failed my science courses

Published

Hi guys, I'm very interested to an LVN and eventually to RN but my problem is I have a low cumulative gpa of 2.21 and failed my microbiology, C grade for physiology, and retook Human anatomy and received a C. Now my school won't let me get in the program, so is there any path I can take such as going to a different community college and starting all over withough transferring my gpa (is that bad?) or maybe going to a private school? pls advice.

Thanks,

The transition program I am in accepts RTs, rad techs, and CVT's, in addition to the usual LPNs and paramedics. We have a few of each, but the majority of the class is either a LPN or paramedic.

What about finding a program that is on a lottery? As long as you meet their pre-req requirements (I think a C might work). One more option to look into.

Thanks guys for the quick advices. My current school and most school I inquired in have a 1 retake policy, meaning a student can only retake one of the 4 science courses required for the RN program once. My only option is to find a community college that offers vocational nurse and then do the bridge program after that. But my only concern is should I declare my old transcript to the new school? Since I have low GPA and failed science courses at my current college I dont know if I would get in trouble (academically) if I were to start all over to a new school without stating my previous college. any clues?

My other option is the RT or psychiatric program. I just need one more math class to apply and there is up to 1 year wait, but I think only psychiatric program has the bridge program to RN. I can either apply and try to get either one and then try to get into CPC (certified professional coder) at the same time. OR just stick with LVN route and hope for the best?

So my first semester in college, fresh out of high school, I did horribly, horribly bad. GPA was so bad, I got kicked out of school, no academic warning or anything. I had the option of starting at the local community college, which I did. They made it seem like it would be the end of the world if I didn't have my previous transcripts sent over. I had them sent over, and my horrible GPA followed me to me to the new school. I was on academic probation for 6 years while making up these classes from the first college :stone. Granted I was only going part-time. A couple years later, I was speaking with an academic advisor about my previous horrible GPA. I made the comment that I really wish I never had had to send the transcripts. Her response? "Why did you? How would they ever know if you had been a student somewhere else first?"

With that said, you don't have to send your transcripts from a previous school, but you do run the risk of, if ever found out for some reason, being accused of academic dishonesty. I honestly don't know what the repercussions of this would be.

And if you are thinking about starting over from the ground up, I would take each course one at a time - just one, work very hard and study very hard and do well, then take the next. In the LPN program without prerequisites, you still have to take those classes, but they build them into your program schedule. That is the type of LPN program I am in now - you should plan on a minimum of 2 hours of study for each 1 hour of lecture/class time...the LPN program isn't as hard to get into, but shares a lot of similar classes and knowledge that you must know. Anatomy & Physiology is an important part of either program...and for me, the A&P and Microbiology were the easy courses. Good luck in whatever you decide!

ok, I'll definately take the lvn route to a different school, so anyone knows if i'll get in trouble if i dont transfer my previous college transcript?

Someone told me army has lvn program?? is that transferrable most colleges?.

thanks

When I applied to the CC for my AS and to the BSN program I just applied to, we had to have every transcript sent, no matter when (mine was 15 yrs ago) or where. For the CC I asked why and they said it was to make sure there were no finances owing more than past grades. Good luck!

Even if the military has a LVN program for 4 years of service, I would advise agaisnt it. That's 4 years of your life to have them pay for something you could save up for in 2 or less and pay on your own. It doesn't make financial sense. Now, if you have a desire to serve in the military, that's different, and a very noble and worthy cause imo. Have a FIL who was a marine and a bother in the Navy, very proud of them both.

Also, have you considered why you did so poorly in your science classes? Failing microbiology and barely passing A&P is not a recipe for success in any nursing program, regardless of where you get accepted. I think before you pick ANY program, you need to figure out why you have done so poorly in those classes and what you can do to remedy it. Are you too busy with work or family? Did you not put in enough study time? Are you a poor test taker? Find out why it is you keep peforming so poorly and determine what you will do differently this time around so you don't make the same mistakes. A lot of us come from not-so-stellar academic backgrounds but are great students now, so don't be discouraged! Just find out what it is you are lacking, improve on it and then the sky's the limit! Good luck in whatever you decide!

Yes you can get in trouble for not sending your transcripts from you old school
