Fall 2010 nursing program @ BMCC

Published

Hello I'm wondering if anyone is applying for the Fall 2010 nursing program @ BMCC. I was able to change my curriculum to "NUR-PCN" and was wondering what comes next. Thanks

For those applying to the program-do u guys have degrees in other fields? or did some of u go straight to BMCC after college? working towards an? associates?

Hey All, i am new to the thought of BMCC and need help. I have a BA with about a 2.7 gpa from an ivy league school. I have a 3.5 in micro-anat... I has C's in all psych courses I took. I have been applying to BSN programs and have been rejected to two so far. I am still waiting on 6 more schools however. Anyway I wanted someone to explain to me the application process at bmcc. I think this would be a much better school for me. how long is the program if you have prereqs? I would like to apply for the fall or summer? I would like to start as soon as possible bc i need a job. How is job placement after bmcc does anyone know? how long is the program ? and will it be less time for me since I have prereqs? or does everyone need them in order to start.

I bet its very competative-but do people go into the program as they are working from their associates or r there BA gpas out there that are 3.9 and will knock my BA 2.6 down? I am hoping they consider that i had a very tough time at my school and in 4 years I was able to get a 2.6 out of this. i will call the office for info-but I went online to look up all this info and i dont find it on their page.. please direct me with some deadlines. requirements , how to apply and all that good stuff!! thanks and good luck to those applying and those in...ahh how much is the program? and how many people are accepted into each cohort? thanks

Definitely a lot of questions here but I'll try to answer some of them. First of all, the BMCC nursing dep't doesn't really care about your past GPAs or what kind of degree you have before as long as you you are able to meet their pre-clinical nursing (PCN) requirements. If you are aiming for their morning program (you mostly have to be a full-time student for this), then you only need to finish 4 PCNs: Eng101, Mat104 (Math for Health Science), General Psych, and AP1. You do need to have all A's for these four subject for a guaranteed entrance to the morning program. The current PCN GPA they are accepting is around 3.8.

If you are aiming for their evening/weekend program so you can still work (like what I am doing), you need to finish the 4 PCNs I mentioned + Eng201, AP2, Micro, Dev't Psych. They will take the GPA for all those subjects and the current minimum GPA they accept is 3.7. Of course these GPAs vary from semester to semester depending on those who apply. For Fall '10, they will only accept about 90 students for morning and 45 in the evening.

If you have Cs or even Bs in any of these PCNs, it is advisable for you to ask the entrance coordinator to not credit those subjects and re-take them instead at BMCC. If you already achieved any of these prereqs with As, then apply as a transfer student and tell them you want to be in the prenursing department. But I do believe you need to be matriculated for one semester first before you can apply for the morning/evening program. They are already evaluating students for the Fall 2010 so it might be too late for you for that semester.

As far as how the program goes, I don't have answer for that as I am not yet in nor do I know how the job prospects for BMCC nursing students but I'm sure there are other posts that talk about those. The clinicals, both morning and evening, will take 2.5 years as they offer 5 sequential clinical subjects, one for each semester. They don't offer clinicals during summer.

I believe BMCC accepts applications all the time but if you want to get into the Spring nursing program, my advice is to apply now and then get evaluated by the preclinical nursing advisor (7th floor. M. Sierra).

For tuition fees, I believe right now it's about $185/credit. One clinical subject is about 8-12 credits. I'm paying a total of $2,600 for Dev't Psych (3 credits) and Micro (4 credits)that I'm taking right now (incl. fees).

And for your last question, yes, I do have a Bachelor's degree. Most of my classmates right now have Bachelor degrees themselves.

Hope all these help.

I thank you for giving me all this wonderful information. This was so detailed and I hope it could help others like it has helped me. So I actually have all the requirements need for either the day program and the evening program. I never took english 101 or anything like that because my school gave seminars and first year english rather than classes like those. What is really annoying is that I don not have As in any of these classes because like I think I mentioned above the level of these courses at my university were really hard. I took some courses at a Community College and the difference is tremendous-I am talking one school told me study 1-20 chaps and test in 2 days while at the local county college they give u the answers and 20 extra credit points for other things like donating blood. I think the system is really really unfair. This is very depressing to me because wish the other experiences would count in applying rather than getting all As in these courses. If you work hard you may be able to achieve an A, but sometimes things happen and not all of us can get As in these prereqs.

I was hoping to start in the FALL. Did the application deadline pass? or can I still apply? When is it due? Since you have a Bachelors why did you not look into a BSN rather than an associates in nursing? I did apply to a whole bunch of bsn schools and I am still waiting. However, as I said gpa is too low and I fear I may not get in to a convenient school. Asumming I had all As in the the pre reqs-would the program be shorter for me? Or because of the duration of clinicals-will the program still take 2.5 years? Sorry for all the questions-but I really appreciate your time!

also if I apply to be a prenursing student like you said..would I actually be taking class working towards the nursing degree? I really dont want to take all the prereqs to get As. thats just crazy! I have Bs and C in psych.. I know...its very disappointing..

