This happened on new year night in our unit. A case of peri asphyxia hypotonic hypoactive babe was placed on the seca scale for weighing after sponge. the nurse applied oil on her during bath. the babe kicked his leg and slided off from the scale on to the floor. the babe had no external injury. xrays , head uss ,cbc bga, and ct normal. incidental report was completed. now Idont know what will be the further proceedings? Did anybody faced this situation?
Two times in my 13 years I have heard of stories like this- once a baby hit the floor while being weighed another time a teeny one wiggled out of an open port hole and was literally hanging by his leads!(You know, the ones that will never stay on!) Thank goodness they stuck this time! We called him the "bungie baby" after that! Both kids were ok.
Anyway, both were good nurses who made mistakes and both were devistated by their mistakes. I guess you never know- I try not to be too judgmental.
I have had parents ask me before if we have ever dropped a baby! According to the old-timers, it has never happene don our unit. But one nurse said that in her early years at another hospital, a baby fell out the porthole. I have definitely been scared of that before when I have lifted the isolette cover to find a crazy preemie plastered against the window saying "hello!"
Have seen this happen once in over 20 yrs. Agree with previous post. It is the worst sound you can imagine. That baby wasn't so lucky and the nurse (who was a really good nurse, actually) quit nursing entirely. The baby somehow grabbed the side of the scale and flipped himself off. Lesson: always have at least one hand on the baby, never think "oh, this kid can't fall off", and NOTHING is more important than keeping the kid safe (not even cleaning up poop!).

We had a bigger chronic kid fall out of a crib...the mom left the side down and went to the sink and before the nurse in the room could get over there he hit the floor. It was awful. Luckily, he didn't have any injuries, how I have no idea.
We have families that oil up AA babies all the time. Baby lotion has alcohol in it and dries out their skin as AA babies do have unique skin care when they are a bit older. We discourage it, but they still do it.
