Do you think other hospitals out there are taxing so much of our nurses with the volunteer scheme? I don't know if you've encountered these but one hospital in my city has this post graduate practicum for nurses. It only lasts for 2 months plus one's ability to function as a nurse is very limited. I've read in the objectives of this so called programs that the aim of it is to enhance the gap of skills nurses have from the new BSN (the AHSE) program.
The worst part is that trainees are made to pay a certain heavy amount. Not to mention the miscellaneous fees that come with this training.
Any thoughts about this?
I myself i trained in one of the goverment hospital in Quezon City way back
1996 I was a new Board passer that time The Hospital offered 6 mos. tainee
with certificate w/o pay and if your absent for 1 day you'll pay it for 3 day duty
i remember when i assigned to outpatient, e trainees are made to fetch water
to be used in {i dont remember] that hospital is very old {qcgh}LoL
During that time 3x board exam is in effect . of 5000++ examinee
only 3,200++ passed, bring back 3x board exam plz:typing

The hospital where I am doing my training right now has that kind of system on how to deal with absences. In a case of an excused absent (sickness, emergency situations etc), the ratio if make up duty is 1:1. While for unexcused absents, it's 1 unexcused absent is equal to three make up duties. :S
The weird thing is that the nurse trainer was kind of angry when the ALL of the trainees did not attend the "Thanksgiving Mass". Is it really a requirement? I was like "duh"? Now she's going to give 3 days duty to those who didn't attend the mass...and in fact she doesn't any proof who were present there because attendance was not checked.
Going to Mass is not the same as working, and sorry, if you put up with behavior like this, then something is wrong.
This person needs to be reported, and how in the world can they worry about who was there and who was not when there is no attendance recorded?
Shame on them, that is for sure. No wonder they are doing the job that they are, they are not safe around patients.:angryfire

I was the secretary of the trainees and it was not endorsed to me that I should check the attendance. I was just totally surprised that the nurse trainer was angry because of the low attendance in the mass. Think about this...some of us were on night shifts. Others were in the afternoon shifts...so it was not very logical to let them attend the late morning mass.
Oh my! I bet if she's the one on your position, she would rather sleep!
We once had a unit meeting around 1400H. I'm from night shift. JUst a probee. BUt I think its logical if I'd rather sleep than wait 'till 1400H for the meeting. Then have my duty at night again. Oh! did I mentioned I live 30 km away from my work?
is appropriate for the hospitals to charge us php50 for the qualifying examinations?? i had my exams in 3 hospitals in manila and i paid php50.. i was aslo the one who brought the answer sheets(bond or yellow pad paper).. the test questionnaire is just 2 pages and photocopied.. which will just cost php2 if clear copy. where would the php50 go?? or shall we say php48, since the test paper is php2???? we were 30+ who took the exam.. 1 of the HR of the hospital instructed us not to call them to know the result. if we havent receive a call in 2 weeks, that means we fail..
i havent received a call from them but i am very confident that i passed their exam. the exam was easy especially the computation part..i am starting to think that they just schedule you for an exam to get money from us! even if its just php50, considering the number of examinees, that will costs alot.
2. One-take board exam policy is too harsh in my opinion. Many factors can affect passing or failing the board exams. There are students who graduate with honors and end up failing any licensure examination. It can be a mix of nerves, not feeling well during the actual test, anything can happen. 3. How about just shutting down schools that are poorly performing and only allowing graduates of fully-accredited schools to take the NLE. When I say accredited, I mean a panel of experts who will thoroughly review each school's faculty, facilities, clinical placements, and admission process - no exceptions or excuses, if the school does not make the cut, they don't operate!
Before there was an NMAT or National Medical Admissions Test for those who want to enter Med school after graduating from their pre-med courses because they want to curb out possible students. I think something on this line maybe done to curb out possible nursing students. This option has always been available because it has been done by others before.
In the former Philippine nursing law RA 7164, there was the upper 40% requirement for high school graduates who want to pursue a degree in nursing and the limit on how many times the NLE maybe attempted before a "refresher course in nursing".
Now, under the RA 9173, "it's all about the money". No more upper 40% requirement and no more limit on the number of retakes. The more examinees you have, the more money the Philippine government takes and the process doesn't end there. They(hospitals and other people or unscrupulous agencies) want to have a "slice of the cake" too and exploit nurses. Money, money, money...Hehehe...
high hopes

I think that...
1. students who have low or failing grades should be removed from the nursing course so that only the deserving ones will be able to graduate.
2.Schools that do not performed well during the board exams should be given a warning and if its performance does not improve, it should be closed down.
3.PRC should control the number of students taking the board exams and them passing so that quality is more emphasized rather than quantity of students passing.
4.Schools should also be more strict in accepting students and letting them graduate. Some schools give exams every semester to check on the quality of education and performance of their students, to remove undeserving students from the class.
5.Schools who lack facilities and the appropriate ratio of student to Clinical instructors should be shut down.
6.Government should be more strict with new schools offering nursing courses.
7.I also don't agree with the take one board exam because there are some deserving students who fail it the first time. Maybe 3 times is enough....
