Did Satan vomit on my doorstep??? Since I got canned last month (thank you for your kind support on my behalf for sticking up for patient safety and unfair labor law violations...see "I got Canned!) I have attempted to join an new registry. This has been going on for over a week. After spending 4.5 hours taking wriiten exams and compliance evaluations which could not EQUAL sitting for my boards, I am providing blood, urine, happy factor, access to my personal life and am now informed by an MD that my urine came back positive for benzodiazapine. Cricky balls! If everything I've been thru over the past few weeks doesn't merit a little valium, I don't know what would! I do have a scrip for ativan and did succomb to it's evils a few fort nights ago, provided a copy of the RX to the agency, but the MD is not satisfied. He states that the by product that came back positive was from a sedative like ambien, valium, traxene, etc. NOW, I have an old scrip for ambien on file with my MD but I have not taken any. What would you do ?
Just came back from my MD. She said, "don't worry about it! Feggedaboutit !" and provided a copy of the ativan scrip. That is the only RX I have that I take so I'm not going into a tail spin over it but yes , the quantitative metabolites from ativan and valium are different, just don't know how valium could have shown up in my urine test. FYI, you can test positive for up to 6 weeks. I just BET this MD will notify the BRN that I am a wild eyed crack head in denial! WooHooo!!! Of interest, I am reading the November issue of Readers Digest (liberated it from the waiting room) about an RN in PA who murdered patients, stole narcs etc. and he kept on WORKING!!! So go figure. And thanks for the hugs MattsMom, BTW, can anyone tell me what the heck a "roofie" is ?

a "roofie" is rophynol the date rape drug.
(((Haunted))) Hugs to you! I personally, think that a drug testing should only be used it there is a pattern of missing narcotics and there is no other logical explanation to where the drugs could be, except that someone is stealing them. I feel that if a person is doing their job thoroughly and safely, drug testing is unnecessary and a an invasion of privacy. Then again, I am in total support of the legalization of drugs...that's a whole new can of worms :chuckle
I just got fired for refusing a drug test. Let me explain. I was sent to the ER because a patient coughed in my face and some spit got close to my eye. It was ridiculous. I refused the drug screen because I had taken some Lortab that morning for my tooth which needs a root canal. They were my mom's Lortab and though I had an old RX for Lortab, I wasn't sure it was valid. So bye bye nice job in SICU. It really sucks.
The safest bet is to not take anything but of course that is not reality. I have had prn valium that has never showed up in drug test. But maybe because such a small amount, 5 to 10 mg over a 20 day period. Doctors don't get subject to drug testing the way nurses do. Also they are treated differently if they get drunk driving on their record. Nurses may lose their license by the BON if drunk driving on record. Nurses are treated this way because it is traditionally female dominant field so that means less money, prestige, and power. We will be treated this way as long as we put up with it.
Thank God for the waiver. I wouldn't be injected with that monkey pus for a million dollars.
Just wondering exactly how you came to this conclusion about vaccines. How does it affect your role as a nurse in the healthcare field? Immunizations do play a big role in healthcare...do you actually tell the patient you are about to administer "monkey pus" via an injection?

Why did they want to drug test you because you got spit in your eye??? Can you fight this?

Oh no....something similar happened to a coworker in my last ICU...she fought it and won...but she did ask for(and got) a RX from her doc (talk to your doc or dentist and explain the situation they may help you out)
My friend had an exposure and reported it, then knew she would test positive on the mandatory drug screen (anybody else think this is done to intimidate?) so she insisted on following up with the script..they tried to make a stink but she made one back and still has her job.
I hate how administrations treat nurses these days....so seldom do they give nurse the benefit of a doubt, we're under suspicion if we have procedures or dental work, etc done...
BTW Haunted how are things going for you? Any news?
Geez, what a bunch of baloney. My facility doesn't do much drug testing, I don't know anyone who has ever been tested there. Testing people who are involved in OTJ accidents seems like a policy designed to discourage incident reporting. Do you ever see MDs and pharmacists getting tested? I bet not. GRRRRRRR.
Update! I just got back into town and spoke with my registry. They tell me they will only pay for one drug screen and I must take it up the tail pipe to the tune of 50 bucks for a 10 panel urine test!!! Fine but the testing facility will be forwarding the results directly to me Baby. What a mess. I get fired for being outspoken about this hospital telling CNA's to sign letters of resignation as their jobs are being eliminated due to the ratio law and branded an upstart, find out that I have NOT been immune to german measles and that hospital sat on the info for over a year without offering me an MMR , my application to unemployment was denied because the HR told EDD that I had been discharged for breaking a "reasonable employer rule" !!! Enough already !!! I have never been fired before, nor am I a drug user. I am a responsible RN with a great reputation among my colleages and this is where I'm at career wise? Welcome to my nightmare. I just want to get back to work. I had a great interview with Kaiser a month and a half ago. I sent very professional follow up and thank you letters a well as voice mail to the recruiter but hear nothing, even though I see in the papers that they have positions available. What next? HELP!

Oh thanks, that's good to know...I am uninformed about how long this stuff stays in our system so I was feeling a bit paranoid....but I just couldn't stand the thought of needles in my epidural space without some Xanax...glad to hear it won't be a problem on a drug screen.
