The above is very true. It was my habit way back in college that I would only study the night before the actual exam. On my NLE I studied on the day before until 10 pm. That night I wasn't able to get some good sleep because my mind was still at work. Anxiety plus fear was in my mind. So, I highly recommend to do some long term studying and keep it a habit that you'll have a regular study period. When you study you focus, when break time comes you really have to get some rest. Its just a matter of discipline. God bless on your exam.

You know, when I was taking the NLE, the second day, I was having a severe vertigo. To the extend that I forgot if I answered the questions right! With God's grace, I passed! First take!

I think that vertigo helped me to concentrate and didn't feel nervous.. Or is it the other way around? hahaha....

Hi,

I would suggest to really understand how the exam was made, try to review previous board exam questions, I am a newly registered nurse, I would suggest on answering on those NCLEX CDs like Brunner, Saunders etc.. You must familarize yourself on the previouse board exam questions, not just focusing at a specific topic.. What I did was I almost finished Brunner & Suddarths CD, and ernoll in Merge review center followed their advices and lots of Prayers, luckily I passed..Good luck to your girlfriend..

For those who fail the NCLEX or NLE..i agree with the old-timer who passed a looong time ago : same tenet applies nowadays. The same cognitive learning modalities exist today and existed a long time ago too. We learn by memorizing facts, a lot of those, then we become cognizant of relationships for all the facts memorized, analyze such relationships and then apply what we know.....sounds like Piaget's principles of children learning..yeah...it's basic...

Nurses taking the NLE or NCLEX have to memorize a lot of factual info and then apply it; however, keep in mind that all interventions - hence every answer for any question on these exams- is the most correct answer only when it reflects a 'safe' and 'effective' intervention. Some answers may have an 'effective' intervention element, others the 'safe' intervention element and therefore only partially correct. All nurses taking the exams, granted they have to have memorized most nursing factula info in four years of schooling, have to stick to the selecting answer by the safe and effective duality on intervention, today as in the past.....loooong time ago.

You can take or leave this advice, entirely up to you.

In my experience, I see the NCLEX and possibly the NLE (as demonstrated by review sessions and what classmates/professors tell me) as very much like the way the typical tests are conducted throughout my schooling in the US and Canada. They nearly all end up being multiple choice, choose the best answer. This basically forces you to not only memorize, but actually internalize, chew it up, digest it, and get the "nutrients" of what you have learned. Simple memorization is certainly necessary for a lot of facts and figures that we will use every day in nursing, don't get me wrong... But you really have to live and breathe this stuff to "Get it". I would hate to lose it all two weeks after cramming a review in to write NCLEX, NLE, or any other test. The real learning is going to happen at your job, and we better be speaking "Nurse" better than English OR Ilocano!!

Best of luck!!

Hi!

i dont know if this helps, but the june 2008 board exam did not have a single question about CHN... most of the questions in NP2 were from maternal and pedia... and lots of psych and MedSurg questions... :)

i say relax b4 the exam, like, the day b4 it, u shouldnt worry ursellf about the test, no more reviewing, get enough sleep and DO NOT listen to what other people say will come out in the exam and panic about not being able to read about that topic... and start cramming... itll just distract you...

why not petition her for fiance visa? then make her take the nclex, instead. she will have better future in the US. of course, that is, if you are willing to marry her though. Anyway, as for my opinion, the nle will get her to nowhere...specially, most specially, since unemployment in the Philippines, not to mention the over production and population of nurses in the country, is worsening from day to day...

Hi TS,

Here's my advice:

NP1 - Read Kozier's book "Fundamental of Nursing". 100% the BON takes their questions here, word for word and sometimes re-phrase. They focus more on skills, so better read those procedures.

NP2 - Focus more on MCN. no specific books here just read all possible references. CHN questions are minimal (20+ questions or so). This part has the "out-of-this-world questions" so be ready for that. Also, they have integrated here Nursing Informatics so better read through the internet. IMCI never fails to come out.

NP3 and NP4 - Lippincott or Saunders could help, but imho, you should have known this by heart. I suggest reading more on Cardio, Respi, Gastro and Surgical Nursing. 1 of the BON member was an OR nurse and she loves giving "sterility" questions.

NP5 - Love your therapeutic communication. This will come in handy during this part.

Nursing Research and "Leadership and Management" were thrown all through out the exam, so just read the book from that UP professor?! (i forgot the name).

I just took the board last June and fortunately I passed it with a decent grade. I haven't attended any review classes, just reviewed on my own. I read and answered different exam from nclex to local boards. If she will be taking the board this Nov., my advice could be relevant. Know your BON, how they think - how they construct questions - how they play with words. After all, they are the only one who knows the answers, not your reviewers nor the books (literally speaking).

Sorry, but what you are suggesting will not work. CA is requiring the local license before they will grant one to sit for the NCLEX exam and this has been in effect since January. Having a green card does not exempt one from this requirement. She has no choice but to take and pass that exam if she is wishing to work in CA. Simple as that.

If one wishes to work in the US, they need to meet the requirements of the state as well as our government.

We also ask that you stick to the topic that is being discussed and this one concerns suggestions for helping to pass this exam. The poster is well aware that this exam is actually required.

my apologies :) but i am just wondering, how come 2 of my classmates just took the nclex and passed it without having the local exam? they just sent an explanation and that's it. it was last august when they took it. CA. and i am very sure that they didn't take the NLE...

to stay on topic and not get reprimanded :saint:

hmmm...just work harder...perhaps, she's not exerting enough to get it right. well sorry to speak harsher than what most people will say, but passing isn't something you'll get out of good words from others. It will depend PURELY on hard work. 1% of prayer will of course do, but mostly hard work! goodluck! :)
