Family Presence
I am working on a white paper to promote family presence in healthcare settings. As one of the dimensions of patient- and family-centered care, many organizations still struggle with understanding a few things: 1) why is it important to include families 2) what can famililes be involved in - both at the bedside and at the 'system' level 3) HOW to get them involved These are some topics I want to explore, but I want to hear from others what's being done out there. Many thanks!

Family Presence
i'm interested in hearing how hospitals and other healthcare organizations promote family presence. 1. how does your organization keep patients' families present at an organization/system level (e.g participation in creating policies, procedures, design) 2. how does your organization keep patients' families present at the patient-care level (i.e. bedside, during appointments, in ed)? 3. describe how your organization has used some of the following best practices to include patients' families to provide patient-centered care: - patient advisory councils - caregiver classes - family participation in rounding &/or charting - other examples 4. what is the area of greatest need for involving patients' families at your organization?

Family Conflicts
Examples of (patient's) family conflicts that have affected your work as a nurse? How did you handle the situation?

Moral Dilemmas
Wow! Excellent discussions about moral dilemmas. Thank you to everyone who dug deep and reflected on their own beliefs and interactions with others. Next questions about this: How does your organization/unit/peers support you when these delimmas arise? What do you recommend are "best practices" for dealing with the cognitive disonance? What have you done in the past that worked/did not?

Moral Dilemmas
One example might be an OB nurse who does not agree with GLBT lifestyle but has a lesbian couple who are going to have a baby. I am a writer and wanted to get some ideas of what nurses thought about the subject and get a dialoge going... what are your thoughts?

Moral Dilemmas
when a patient presents with something that is in conflict with your own moral code, how do you best handle the situation and meet your professional obligation to care for the patient?

Patient-Centered Care
:welcome: I wanted to open a discussion about Patient-Centered Care. What things are you doing at your hospital / unit that you consider innovative in promoting patient-centered care?

looking for ideas on coordinating care
All - I keep hearing complaints from patients that they have to keep telling their story (chief complaint) over and over again. We have to ask, so I'm wondering if there are ways out that that your EDs have managed to communicate chief complant among staff without having electronic medical records. Love to hear your suggestions.
