How did everyone's first day go?

My class was at 7am this morning... the earliest I've had to be mentally alert for quite some time! Still, my professor sounds like he is good: lots of easy-to-earn points like attendance points, homework points, etc. His lecture tests have 150 points total... but he only counts 120 of them in the actual grade, so you can screw up 30 points and be okay (I don't know how many actual questions this works out to, but we'll see). Plus, everything is multiple-choice, and the lab practicals (which always kill me) are about half the points as a regular lecture test, so that seems like a good thing to me.

He really does look like a Middle-Eastern Richard Dreyfus/Mr. Holland with a bowtie - he's a real MD and managed to keep my attention the entire class, which is quite a feat, considering it was 1) before noon and 2) me and my ADD brain! :smokin: He had some sort of fascination with the word "capisce?" any time he wanted to make sure we understood (and he's not Italian), but that was the only weird thing. So far, so good.

How are everyone else's classes going?

(I know there was another A & P II thread going for this semester, but it seems to have been lost in the shuffle)

One loud mouthed student (there's always one) said she wasn't understanding the material and couldn't figure out what informaiton was testable, etc. I can appreciate that some people don't get certain stuff, but she was just totally obnoxious.

We have one classmate like that, too.

I take this course with my A&P 1 instructor. His tests are harder this time; I am not sure why...

Maybe he wants us to be ready for nursing school.

Our first lecture test is this Wednesday on CV/lymphatic system. Augh! I have a different instructor for II than I did for I - my I professor was kind of psycho as a person, and this professor is a whole lot calmer, very structured. I hope all of that plus my studying pays off for a good grade! Wish me luck...

The only problem with my class is that it meets 7:30-9:30am. I prefer it WAY over the 7:30-9:30PM evening class I had for A & P I, but since I am so not a morning person, I am really fighting to stay awake, especially since they keep the room temp at, like, 65 and I get verrrrrry sleepy when I am cold. I have to come in there with a heavy sweater, fuzzy socks, and a huge mug of coffee! :p

Test #1, here I come...

Good luck!

Our first test in on Saturday... and we've only gone over one chapter so far! I have no idea how we're going to cover the rest of the systems at this rate. As it was our last class we covered NOTHING new, just went over the same stuff all over again for two and a half hours! Argh...

The same here. It's around 95 here in Dallas, but I have to take my sweater to class, because it's cold inside.

We just took our first online test this week. COvering three chapters, 100 ???S, and an hour timed to do it online. I finished half before time ran out so I got a 46 :uhoh21: but have emailed the teacher to see if there is any way I can do extra credit. I've made 100s on all labs and group discussions. I'm a very SLOW reader. I studied very hard for this test but it was so hard to take with no prior knowledge of what would be on the test, practice test etc.

THere are only 4 tests the whole semester so I better do good the other three. Gotta learn to stop lingering over every question I guess.

Yay! I got a 92! :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

The test was freakin' HARD, too... our professor is an MD and cut us no slack. Additionally, he put the hardest questions right at the beginning: choose the best answer out of the four best choices for each question. Agh! It was good practice for the NCLEX, I suppose, but I sure was sweating. There were 150 questions, but 30 were given to us in a "mock" exam (which we were allowed to copy... and which he put into the test exactly as they were), and he only counts 120 of those points. So, 90 out of the 150 were the unknowns. I think if all 150 had been regular, never-seen-before questions and he counted every point, I think I would have had a high C or low B - still pretty good, but certainly not a 92!

He told us the next test (dig system, nutrition & metabolism) is the easiest of the semester, and the 3rd and final exam (male/female repro, respiratory, and whatever else is left) is as hard as the first. He told me I was off to a very good start! :D

How's everyone else doing?

I got a 99% on my first exam! It covered the endocrine and cardiovascular system! I studied my butt off, so I deserve it! Now we are going to cover the blood/circulatory system and the lympatic system! I hope to pass, the test is on Thursday. There was not a curve on the first exam and there were 80 questions so that there was more weight on the questions. There are 315 people in my class and 70 people failed the first test. It was hard! Wish me luck on my next exam! Bye!:balloons: :balloons: :p :p

I just want to confirm somthing to make sure I am right/am getting it. Ok, the epiphyseal plate stops because of hormones (puberty) Estrogen is a very strong osteogenic and testosterone is a very stong myogentic. Boys are taller than girls because.....girls start puberty early which stops the lengthening of bones right?

Specializes in Operating Room.

Boys start puberty later, and because of this, they get to grow longer before their bones totally ossify.

Here is my answer to a question I had about this in A&P1:

Hormonal Regulation of Bone Growth

Growth Hormone - before puberty

Increases cartilage growth rate

Increases ossification rate, but not as much as cartilage growth rate.

Sex Hormones - at puberty

Androgen

Estrogen

Increases cartilage growth rate.

Increases ossification rate even more.

The homeostasis of bone growth is maintained by the release of growth hormone and sex hormones. The growth hormone makes the cartilage grow faster than the ossification rate in order for the body to grow enough.

The sex hormones increases the cartilage rate, but increases the ossification rate even more. This causes a growth spurt, and then the bone growth ceases.

Update to my test!

My teacher allows multiple attempts (online course) so I retook it two times and got a 100! Woohoo only 3 more to go!
