Fall 2010 nursing program @ BMCC

Published

Hello I'm wondering if anyone is applying for the Fall 2010 nursing program @ BMCC. I was able to change my curriculum to "NUR-PCN" and was wondering what comes next. Thanks

Hi guys. I hope someone could answer some of my question since I am planning to transfer to BMCC this coming fall.

I'm transferring from another CUNY college. I have finished all the pre-reqs but unfortunately I got Bs on A&P1 and Gen. Psych. I know these 2 are really important that's why I am going to retake both this fall when I transfer there.

Does the nursing program in BMCC look at the whole grades or just the key courses? (eng1 psy1 a&p1 mat102)

I am asking this question because I got 2 Cs on A&P2 and micro bio. Should I even bother retaking these or they're good enough for me to get in the program?

What's the difference between the morning and evening classes when it comes to pre-reqs? I know that you need to finish all the pre-reqs to get in the evening class. But, do they look at the whole grade (including the ENG102, A&P2, etc) for the evening class or just the 4 key courses?

Thank you guys! I really need your help since the BMCC website is really complicated and does not answer all these question. TYTY :redpinkhe

Hi NYSstudent,

The 4 courses that determine your Pre-clinical Index GPA are: Bio425, Eng101, Psy100, & Mat104, these courses you need to pull all A's if possible to be considered to apply for the nursing program. If you are retaking Bio425 and Psy100, I'm assuming you have A's on the other 2 courses. If that's so then you need to attempt to get both A's on the courses you are retaking to apply. Once you are in the nursing program, you need to maintain a 2.5GPA. If you intend on applying for the evening program, you must have Bio425,426,420, Psy100, Mat104, Eng101, Psy220 or Soc100 pre-reqs completed before you can apply. Spe 100 and Eng 201 can be taken during your clinical phase. As far as I'm concerned BMCC requires Che118 or 221 as pre-req for A&P or if you transfered a Chem course you can use it as your Gen Elective credits. If you want to apply for the day program only the 4 main courses is all you need, but of course with a GPA of 3.77 or higher on those 4 courses. Although if I'm not mistaken the Spring 10 semester's GPA cutoff was 3.86 daytime and 3.77 evening. It's to your discretion if you want to retake the other courses for a higher GPA, but technically you don't have to unless you have grades lower than a "C". If your pre-clinical Index GPA is high enough you're able to apply. Hope this helps, as this is how I understand it.

Good luck,

Bilis

Thank you so much for the response.

Actually I've taken all the pre-requisites for the nursing program. (Dev. Psych, MicroBio, A&P2, Socio, SPE100, ENG201, CHE118 etc.)The only thing that's missing are the nursing courses/clinicals. I have tried to apply to private colleges around NYC but couldn't afford the tuition. If ever I decided to apply this fall in BMCC, I would definitely retake ENG101 and PSYCH1, and MAT104 too. (I already got A on my A&P1.)

Do you think it's advisable to take these 3 together? I've heard problems about students missing a semester because their major is liberal arts and couldn't apply to the nursing program. I'm not sure if I understand it right.

Can I apply to the program while taking the 3 key-courses or do I need to wait till the end of the semester?

One last thing, how are the clinical professors in BMCC? How are the nursing students? I hope there's no drama. I'll be working as a part-time Nurse Tech while going to school. Would that be an advantage for me during clinicals? I've been studying my butt off trying to get in a program but it's really hard (and I know it's going to get harder but I am ready!)

Sorry if I got too many questions. I just really need to ask a BMCC student about this since counselors don't help me much /seriously/. TYTY:redbeathe:redbeathe:redbeathe

Unfortunately I'm one of those liberal arts students that can't enter the program right away. What I can recommend if you're going to transfer to BMCC is to make sure you'll be transferring as a Pre-clinical nursing major, if counselors suggested otherwise, ignore their suggestions.

Taking English1, Mat104 and Psych1 is doable but I'm not sure if you'll be able to enter the Fall 2010 program as 1)there are limited number of credits that can be taken during summer, and 2) it will already be too late for you to apply as they start evaluating students for the fall program between March 22 and May 6. Take one subject during summer and two in the fall, that way you can still enter the Spring 2011 program.

You might want to check another thread for BMCC clinical professors as I have no idea what's going on in that department.

Hope this helps. Goodluck!

Hi NYSstudent,

I would have to agree w/ D., and may even add that if you are able to take those 3 courses before the Fall'10 is over you will be able to apply for the nursing program in the Fall 11 because since the courses you are retaking are the Pre-Clinical Index courses, the GPA needs to be calculated (grades must be posted) in order to change your curriculum to NUR-PCN, and finally apply shortly after your curriculum is changed (month later) for the following semester. (Eq: If you finished Eng, Mat, Psy Fall 10 (Dec'10), you would change your curriculum Feb'11 then you're able to apply Mar'11-May'11 for the Fall'11.) I think unless you're able to complete those 3 courses during the summer, change your curriculum and apply for the Spring'11 program during the Fall'10 semester, you will lose a semester. That's what happened to me. I was retaking 2 courses (PCI courses), finished Fall 09 wanted to apply for Spring 10 was not able to apply because the positions had been filled during the Fall 09 semester. Now I'm waiting to apply for the Fall'10 in March.

