Farmingdale State College

U.S.A. New York

Published

Hi guys. I'm new to posting but I've been a long time lurker. I just wanted to know if anyone is in or is planning to attend Farmingdale State College. I want to go there but I want to know some more information about it. What are the pre-reqs for the LPN program? What is the lowest composite score that they look at? All other schools tell you this but I can't find that info anywhere on Farmingdale's website. I'm currently studying for the exam (even though I have NO IDEA when the next PAX-PN test is being given in NY). I got a B in Psych and also a B is English. I have to re-take A&P1 in the Fall because I didn't do so well in it. I'm trying my hardest to get an A in it so that they'll at least consider me for the program. I'm sorry for the long post but I'm just panicking because I have no clue what I'm really doing lol. I'd love if anyone/everyone could help me out. What other pre-reqs do I need for the PN program? Is it really hard to get into? I'm pretty much freaking out about....EVERYTHING:banghead:. I just don't feel like I'm doing enough. Seriously, do you all think I have a good shot at getting in with the grades I stated above?

Kuklara, another good tip in A&P 2 my professor would go to each lab table and go through all the models and he would let us video tape... we then posted them on youtube for other students to look at! if you look on youtube my name is sprocida, I have a few videos up there too!

Neeniebean, do you know what hospitals Farmingdale works with? I live in Deer Park but I travel a lot between Nassau County and where I live.. I'd be comfortable with somewhere inbetween but will really take whatever I can get!

They probably change a bit year to year (the school has to bid and then its based on availability), but off the top of my head, there was NUMC, Winthrop, New Island, St. Catherine's, Good Sam, Southside, and i think Mercy (that was just for Saturdays though). There may be more but that's all i can think of right now. I loved Winthrop. I wasn't a fan of NUMC, but you definitely get exposed to alot and you get thicker skin b/c of it lol Psych rotations (which aren't until your second year, and are only for part of the semester) are at NUMC and Syosset- I'm not sure where they do them in Suffolk. Good luck! If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!

Hey Neeniebean,

The only pre-req I still have is Micro to take. I was hoping to take it over the summer but wanted the first half of the summer and can't get the class I need ALSO I really need insurance so in order to have 12 credits I would have to take the nursing classes and Micro together in the fall. Is it REALLY hard to take Micro and Nursing classes together? Am I setting myself up for failure? ://

It seems most full time students take Micro in the second semester of Nursing (according to the course description chart I saw online). First semester is 108 concepts I and 100 (and ENG 102+child development which you probably have already). Second semester is Concepts II and Micro (+Sociology and an elective which you probably have a ton of from your Associates). WHy dont you wait and take it with concepts II? It seems thats what most people do bc there is only 1 Nur course that semester. I too will try to take either Micro or Physiological Chem in the summer 2010. Im taking A+P II this summer with the greatest professor ever or else I would tackle Micro then. I still need to take SPE 201 Oral communications. I already had SPE 130 Public Speaking but I dont think they will accept that for Oral Comm. Did you get a transfer credit report or anything? I dont know that credits they are taking from NYIT. I can only assume.

OLDCATLADY.. when you log on to your student account from Farmingale, what program does it say your in. Mine still reads Health Sciences, Nursing.....not just Nursing.

Bella,

For my curriculum it says that the firs nursing course, child development, something else I forgot and Micro are for the first semester (for transfer students) My parents are just bugging about me not being a full time student and insurance and everything. As it is right now I don't have insurance as of today, because I wasn't a full time student this semester. I just don't want to overwhelm myself the first semester you know? And I just checked on Farmingdale's website and it says "Program: AS-Nursing"

OLDCAT! The last CPR course given is this month at the American Heart Association. They dont have another until after September. Its given in Copaigue. Go to this site to check I think its or www.longislandCPR.com or www.americanheartassociation.org, or google it Long Island Cpr. I signed up for one on a sunday.

Hey Bella thanks a lot!

I registered for the April 19th class at 5:00pm.

oooh Ill meet ya there lol!!!!!:D

NEENIEBEAN! Is there a high demand for the late clinics (530-Midnight)? I see there are only 10 spots and I really need to go that time. Is registration at the orientation first come first serve or a lottery?

Honestly, i wouldn't have taken it at the same time as the nursing courses. I took it the summer before i started NS, though i also worked while i was in nursing school. I know a few people that took it while taking nursing classes and it was such an extra burden. I mean, if you have to do it, you have to do it, but if you can avoid it, i would. I took a communications course during one of the semesters and it wasnt bad at all (more time consuming but not intensive or anything). If there's any BS courses like that that you can take, i would do that to keep your full time status instead of a course like Micro. Also, take that program outline thing that bella was talking about with a grain of salt. Most people that i knew took micro before they start the program, not with the other nursing course. You know yourself and what you can handle though. Some people had small children, worked f/t, and other obligations- and still took all those courses together. It's possible, but you have to decide if it works for YOU.

After your first semester you'll have a better feel for what you can handle on your plate. My advisor tried to talk me out of taking phys chem, pharmacology and nursing seminar together in the same summer. She was really pushy about it, but i went ahead with it anyway (knowing myself and my schedule) and got a 4.0 that semester. You know yourself better than anyone!

There's usually 10 spots for each clinical location, not just 10 spots altogether. So, if you need that time slot, you may need to be more flexible about the clinical location (like for nassau county, there's usually NUMC, Winthrop or New island... though it changes semester to semseter). I don't know about the demand for that spot- it all depends on the students that semester and what their schedule allows for. Registration at orientation is first come first serve, and there's also a few different orientation groups. If you're in April, then i'm assuming your in the first group, so your chances of getting the spot that you want are really good. I never had a problem getting the time/location that i wanted, but i registered as soon as i possibly could everytime! Even on orientation day, i went there knowing what spot i wanted- looked it up online beforehand- and filled out the paper as fast as i could (Everyone in the orientation group was given the booklet and paper to choose your courses, then you had to bring it up to the secretary to have it 'officially' entered). I filled it out as fast as i could and ran upstairs with the paper- the classes definitely fill up pretty fast!

ETA- clinicals were offered at a different time when i did them. The evening ones were 3-11pm, not 5:30-12am. I guess they changed that a little. Probably b/c people theyre trying to accomodate people that work f/t more.
