Fall 2010 Class Schedule: Is it too much?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So I will be starting as a pre-nursing student this fall and I have a few of the pre-reqs already out of the way due to my other degree. Now I signed up for:

Intro. to A&P

Intro. to Chemistry

Sociology(online)

Intro. to Algebra

Is this absolutely ridiculous? I REALLY don't want this second degree to take me as long as my first did. I will be working no more than 15 hours a week if that helps.

CHOW

Your post did not mention if you have children.

If you have children it will be harder because they will require much of your time. If you have a support system that is great and you will only need them more once you start your nursing program.

The A & P will be a very content heavy course and will require much study time. Plus retaining this material is important for A&P 2 which is a foundation to much of your nursing classes.

But it can be done it just takes organization, and good support from family and friends and or sig. other. And your friends will have to learn sooner or later your social life will pretty much be on the back burner until you get finished with school.

Good luck to your on your journey!

Specializes in ICU.

I took similar course loads in my pre-req semesters:

Fall 09

CNA class

Anatomy

Microbiology

Intro to Psych (online)

Spring 10

Physiology

Developmental Psych (online)

Government (online)

Nutrition (online)

Summer 10

Composition II (online)

Statistics (online)

Organic Chem

I also had a lot of my basics (bio, chem I, chem II, other Englishes and histories) from a previous degree.

I work about 60 hours a week, and I've had no problems with content or grades this past year.

Lined up for the fall I have physics, pharmacology, and applying to my programs!

You shouldn't have a problem if you're only working part time and don't have many other family obligations.

If you really want to do it and believe you can, it will be fine. I scheduled A&p, English, Algebra, Chemistry and Psych for fall semester. You just have to be dedicated. Good Luck with the fall semester and Nursing school!

You know how good you are at science and math classes and how you handle a big workload. Keep in mind that getting into a nursing program, for most programs these days, involves getting as many A's as possible. In my day, a gentleman's B would do the trick. Those days are long gone. Many with perfect 4.0 GPAs get turned away. So, it may not be wise to overload yourself with academic work. A&P is a course that is a good candidate to be taken by itself by many students in order to do well.

Thanks guys! And no I do not have any children. Two dogs that are like children :) Well I think I will be able to do it! Do you have any tips on taking several classes at once. I'm not very good at organization so I want to get on the ball with that because I know I'm going to be soooo busy now!

Its not much. I was taking 5 classes every semester to finish my prereqs. faster and get into the nursing program. You can do it!!

Organization is the key. Get organized or get help getting organized, and stay organized. Do your assignments every day. Do not wait until the night before. I learned to view each assignment or exam as a separate entity. I wrote everything out on my planner and went from one to the next, in order. Long term assignments got some kind of attention every day. I hardly ever stopped working on schoolwork. You get on a roll and keep yourself on a roll. And don't get sick!

I was going to ask this exact question today but i rather not start a new thread and just ask it here. I'll be taking a&p 1 over summer as soon as i graduate high school. Then take a&p 2, chem 2, english 2, college algebra and microbiology. I thought 3 sciences would be a bit much so I was thinking of taking micro in the spring instead. I just want to finish all my pre-reqs as quickly as possible so I can go into the nursing program fall 2012. caliotter 3 your post scares me! I thought if i had a 4.0 on my pre-reqs and then a 90+ on the TEAS i would basically be guarenteed a spot in a nursing program. I'm only 17 so I dont have much volunteer experience. Now i'm really nervous

It really just depends on your location and the competitiveness of your school. Where I am (in Oklahoma), a 3.0-3.5 on pre-reqs will get you in, and they don't even ask about volunteer experience at any of the schools I'm looking at (ADN and BSN). No TEAS required at any of the schools, just a general English reading comprehension and vocab test. Don't be afraid, just do your research early, and work hard! :) I wish I had known what I wanted and been as determined as you seem when I was your age - I think you'll be just fine.

You don't have to be nervous, the point was to not overload and do average when you can take less of a load and do fantastic. As in another post, it depends on your location, what type of school and what the school's requirements are. You are young and have lots of time so not sure why cramming all those classes in. That is a lot with labs and will be an unbelievable amount of homework. Basically you need all the pre-reqs so when you said I thought if I had a 4.0....... it is that you are planning on getting a 4.0 taking these five classes at once. Only you know your study habits and capabilities. No doubt, you will be very busy, I wish you the best.

Because you are a pre-nursing student, I think that you might need to get used to what it will feel like once you take the nursing courses. The courses that you are taking is a perfect amount, with A+P being the most difficult. But they are even close to being as time consuming as the nursing courses will be. So taking these classes are a good start towards preparing you for the heavy work load of a real nursing student. Fifteen hours a week is not too bad and I promise that you will be able to handle the courses that you chose. Just don't give up and by the end of the semester, you will be proud that you got them out of your way and you are one step close towards becoming a nursing student. :nurse:
