Change of Career- BMCC non matric
Hi -- There are many here especially those now in the evening nursing program who were in the same boat as you. I just finished the third semester in the BMCC nursing program and one of my classmates also had a law degree. I am sure you will do very well especially if you were able to finish pre-law. I am in the evening program and had the same dilemma as you. I wasn't able to take any other school as BMCC is the only one offering evening courses. My plan is to finish my associate degree in nursing, get my license and apply for Masters degree via RN-Masters bridge program online since I already had my bachelor's degree as well in another field. The woman you spoke to actually made sense when she said that it might be better for you to get a BSN instead since ADN grads these days are now having a very difficult time finding a job as hospitals prefer those with BSN degree unless you know somebody who can help you get hired. I would have suggested this as well if you have the option to do so. As for your questions on credit courses, you might want to check what ever you need to know in this link: Nursing It will take about 30 prereq credits (BIO425, BIO426, Mat104, Eng101, Eng201, Psy100, Psy240 or SOC100, BIO420, and Speech) plus a 2-credit elective and then the major nursing subjects to be able to finish a 65-credit AAS RN degree. As you already know, ChE121 is a prereq for BIO425 (also known as AP1). Mat104, you can only take at BMCC but the rest, you can have them transferred. For the evening program, you have to finish all prereqs except Speech and the elective to be able to apply to the program. Of course these days, you also have to take the HESI exam. You must have As with at least one A- in the first four prereqs BIO425, Mat104, Eng101, Psy100 to guarantee a spot. I don't know how they calculate the acceptance cutoff between your overall GPA and the HESI exam. You might want to check this board about HESI cutoffs last fall. https://allnurses.com/ny-nursing-programs/bmcc-fall-2011-a-570881.html By the way, being a non-matriculated student takes away your edge to get first dibs in classes offered at BMCC. APs and Micro are especially quick to fill-up and if you're matriculated, you usually get notices right away to enroll via Panther (a BMCC online registration). If you can take these courses elsewhere and transfer it to BMCC, then that will work out. I hope these answer your questions. Good luck! Best Regards, Dee

BMCC Fall 2011 Applicants - HESI A2
hi maria, sorry for the late response. we just had our finals last saturday so there had been no time for anything else (as you will soon find out when you get to the nursing program). taking ap1 in summer is definitely intense and nerve-wracking as this is a critical subject and you must have an a or you might not have a chance to get into the nursing program. just work hard as the others said and make sure you'll get an a. this is all about memorization so if you're good at this, you'll be fine. flash cards for me helped a lot. best of luck! best regards, dee

BMCC Fall 2011 Applicants - HESI A2
Hello future Nur112 (am and pm), I've been monitoring this board and been getting updates on the new acceptance system here at BMCC. Very interesting... I'm now entering my third semester (peds and med-surg) in the evening class and just wanted to inform those who have FB accounts to search BMCC Nursing and join our open group so that most of your questions will be answered by those who are already in the program. As for books, my advice is to buy the main Fundamentals Book, Reviews and Rationales, and Drug Guide. If you can add Clinical Nursing skills book and Pharmacology memory notecards (this one helped me), that's good but you can always study the nursing skills via YouTube, google it or even borrow it from the library or the nursing lab. Of course, the choice of books will also depend on your professor. My evening class professor mostly used just the Fundamentals Book. Fluids and electrolytes and Med-surg you will probably need more on the third sem (I sure haven't opened those books yets!). Mosby's Dictionary is only for reference and you can always google everything out there. Unfortunately, I can't sell my fundamentals as I only borrowed those from somebody else but feel free to contact me again when you stepped on the second sem =). Good luck and see you around on the 7th floor. Best Regards, Doris

Question about BMCC Admissions
Just go ask your questions directly to the nursing academic advisor on the 7th floor. I can't say the name on this board but you can find his office on S-759.

Question about BMCC Admissions
I heard though that it is a little different grading system starting this fall. You guys now have to take the HESI exam and from this discussion board link, somebody said the HESI is 70% of the acceptance grade and the GPA is 30%.

Question about BMCC Admissions
They calculate the prereq GPA only. If you're planning for the day program, that will only be the four prereqs (Eng101, Mat104, Psy100, AP1) needed but if you're planning for the evening program then that will include all prereqs. Here is the FAQ on BMCC nursing program:

Is anyone in BMCC?
IMHO, if you think you can pass the lecture class, then it might be good to utilize the knowledge of your clinical professor instead (if you have a good relationship with him/her). Try to ask a lot of questions from your clinical professor. The clinical environment is the best way to get a good foundation for nursing 112. Everything else, you can mostly get from reading the book. FYI, I'm on my second sem in the nursing program at BMCC.

BMCC requirements?
Hi, I'm on my second semester in the BMCC nursing program and I know how tough it is to get in. The admission folks are sometimes clueless when it comes to the nursing program as the nursing department does not usually share information to them (which is not very nice). What I can suggest is to let admissions know that you don't want to transfer your psychology grade and will instead retake this subject here at BMCC. You definitely need to get an A on the first 4 prereqs and transferring a B will automatically take you out of the running. Your overall GPA from another school does not matter when it comes to nursing at BMCC. What matters is your overall prereq GPA which needs to be between at least 3.8-4.0, and that you pass the Hesi exam (my batch was the last one not having to take the Hesi exam). Hope this helps. Good luck! Best Regards, Dee

BMCC Fall 2011 Applicants - HESI A2
Hello everybody, I just finished the first semester in the evening section. I was active at this board but of course it was impossible to do so while at school . Just wanted to say goodluck to everyone and I hope to bump into those planning to attend the evening class. My advice for the afternoon and evening class (as I know who your professor is going to be ) is to listen to lectures very hard, take careful notes, even bring a recorder if needed. You will find (as others before me warned) that exams are very different in nursing class and that critical thinking is a definite must. Take time to read your books associated with the lectures everyday if possible because it will be very difficult if you cram a few days before the exam (found this the hard way). If anybody has questions, I will try to answer them as soon as I can. Right now, I am also starting to read some of the books for Nursing 2 (Maternity and Psych) that we are already required to buy. Best Regards, Dee

BMCC Spring 2011 hopefuls?
Hi Solange, I hope your first day of class went well! Do you know when you guys are going to take your math exam? Ours is on Feb. 19 :). Best Regards, Dee

BMCC Spring 2011 hopefuls?
Hi Solange, Yes. Calculator is not allowed so definitely need to brush up on basic division/multiplication. I finished the edgt test and there were definitely a lot of big numbers in there. I am also worried on conversion as I keep forgetting conversion numbers between household and metric (e.g. ounce to ml, Tbs to ml, etc). ~Dee

BMCC Spring 2011 hopefuls?
Hi Solange, I'm doing the edgt now and it seems whatever is in the paper given to us during the orientation, that's the only prof's name available. Also speaking of clinicals, we have Bellevue, Mary Manning Walsh, WoodHull and Lenox Hill. Has anybody bought nursing shoes already? I need something really comfortable as I always get leg cramps if I stand/walk too much all day and I wonder what brand I should buy (which is hopefully not too expensive). Wish we could just use white sneakers sigh... ~Dee