Hi Aspiring Nurse,

I'm sure there are other nursing schools out there that will look at your available prereqs and have your GPAs accepted. I was originally planning for a BSN at Hunter College but they don't have evenings/weekends program and I need to work full time. BMCC is my only "cheap" choice w/ evening/weekend program as I need to study within the Manhattan area where I work. Once I get my RN, I'm hoping to take the RN-Masters route.

I don't really know what's the deadline for Fall application as I've mentioned that the nursing department is already starting to make appointments for those who want to get into the program for Fall 2010. I believe their last day for evaluation is May 6.

As for your last question, the clinicals is in sequence and therefore cannot be taken at the same time. Even if you've already finished all prereqs you still have to take the clinicals each semester. So yes, it will take 5 semesters to finish all of them (Spring and Fall).

thanks again. Did u look at beth israel? they have an evening program..ahh I see.. It may not be cheap. ok well good luck! I will let you know what I decide. I applied to nyu, I wish I get in. I also applied to Felician in NJ. -

Wondering if anyone could help me.... I'm considering about applying to BMCC and I have all of the classes minus the MAT class so I'd need that. I'm interested in the evening program but am worried about my GPA, for the 3 classes I do have I have an A- in AP1, B+ in ENG and Psy.... if I do decent in the Math class which would be the last class I need for pre-req's do I even have a chance?

Thanks!

Hi ddeguzman2,

Thanks for all of the information in your post before but I have a few more questions for you. Are you in the clinical portion of the program at BMCC?

I've just registered for courses over the summer and fall for pre-requisites to transfer for applications in Accelerated BSN programs around the city in the beginning of 2011 but of course I'm reconsidering taking the courses at BMCC and applying for their program for ASN as it would be much cheaper.

I'm not doubting your choice but trying to see why people chose different routes. I have a serious issue with cost so I'm also considering this.

I also have a BA already and have looked into accelerated programs at Pace, NYU, LIU and Suny Downstate but I'm wondering why you wanted to stay at BMCC to get your ASN if you already have your BA? I've been wondering if doing this is better than going for the BSN since it would be cheaper in the end but it seems like the time it would take to get the degree would take longer.

Also, considering the waiting list time at BMCC get into the clinical portion ... I didn't know if I wanted to take the chance with CC's. Were you established as a pre-clinical major while originally registering at BMCC. They aren't allowing transfers to immediately be in the pre-nursing major so I'm thinking this might be a problem! They are asking everyone to be in the Liberal Arts general major. It looked like this might be a huge problem down the road.

Thanks for any info. you have on the process!

Thx.

Hi Doni,

I am not yet in the clinical program. I am finishing up my prereqs and will apply for Spring 2011 clinicals soon. The problem with BMCC (and any other CUNY school for that matter) is that they keep changing the rules. When I applied at BMCC last year Spring, I had the option to get into the prenursing dep't but was unable to because they lost my transcript and so they placed me in the Liberal Arts dep't instead if I want to start attending classes right away instead of waiting for another semester.

I guess they changed that rule now based on what you said about transfer students being immediately placed as Liberal Arts student. BMCC accepts clinical nursing applicants during March- May for Fall semester, and October for Spring semester. Fall 2010 semester application is now closed so my chance is to apply for Spring 2011. At first I thought I need to change my status to prenursing in June before applying for the clinicals in October. I was wrong. I just heard today from the prenursing coordinator that I can apply straight as liberal arts student to the nursing program in October --- they changed the rule again.

Of course, I don't believe him so I'm going to come back in June just in case.

As for your other question, my long term goal is get my Masters as Nurse Practitioner. There are schools such as Columbia who offer accelerated RN to Masters if you already have any bachelor's degree. This is the cheapest route for me. Once I get my RN via ASN, then I can work part time and study full time to get my Masters.

I hope these answer your questions.

Best Regards,

Dee

Hi,

I don't want to dash your hopes but chances are slim if you have B+ for both English and Psych even if you can get A on Mat104. As I've previously mentioned, the morning program (for Fall 2010) only accepts 50 students total, and 30 students for the evening program. That's against more than 300 students applying for the semester. If you think you can get As in English and Psych, then you have the option to retake them, otherwise, you might want to look for other schools.

It's just my opinion and you should go to the prenursing coordinator at 7th Floor to verify that.

Best Regards,

Dee

Hi Dee,

I think I have a situation similar to yours with the transcript situation since I wanted to register for classes right away for summer. When registering they weren't sure about my status and placing people into pre-clinical (or pre-req classes) in the pre clinical nursing department so they put me into another major while I was standing there!

I had heard how quickly the classes filled up and didn't care and wanted to be able to register right away, but now I'm thinking this is going to be harder to get into the correct program. I'll find out over the next few weeks...

The only reason I hesitated toward an ASN is the job requirements in the city regarding ASN vs. BSN. I'm sure there's jobs for both but of course everyone has gone through a million forums about this subject. I'm going to take a few classes at BMCC and see how it goes.

Thanks for all your info. and plans for the future. Best of luck to you!

:)
