failed my science courses

Hi guys, I'm very interested to an LVN and eventually to RN but my problem is I have a low cumulative gpa of 2.21 and failed my microbiology, C grade for physiology, and retook Human anatomy and received a C. Now my school won't let me get in the program, so is there any path I can take such as going to a different community college and starting all over withough transferring my gpa (is that bad?) or maybe going to a private school? pls advice.

Thanks,

Yes that is not a good gpa. People here are not getting into RN school without 4.0 (straight a's) and LPN's need great grades too. If you got C's I am wondering if you are putting enough into it. Schools will look unfondly upon that. My best advice is try another school and start over with your pre's at another school

I'm thinking about that path, but would I get in trouble if I start all over to a different college without transferring my transcript?

Look for a LPN program at a technical school (may also be called a vocational school) where the costs are still reasonable ($5K at a local school here, vs about $18K-20K for a private school in the same area). They often don't have pre-reqs, but you take a TEAS (or similar) entrance test, and their may be a waiting list. Their classes won't transfer into a community college, but after you have your LPN license, you can work AND look for a school with an LPN bridge to RN program. At present, most don't have the same selective process (nearly perfect GPA) to get in...usually you just have to have your LPN license and their pre-requisites (check to see if they have any requirements on the grade earned for the classes you've already taken). Ask, ask, ask. Guidance counselors at schools are there for YOU...they should be helpful, not discouraging. Good luck!

Thanks scrapworking! I went to see an advisor at my school earlier and she didn't seem too excited after seeing my transcript and she told me that since I failed my microbiology class and retook human anatomy that i have no chance in RN program for that school but I may have a chance to get into Respiratory and psychiatric program. I am two classes shy from getting into the RT program but do they have bridge prog-RN program for that? My other option is to attend a private school for LVN but the cost would be around $24k, or I can go to military for 4 years and then when i come out I can go for that LVN program and have the military pay for it. any advice would help? thanks so much.

Most of the time, if not always, you have to send your transcripts from your old school to any new school you go to and if you make a c, you cant take the class over. Another recommendation I have; a lot of schools go by a points system. an A is worth 4 points, a B is worth 3, and you just multiply the number of credits the class is worth by the letter grade........my school (FSCJ) does this point system and the 145-160ish people with the most points every semester get accepted. So you don't necessarily have to have a 4.0 and you dont necessarily have to make straight A's, just as long as you have a high number of points. You should look at community colleges in your area and see if them offer a system like that. A private school is def. an option but it will be expensive. LPN bridge is probably your best option because usually you dont have to take any pre-reqs. You just have to take the TEAS which is kind of like an entrance exam. Good luck :)

This isn't true, at least at my school it's not true, you can retake a class you got a C in at my school.

Classes passed with C's at my school can't be repeated. Grade forgiveness only applies for D's and F's. I think you should really look into a LPN program. Definitely look for a technical/vocational school in your area. There's no reason why you need to pay $25k for a LPN program. Once you've completed the LPN program, you can bridge to RN. Bridge/transition programs are usually not nearly as competitive as generic RN programs.

Some schools have grade replacement, at least my school does.

Yeah both the schools Ive been to are the same way, only allow retakes for anything below a C. I think the LPN-RN bridge would be the best option too

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there are no RT to RN programs. The community college I did prerequisites at gives 1 semester advanced placement to paramedics though, but I'm not sure how common that is. Can you retake the classes at your current school? IME when you transfer to another school, you can transfer courses but your GPA resets. Your previous grades will still follow you around since most schools want to see all of your transcripts, but if the school you transfer to only looks at your GPA with that school, it might give you a better shot at getting accepted to a nursing program.

Whatever else happens, you need to start creating a pattern of success in your classes. Are you making the most of the resources available to you? Are there classes you can take that would prep you for the harder sciences (many of the schools I applied to didn't require an intro level biology, but for someone who struggles with science, it would have been helpful to take before the A&P and micro classes). How many classes are you taking a semester? Are you working too? Some people can go full time and work full time and excel but not everyone can so you might benefit from slowing things down.

you made a c on both and that's counted as fail? i thought anything lower than a d for a program is unacceptable and failing? anyways, i can't believe that some schools do not let their students retake a class if the students want to shoot for a higher and better grade. luckly i go to a school that i can retake a course no matter what letter grade i got. if i got a b, and want an a, i sure can retake it.

anyways-good luck