Best of Luck,

Bilis

Thanks again for the informative responses. I went to BMCC earlier today and asked if I could take one key-course this summer. And they said it's possible (even though my application is for the fall). BTW. The campus is nice even though I almost got lost getting there.

hm that sucks. I cannot wait another year to apply for the program. 2011 is 1 year til the end of the world 2012! J/k but seriously I'm not getting any younger! I'm 22 :( I badly need to finish school - I would trade my kidney if I have too. That's how desperate I am now. LOL!;)

Is there a solution to prevent this disaster (getting delayed) from happening? What if I declare my major as Pre-clinical student before entering bmcc. I'll be taking ENG101 this summer. and Gen.Psych and MAT104 this fall.

I'm still wondering if it's possible for me to apply to the program even though I'm still taking the some key-courses? I asked them the deadline to apply for the spring semester and they said it's November 11. Apparently, grades aren't up til December. sigh sigh. Regardless - still hoping to get in the spring '11.:crying2::crying2:

Thanks again Bilis:redbeathe and ddeguzman2:redbeathe

Hey NYSstudent,

I would consider seeing the nursing coordinator to find out exactly the timelines to apply to the program. As far as declaring your major as Pre-nursing, I wouldn't know. All I know is that you must have completed the 4 pre-clinical courses to even be considered to apply. Oh, and by the way, you're still a young lad. Don't give up and work hard that the time goes by fast, before you know it you'll be graduating:grad:.

Best of luck,

Bilis

Ahh to be 22 again :). Bilis is right that you should talk to the pre-clinical nursing coordinator (he's on the 7th floor) so you'll know if you'll be able to get into the Spring 2011 program or not. I have classmates who were able to enroll for the first time at BMCC declared as pre-nursing major before even taking the four preclinical subjects so I think you should be able to do that too (unless they changed the rules again). If you're able to do that, I don't see why you can't enter the Spring 2011 program as long as you're able to finish all pre-clinical requisites (with an A) by Fall.

@ Dee,

Hello hope all is well. So I called the nursing department and the girl informed me that I needed to sign up to get advised and luckily I was able to go on Saturday (didn't have to miss a day of work to do that). With that said, the girl at the counter asked if I was a Pre-clinical student and what program I was signing onto (eve/wknd), she handed me the book and I signed in for an appt. Now I guess I will recieve a phone call to confirm or just show up on that day and time. The appts for the eve/wkn program where all scheduled during evening hours (makes sence), but now I have to find a babysitter for my son. Anyway, I'll keep you posted you may want to know how the process is. I will now be a nervous reck 'til we get news on acceptance. :uhoh3:

Take care,

Bilis

Hi Bilis,

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! I heard from other students that they require proof that you are working if you want to get into the evening/weekend program, so maybe you should take a photocopy of your pay stub just in case he asks. Good luck and thanks for letting me know how the process works!

Best Regards,

Dee

Hi Dee,

Thanks for the response, you're all drenched in information (gotta be prepared, right?) You know, I wouldn't of thought of that (proof of employment), and again with my luck I would have to make an additional trip with all these requirements at hand. I've also read other posts and would proof of citizenship be a requirement also? Not that it's a problem, but I guess you need to carry some sort of proof right? Thanks again for the encouragement, I hope to get in.

Best regards,

Bilis

Hey All, i am new to the thought of BMCC and need help. I have a BA with about a 2.7 gpa from an ivy league school. I have a 3.5 in micro-anat... I has C's in all psych courses I took. I have been applying to BSN programs and have been rejected to two so far. I am still waiting on 6 more schools however. Anyway I wanted someone to explain to me the application process at bmcc. I think this would be a much better school for me. how long is the program if you have prereqs? I would like to apply for the fall or summer? I would like to start as soon as possible bc i need a job. How is job placement after bmcc does anyone know? how long is the program ? and will it be less time for me since I have prereqs? or does everyone need them in order to start.

I bet its very competative-but do people go into the program as they are working from their associates or r there BA gpas out there that are 3.9 and will knock my BA 2.6 down? I am hoping they consider that i had a very tough time at my school and in 4 years I was able to get a 2.6 out of this. i will call the office for info-but I went online to look up all this info and i dont find it on their page.. please direct me with some deadlines. requirements , how to apply and all that good stuff!! thanks and good luck to those applying and those in...ahh how much is the program? and how many people are accepted into each cohort? thanks

I just finished my prereqs Fall 09. I was retaking AP1 & Psy100 because I had them removed to better my chances. I'm a transfer student from El Paso, TX. I'm wondering why you weren't able to change you're curriculum to PCN if you have all the 4 prereqs specified.

hey, how can u remove grades from transcripts? and what does PCN mean?
