Fall 2015, GCU/NAU

Published

Just putting out some feelers. Im signed up for my Kaplan entrance exam for NAU, but there isnt a lot of info out there to help. I was woundering if any other hopefulls are signed up and studying. From what ive herd, its really only general and very broad A&P for the science? Let me know if thats all that will help. Also, taking the HESI A2 in march and am just worried about how difficult ive herd it is. Any advise would help, as well as anyone who is also applying with me what is your timeline looking like? GCU has kind of been a mess for me with advising. Thanks!

Hello,

I'm currently in the NAU program and had to take the Kaplan. I took my Kaplan 2 years ago, so it might have changed, but considering the Kaplans we take in the program haven't changed, I highly doubt it has. For one, have you tried Googling "tips for Kaplan nursing school entrance exam". Click through links and you can find some good info. I even came across a blog post someone did that had some actual questions from the test--I'm not gonna do that, but the info is out there.

For math, it's pretty basic. You need to know fractions and decimals pretty well. A&P is the only science, and it's all physio-- they're not going to ask you "what bone is this", it's basically only A&P 2, not 1, so that will help you focus your studies a bit.

Good luck. If you have any questions about NAU, I can probably answer them, let me know!

Thank you so much! I was looking for study books and the only one I found seemed to be a general all nursing exams kind of book, published by Kaplan. But I just finished A&P 2 and really enjoyed it and spent a lot of time with that class so that should help. Are you in the tucson program? How competitive were admissions? My gpa was tanked my first semester because of two C's so now I'm applying with a 3.46. But I'm a current CNA at umc, should I be worrying that I don't have a chance?

Yes, I am in the Tucson program. Each semester varies with how competitive it is. They also look at how well you do on the Kaplan, so focus on doing well on that. 3.46 is a decent GPA, so I wouldn't lose all hope, but C's may hurt you--but who am I to say, I'm not in charge of admissions, so don't lose hope. I will tell you that if you don't get in this semester, retake the classes you got C's in, NAU only calculates the highest grade, they don't average them, so it will help your GPA greatly.

They were both gen eds not on the list of required classes to have a B or above. And I'm currently set up to retake one of them right now. But are there even people within the program that had a gpa similar to mine? But by the end of this semester it will be a 3.6, too bad that doesn't matter ha.

Oh, if they were Gen eds, I wouldn't sweat it at all! They're really looking at your prereq GPA. I had a couple C's in Gen eds.

Really? Not your overall gpa? Because if not that would seriously help and raise it up. Is a month enough to study for the Kaplan?

Your overall GPA is looked at, but I believe they are really only looking at your prereqs. Those are the most important. And I think a month should be enough time. Ideally, you already know what you need to know for the exam, you're not learning new material, you're reviewing.

That's true. Thank you so much! NAU would really be my all time number one choice and I've herd so many good things about the program and am really just stressing out to the max at this point haha

Good luck!! Feel free to message me with questions about the program if you have them. I love NAU :)

One more question I forgot to ask!! I hope you can still see this because it wont let me message you. Actually two. First, the gpa is it the overall or simply the gpa of the pre requisites. Also, what liberal arts courses look best or would be best to place on the application since there is only a place for three?

If you set an appointment and talk with the coordinator Joann she will help you through filling in that portion of the application. Did you get an AGEC first? Because I think you can write that in if you did. I would just talk to her because she is extremely helpful in those. I really wouldn't stress about the GCU test. It's not too difficult. I was able to pass it on the first try, but if you don't you can retake them so don't take it at the last possible time. I know people struggled some with the math, but I didn't seem to have much of a struggle. For the Kaplan focus on studying physio. You can do it!
