Examples of (patient's) family conflicts that have affected your work as a nurse?

I personally have not had to deal with it too much as I work third shift but I have a few examples for you.

There was one family member who said well we don't want so and so to see dad (when the so and so is a close relative to the dad). Or there was one family member that would say well we don't want (the residents) ex-wife to know anything. I think it makes it so hard when families have conflict and decide you to be the mediator because they cannot get along. A lot of it is usually childish too.

The focus should be on the patient and what they want, but sadly, especially in LTC what the actual patient wants doesn't matter it is what the family members want. example "Mom doesn't need to be on lasix" even though moms feet are +4 pitting, or "Dad has to have pain medicine around the clock!" Even though dad has never shown any s/s of pain and refuses the pain medicine the majority of the time. Sorry to digress, but it is just sad how some families behave.

She would plead for me to help her help him understand she had to leave. It hurt me so badly to see things this way.

We had a resident whose daughter would come when her money from Uncle Sam came. Would take her out, make her cash her checks, take the money and then drop her off. Resident was always crying and depressed.

A couple of us (CNA's) reported this to APS who came and basically put a restraining order on the daughter.

The facility made us (the male CNA's) physically stop these people from coming in until police could arrive. Ended up in a big fight one day with a couple of CNAs being attacked by the BF. Luckily for us we were in a small town and the small town cops (who we all knew) came and did a nice job of putting them in their place and then arresting them.
