Facility wants to take my RN title away

The long term facility I work at wants to take away my RN :nurse: title at the end of my name on my badge and put "Clinical Associate". Can they do this? I worked hard for my RN title and do not believe this can be fair. With this NEW title I feel like I work at Wal-Mart or something. I was also told that by doing this, next they will decrease our pay. I am VERY upset about this.:banghead: Any light you could shed on this matter would be greatly appreciated. :loveya:

You could buy those red and white "RN" patches from the Center for Nursing Advocacy and sew them to each top you have.

I was thinking along the same lines, after you address your concerns to your corporation and if they want to keep being sneaky-- buy an RN name tag fastener and clip it onto your nametag, or use a label-maker to print out "Registered Nurse" and stick it on that new nametag under your name and new title. I always see people with stickers and pins on their nametags. I would be fuming as well!

I like Siri's idea. Put Jane M. Smith, RN, Clinical Associate

and be done with it. If they won't allow this, I would not want to work there. RN is a your credential; you worked for it. And your patients/family members have the right to know this as well.

BTW I never tell anyone I was an ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER, unless I'm joking with them. I was a housekeeper, I cleaned and disinfected the facility, period. ENGINEER is another title that should be protected and not slapped on a lot of jobs the way it is.

I have to say, I agree.

Housekeepers work their tails off, but really! It is an entry level position. Anyone can do it. Not everyone can be an engineer.

If housekeepers are "engineers", then they should get paid like engineers...

HOOO HOOO... I laugh heartily!

Seriously, let the title fit the job and let the pay fit the title.

I had a friend who was an engineer and I'll be darned if he went through college and squandered his great brain power on housekeeping... or garbage collecting... or whatever.

Neither do nurses, to get back on topic.

It does no service to anyone in any level to downplay or upgrade titles.

Well I'm not ashamed to say I was a housekeeper, never have been. I worked hard and did a good job when I was in that position and was compensated well for that job. But it was, what it was. No more, no less.

Well I disagree, the service it does is for the company or organization that comes up with these alternative titles. It creates an impact and allows them to impress and deceive the people who read those titles.

You wouldn't want the CNAs feeling bad though...They work hard, you see.

Alternative titles aren't designed to make to make anyone feel better. In some situations it's purpose can be to cause dissention. Usually the main intention is to deceive and impress, causing dissention among employees usually is an added bonus. If we're all busy fighting each other, we not paying attention to what management is doing. Let's take the OP's situation and let's say that both nurses and CNAs are called CLINICAL ASSOCIATES. The facility has now falsely elevated via job title CNAs to the same level as a nurses. How could something like this not create huge problems. Both are different jobs, with different educational requirements, different job descriptions, and one requires a valid license. Both CNAs and nurses work hard, and in many places there is already dissention between both camps without alternative titles coming into play. Giving both the same title adds fuel to that fire.

Oh thanks, November, we forget the word COORDINATOR when it comes to tacking onto a job title.:D

If a facility wanted to take away RN from my title than I would quit. I've worked very hard for my license and my title. They can stick their "clinical associate" title where the sun don't shine.
