Hey guys,
so this past fall semester was my first semester in a BSN program. I was a transfer from a community college and it was my first semester at this new institution. I took Pharmacology, Medsurg and health assessment all at once. I was only able to pass health assessment. I really did study and study and just was not successful. I'm awaiting a dismissal letter from the school and I THINK I will have a option to appeal. My question is should I appeal? IF i do and IF they accept it then I believe i would have to start over and the deal would be I cannot fail anything else. Now my question is has anyone ever been in this situation and were you able to go through the whole program without failing again? Will other nursing programs take me? Ever? Ever again? Or is that it for my nursing aspirations?
The other thing is because it was my first semester and since I didn't pass this has now caused me to put on academic probation at this school. I know my scholarship is down the drain but to keep my financial aid i have to find a way to bring my now 0.7 gpa up to a 2.0 before the school dismisses me at the end of the year. (spring semester)
IF I apply to other schools do I have to show them this schools transcript because if i keep just my first institution's transcript then I think I still have a shot at a second chance.
Honestly, I DONT know what to do or how to think but a choice has to be made by Januray. I've just been in serious depression. I have never felt SO DUMB in my life. I have never failed and to go from that to failing TWO classes? I feel like my life is a game show. It's so bad. If I had seen myself here in august, I would NOT have gone to school at all :/ I never even knew what academic probation was until now :/ THis is all a shock still... GUUYS PLEASE HELP BECAUSE I AM REALLLY AT A LOSS
-Thanks

Yes you do. They will find out that you attended this school simply because you had financial aid.
You need to figure out what went wrong and create a remediation plan to be successful. What did you fail? Did you not have any indication your grades were not adequate? What did you do to remediate during the semester?

First. Breathe. In and out.
Yes if you apply to other schools you will have to show them your transcript from this institution.
Yes you can succeed in a program even after you've failed once before. You need to sit down with your instructors and find out WHY you failed. And figure what to do to make it not happen again.
Go talk to the financial aid office. They usually have appeals for people in your situation where you can receive aid as long as you continue successfully in the program.
Again. Breathe in breathe out.
Failure is a bruise; not a tattoo.
They will?
OMG. HOW? Does fin aid tell the nursing department? This is the community college I was at before going to the university so they already have my transcript there . How will they know I went to another school? I am doomed for life. WOW. I failed Pharmacology and MEDSURG. I was doing well till midterms which is why dropping the classes was not even an option but My grades just surged down (60's and 50's) and stayed that way. Its just sad.
Thank you for you kind words. I am trying so harddd to breathe. Its the end of academic career. Will any school EVER consider me? I dont mind coming back years later if that is what it takes...

Financial aid tells the school who will automatically be able to find out what you took and your grades etc. Also by your SSN. My BSN program at IU found classes I forgot I took years ago. Thank goodness I had straight As...

This. If you go to https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/ and login it will tell you all the schools you got aid at and the amounts. The schools also have access to this, so I wouldn't try to omit a school that you have been to.
First, I would sit down with your professors or advisor and see what went wrong. Are you a poor test taker? Anxiety? Poor paper writer? Then address those issues and go from there. Reach out when you start to struggle, don't wait until it's too late.
Wherever you go next you'll likely be placed on academic probation automatically until your GPA is up. My program had a strict fail two classes and you're out policy. A lot of the people who failed out of the university program were accepted into the neighboring community college ASN program without any issues. Good luck to you.

I was in your spot many, many years ago when I attempted my ASN. I failed Maternity and had to wait a year for a spot to open up. I made it through the last semester and failed Mental Health (2 strikes and you are out). I lost my appeal (it would have been the only class I needed to complete my degree) and was officially dismissed from the program. I moved on with my life doing various jobs in the hospital and then settled into a 14 yr career doing sleep studies for a physician group. 18 yrs after being dismissed from the ASN program, I gave nursing school another try (at the same school) and entered their 15 month ABSN program. Thanks to maturity and a long career in the medical field, I flew through the program with a high GPA without any of the anxiety that I had the first time around.

It's not the end. My first attempt at university ended in abject failure; GPA of like 1.2. Yes, I had to carry those grades years later when I went back, but I finished nursing school with a 4.0. There is always hope when you are willing to work hard.

The first thing you should have done this past semester was sit down with your instructors to see why you were failing the tests. You need to have gone over each question to see why you failed. Getting into any other program at this point is a waste of time and money because you have no idea why you actually failed these tests.
Nursing school is a different animal from regular classes and degrees. You are not memorizing information anymore to just spit it out on a test. You have to memorize information, and be able to apply it to real life situations. This is what critical thinking is about.
The questions only get harder the further you go in the program. This past semester was my 3rd out of 4th in the program and the ante was upped big time. The first couple of tests I did terribly on. I actually failed the first one miserably. I got in the habit of setting appts with my professor and going over each question I missed. They are preparing you for NCLEX. This is why it is important to know why you missed.
I managed to bring my grade up, but only because I understood my mistakes from the beginning. I corrected and listened to my instructor on why I was making errors.
You need a good remediation plan. And yes, every school can see what school you went to previously and it's considered academic dishonesty to not reveal other schools and you can be kicked out of schools period for it. It's very difficult to get into another school with academic dishonesty on your record.

We had students that failed out of a local BSN program come to the ASN program. We had students that failed out of our ASN program go to that school instead. It was funny to hear the students bash the programs they failed out of and praise the ones that they went into. Both programs did it. If you want the chance of your credits transferring, look at local programs. They may make you take remedial classes to bring your GPA up.
We also had students that failed out and went into the LPN program. They were eligible to reapply for their LPN to RN program with credit for the classes they passed. My friend failed out his first semester, became a LPN student, and now is graduating this May with his RN.
