How did everyone's first day go?

My class was at 7am this morning... the earliest I've had to be mentally alert for quite some time! Still, my professor sounds like he is good: lots of easy-to-earn points like attendance points, homework points, etc. His lecture tests have 150 points total... but he only counts 120 of them in the actual grade, so you can screw up 30 points and be okay (I don't know how many actual questions this works out to, but we'll see). Plus, everything is multiple-choice, and the lab practicals (which always kill me) are about half the points as a regular lecture test, so that seems like a good thing to me.

He really does look like a Middle-Eastern Richard Dreyfus/Mr. Holland with a bowtie - he's a real MD and managed to keep my attention the entire class, which is quite a feat, considering it was 1) before noon and 2) me and my ADD brain! :smokin: He had some sort of fascination with the word "capisce?" any time he wanted to make sure we understood (and he's not Italian), but that was the only weird thing. So far, so good.

How are everyone else's classes going?

(I know there was another A & P II thread going for this semester, but it seems to have been lost in the shuffle)

Specializes in Maternity, quality.

My A&P II class starts tomorrow! :balloons: How's everyone else doing?

GirlyNurse, we're not on the Endocrine section yet, but the only advice I can give you is word association. For example, I needed to remember the term circumventricular organ, and I just kept thinking circumcision. It helped me a lot. Our class is on the brain, cranial nerves, and the autonomic nervous system and visceral reflexes. Good luck to you.

Its weird how everyone is starting at different areas, we started on Aug 24, and began with the Cardiovascular system. My first test is in 2 weeks, although it was suppose to be this coming Friday but my professor doesnt think she has prepared us enough, dont you love when that happens, so now she moved it.

My class started on Saturday and we're doing the cardiovascular system first (wish I'd known that before I read the chapter on the endocrine system... it was where we left off last semester and I wrongly assumed that's where we'd pick up). Most of the people in class I know from A&P I, but it's a smaller class than it used to be. Not sure if people got weeded out, took it over the summer, or just gave up... or maybe they didn't like having to get up early on Saturdays. But it's good to be back in class, our prof (same as the one for last semester) is excited to get into the systems and we should have a good time.

My class is smaller, too.

We have a Lec. and Lab. test over endocrine and blood tomorrow.

Good luck on your test! :) Our first one isn't scheduled until Oct. 1st.

Specializes in Urgent Care.

For me,the best way to learn the endocrine system was to write out the feedback loops

Hypothalamus- TRH

Anterior pituitary- TSH

Thyroid gland- T3, T4

It's a bit eaier to correlate what stimulates what, and also how for instance if you have a low t3 T4 due to a receptor problem, why the TSH would be high.

Specializes in Operating Room.

I sat down and typed out exactly what happened with each hormone, printed it out & studied it.

Good luck. :)

I think AP II is way harder than AP I. I am really nervous because on the 20th of this month is my first lecture test on the Endocrine and Cardiovascular system. Does anybody have any tips on memorizing all the glands that go with each of the hormones (ex. Norepinephrine for the adrenal medulla, or ADH for the hypothalumus)??? Can anyone give me tips on how to do well on this sequence of AP??? Please, please, please HELP!!!!

I'm still confused on my APII class. I loved taking API online because it was more structured and I still really learned a lot.

My APII online (diff. instructor) has easy little labs (color and label) every other week. Three different message board topics for the whole semester only required to write and answer one other person. Then, three tests the whole semester. Ugghhh I worry I'm not going to learn ANYTHING.

I felt the same way with A&P 2...didn't feel like I was learning as much as I did with A&P 1. (Different school, different instructor, but same college district.)

Maybe it's just an A&P2 phenomenon. LOL :)

Good luck, YOU CAN DO IT! :)

That sounds very frustrating... I've never taken an online class, so I'm not sure I have any advice for you, but I hope it goes better than expected.

We started on the endocrine system and now we are on blood. First test is in two weeks on endocrine, blood, cardiovascular, & lympathic systems.

We also have to do a paper on a topic from the book. I'm leaning toward a reproduction topic.

Last week there was a small mutiny in the class. One loud mouthed student (there's always one) said she wasn't understanding the material and couldn't figure out what informaiton was testable, etc. I can appreciate that some people don't get certain stuff, but she was just totally obnoxious.
