FALL 2020 Johns Hopkins MSN: Entry into Nursing

Updated:   Published

Hello everyone,

I'm currently preparing to apply to JHSON MSN: Entry into nursing program for fall 2020. I was wondering anyone has an idea what the acceptance criteria is?

I have a very good gpa in undergrad (3.92) so the admissions team told me I do not need to include GRE scores.

Also how many words should our essays be?

Best of Luck!

The only people who can truly tell you any kind of odds of getting are the admissions personnel. I understand your curiosity and concern. Try to submit your impression, and let the chips fall where they will. With a little luck, you'll get an offer of acceptance.

Hopefully, you applied to more than school.

I applied on the November 1 early decision deadline. My LOR came after, with one still outstanding. NursingCAS didn't verify my academic history, yet they had for the previous session, which they use to transfer to this application.

I suggest going to one of their information sessions. They have them there and at varies schools. I went to one at CSU East Bay. There is a virtual one coming up this Tuesday (Nov 12). I asked questions.

I have no idea about my chances. I did all the essays, which is either going to help or hurt me, but I figure it gives them more information to base their decision on. I actually sought help from a friend who has been writing for around fifteen years; he is a graduate literate program. I've been writing objectively for the last fifteen years because it has been nothing but legal reports, which having an opinion is inappropriate. I have limited health experience. Been an on-call CNA at a military senior community in the memory ward of the skilled nursing facility since April. More unique for me, and no something I think many will have, I have been a human dissector at my school where I help prepare the cadavers for the Human Anatomy class for study, lessons, and exams. I also was able to arrange to be able to see an autopsy at the local county coroner's office. My GPA is decent, around 3.35. I got my bachelor's many moons ago from a well-regarded university. My GPA there, was probably just under 3.0 if you include my work at the local community college. But according to the NursingCAS, but post-bachelor's undergraduate work is a 3.79. My prereqs are all As except two Bs, which probably around 3.58GPA. There will be plenty of people who higher scores than myself. My LOR

I think what JHSON is looking for is someone that has an indication he/she can handle the rigors of the program, so this is where the GPA is considered. But they are most likely looking for people who have a passion/desire to be a nurse; maybe be some kind of leader. They also want people to bring differing backgrounds since all the students will be interacting with each other and will have influence and educating each other. They also looking for people who want to be nurses for something beyond the paycheck. If that's you, from what I hear, probably not the best profession to get into from what I hear from other nurses.

End of the day, for me personally, it would be awesome to be accepted. I also applied to UCLA, Univ of San Diego for accelerated masters. In addition, I applied to CSU East Bay, CSU Sacramento, CSU Long Beach, and San Diego State for the BSN program, and the local community college for their ADN. I'm currently waitlisted at CSU East Bay for the Spring 2020 cohort.

The funny one today, I got an email from NursingCAS stating my application was verified for JHSON. But the heading made it sound like it almost an acceptance letter, which I knew was not possible, LOL.

Hi everyone

I also just submitted my application about 3 weeks ago. Glad to have found this page! Does anyone know how soon you found out if you were accepted or not for the priority deadline? How many people took the GRE and didn't? I'm pretty nervous about the whole process. Best of luck to all!

How did you apply for Early decision? I didn't see the option. I did however turn in my app and got verified before November 1st. Is that Early decision?

Thanks so much for your response. I hope I get in! John Hopkins is my first choice.

As long as you submitted your application on or before Nov 1st, you'll be reviewed under Early decisions.

The admissions office also told me they allow some time for all your references to be submitted. However, the earlier the better.

I guess if they do not get it before decisions are made, they move the applicant to the regular decisions pool (my assumption)

I also submitted and got verified before the deadline. Just playing the waiting game now. I really hope to get in!

This is my first choice.

For deadlines: https://nursing.jhu.edu/admissions/apply/deadlines.html

Fall 2020:

app dead line: Early: November 1

priority: January 1

Notifiatiion of acceptence: November Deadline - Late December

January Deadline - Early March

From looking at the thread for the Fall 2019 cohort, these dates is what happened for them.

As for the GRE, I did not take it. From the information session, I attended in early October, I got the impression is not an issue if you did not. From what the school has found, and some research appears to support, that a GRE score is not a good indicator of graduate school success. I really got the impression they are more concern about the overall impression you give them--grades, essays, and letters of recommendation.

Nothing wrong with being a little nervous or anxious. Hopefully, you applied to more than one school including some ADN and BSN programs. There is more than one path to a career in nursing. Best of luck to you

Hi y'all!

I also applied to the ED November 1st deadline. Very anxious and excited to hear back even though I know it'll probably be like another month before we hear anything!

My stats include:

Biology degree with overall GPA: 3.67

GRE: 157V/158Q

2 years working as an EMT, summer as a nursing assistant for individuals with disabilities, worked part time through college

Best of luck to everyone!!!

We have similar stats! Here’s to hoping we are classmates (if JHK is your first choice) ?

For you’re it’s worth, I still check my email 3x a day. Also applied to BC as well. I overdid it on apps.

Has anyone ever heard of their application being moved to review? Mine has been stuck at verified for a while.

I just did two days ago, after my application had been verified for almost 2 weeks. You’ll probably get it soon. The email’s subject is “Congratulations you are the on your way...” to get you excited.

Hey Everyone!

Glad to see I'm not the only one sitting here waiting around anxiously. So cool to hear about all the cool experiences everyone here has. I feel a little out of left field, career swapping from a Certified Public Accountant in business advisory to nursing. My GPA is okay ~3.4, but stable through both my under grad and grad studies in Accounting. Not sure if coming from such a different profession is a good thing or not, but I've been volunteering at a local hospital and definitely love working with patients 10,000x more than working in a corporate setting. Feels so impactful and always leave with a full heart.

Fingers crossed and good luck to everybody else!
