. Let them see you leave on a positive note. Also, ask the director if you could come in for 30 min or so some days in advance just to get her acclimated. Show her it's not a place for her to be scared of. Trust me I had to go through it with four children and it broke my heart every time.
For a while I took a job at the day care and it really reassured me that the teachers do care, and will keep her close the first couple of days. I would also start talking to her now about it, and let her know that she'll be going to "school" soon. If you can afford it, take her to pick out a new backpack and lunch box that you'll fill with snacks. Let her be involved in the process so that she's excited.
My biggest advice though is when you drop her off, don't linger. It just makes it worse. Walk her to her classroom, giver her hugs and kisses, and go. If she is having a terrible fit (cross our fingers she doesn't) ask for the teacher's help, and tell her goodbye one last time. You both will be fine. Good luck!

Thanks so much. I know I'm going to be heart broken when I have to leave her, but I think its time. It's not like it will be all day, just a few hours. She is mildly hyperlexic, and the dr said that going to a little school a couple hours a week will make worlds of difference.

I'm glad someone said it! I'm mean if someone you love was in a bad car accident and seriously injured, who would you rather have taking care of them? A person who didn't make good enough grades, barely passed and probably because he/she didn't work hard enough, and the only reason they got into nursing school was because of the color of their skin or gender? Or would you rather have a nurse that worked hard and knows her stuff? Nursing school doesn't see color or gender.......it see's grades. This is entirely unfair, and I'm glad someone said so. People should get accepted because they earned the right to be there, not because of their ethnicity or gender

Please do not take what I said as being discriminating. But the program is hard to get into. It should not give special treatment to those who are different. It really is not fair if someone got in just because they are a certain gender or color, but a white female, who did not miss the original cut off could not get in because she was born a female and born white. When I was in nursing school, I had a male nurse, an Asian nurse, a black nurse, etc. and there were plenty of people in my program (more than 1/4 of the people in our class) who fell under these categories without any special considerations. Oh well, what can you do? I am just glad I am graduated and don't have to witness the drama that surely will come once this program gets known.

I agree but these individuals didn't miss the cutoff by that much, my friend had 192 something! They had to have a high gpa, recommendations from teachers, and advisor and go through an interview process so it wasnt like they picked someone just because they were black or a male! Another thing there were several people in the diversitu program that got in the regular way! And when I went to orientation there weren't alot of minorities that got accepted the regular way!

Maybe it varies by class. Oh well. Good luck to you in the program! =) I hope you enjoy it, as it does go by fast!

The regular way should be the only way to get in! We should all be judged by the same criteria, and no one should expect any special treatment because of their color or gender.

I am not offended in anyway and like I said I got in the regular way and there were many in that program that got in the regular way also! The at

state gave fscj 1 million dollars to fund that program

It's not fair for the people who have high points and barely miss the cutoff if people with lower points get in the program because they're a guy or of a different race.

If I got in that way, it'd be a hollow victory. Knowing somebody deserved to be in the program instead of you, but you got in because you're a guy ruins the fun. It's like when you're playing basketball or something and the person is not trying and lets you win. I get no enjoyment or sense of pride from that because I know I didnt earn it.

Doesnt mean I'd turn down the offer if it happened...

Thats why Im hoping I get at least around a 100pts from the NAT so I can get in the fair way.

I'd be angry if somebody with lower points got in over me because of how they were born.

Thats a good point! In my IMHO, if you don't make the cutoff, then you don't make the cutoff. There should be no special entrance programs for anyone. There are dozens of white females that don't make the cutoff every semester. There are no special programs for them....If I don't make the cutoff points, thats it, I don't get a second chance. How is that fair just because I happen to be white and female? It's not!

The nursing department at FSCJ doesn't give a care what color or gender we are. They see our grades and that is it.

Its just like scholarships that have a certain criteria, it may not seem fair but thats life! There's scholarships based on religion, race, economic situations so are they unfair too? Besides the diversity program is pretty much SEPARATE from the regular nursing students ans program they stay together in the same classes the ENTIRE program, so its not like u will be sitting in a class with someone who got in through that program!

It's the same thing for the preferred counties requirements though. I live in Clay county and if my points were not high enough I wouldn't have gotten in. They would have accepted someone with lower scores, just because they lived in Duval county. There are always exceptions, and even though the people from the diversity didn't get into the program the same way, they have to get out the same way. The standards may have been lowered (slightly) for them to get in, but they will be upheld to the same standards that we are during school, and they have to take the same test we do at the end.

Another thing there were several individuals who were considered typical nurses (white female) who didn't make the cutoff but when someone declined their seats they were offered a seat even though their points were below the cutoff! So would that be considered unfair too? I am sure they worked just as hard as the individuals who got accepted into a SEPARATE part of the nursing program! :)

Totally agree with this statement!!! No matter how you got into the program you have the same standards and expectations as everyone else! They got on differently but they won't get out differently!!!
